Re:Ask HN: Which TV do you recommend for privacy? on Sunday November 01, 2026 @04:10PM (#50329933)
Sadly the Samsung TV I have was the best display for the price by a mile, so I've done what i can to balance usage and protection. Its connected to the wifi to allow for AirPlay natively. The tv has a fixed IP at the router to block all traffic in and out of the network, and as a visibility layer its DNS'd through a PiHole too.

Its unbelievably talkative over the network! In the 7 days just passed, its been 90% of the blocked requests by volume (there's no allowed domains from that IP).

I'm still not convinced it isn't sneaking out data somehow - piggybacking off a connection somewhere to the neighbors TV. Its HDMI runs through a stereo amplifier, so it can't piggy-back off the connected PC that runs it.

Maybe the PC (Mint) can run AirPlay somehow and I can disconnect it entirely from the internet?

I feel overly paranoid about this device relative to everything else in the house, I'm not sure how justified that is.

The image alt text is "An adult hugging a child in a stable beside a horse". I think they might be a placeholder, or a late change.
Strongly agree. I even wrote about this myself recently.

I offered a solution in either being a publisher (where companies show what they choose), or a distributor (where they show only what users created, in order).

A loud and clear distinction would assist in establishing what to expect, and how to reduce harm online.

Show HN: BixRouter – a non-linear AI chat interface for OpenRouter

https://router.bix.computer

Using chat interfaces often spawns many different thoughts, and while the AI and it's agents are okay at keeping track of it, I'm not always there. I needed to be able to see where my thoughts diverged, and retrace them back to the source. While mulling over a better interface, and trying to get memories into the OpenRouter CLI, I decided to roll it all into one.BixRouter is a tool for...

I am intrigued by the header, and it seems like this has some good points. However, I'm struggling to parse this content. There's a full image in between almost every sentence. In most cases, I don't find the image adds significantly to the point of the preceding or following sentence, so it just looks like filler for colour.

I could put this into an AI but then what's the point of the article in the first place?

Re:Pseudpocalypse on Thursday July 16, 2026 @05:51PM (#48940750)
I wondered something almost the opposite the other day. With consistent interaction with chat bots and AI output, their linguistic ticks are surely bleeding into every day speech ("smoking gun" and other turns of phrase). What if our linguistic output starts to conform?

> Do they, incorrectly, position their adverbial clauses? Underrated line.

An acquihire is when companies buy for the talent. What's it called when they buy for the virtues they'd like to extoll?

This is exciting! I wonder how they determine which cities are next in line? Probably regulation and governance?
Re:iNaturalist on Friday April 03, 2026 @01:44PM (#47629697)
This was a lifesaver around 2020 for me, documenting local critters and chatting about them. I've had immense satifaction in sharing my excitement for wildlife with others.

Great app, easy interface, friendly community. Thank you iNaturalist team!

Show HN: TrAIn of Thought – AI chat as I want it to be

https://bix.computer/graphMode

My conversations with LLMs branch in many directions. I want to be able to track those branches, revert to other threads, and make new branches at arbitrary points. So I built my own solution to it.It's essentially a tool for non-linear thinking. There's a lot of features I'd love to add, and I need some feedback before I take it anywhere else. So, I'm listening to whatever you're thinking is...

Re:PawSense: Catproof Your Computer on Tuesday January 13, 2026 @01:10AM (#46597771)
Oh, I really believed this was some strange keylogger spyware. Maybe it is? I really can't tell. Either this was the hook to get people to install it, or the front to make it seem like a real thing when people find it and google "why is pawsense installed on my computer".

> Even while you use your other software, PawSense constantly monitors keyboard activity. PawSense analyzes keypress timings and combinations to distinguish cat typing from human typing.

Re:Ireland’s Diarmuid Early wins world Microsoft Excel title on Saturday December 20, 2025 @03:30PM (#46339364)
It's interesting that the challenges are not business or accounting centred, as is the expectation when using Excel. If this is now general problem solving, are we watching language-specific competitive programming through the lens of a more broadly accessible platform like MS Excel?

I enjoy the idea, and love watching it grow.

Re:Japan: Apple Must Lift Browser Engine Ban by December on Wednesday August 06, 2025 @12:27PM (#44814199)
FF with uBO was the killer app that kept me on android. If Apple let me run that, I'd have bought into it years ago.

Have you considered messages.google.com? I think you need to use Google's messages app (not the Samsung messager or equivalent) but it does as you describe and supports RCS.

Re:Eleven Music Is Here on Tuesday August 05, 2025 @01:09PM (#44800862)
If you consider that Entertainment gives the viewer what they want, and art intends to challenge, none of what's created here is "art". It doesn't push boundaries, create new genres, or satisfy an uncomfortable curiosity.

The tech here is fantastic. I love that such things are possible now and they're an exciting frontier in creation.

It's very dystopian to feel that the robots are making generic human-music with indescribably lifeless properties. I'm not an artist, so I don't feel personally attacked. Much like image gen, this seems to be aimed at replacing the bare-minimum artist (visual or auditory) with a "fill in the blanks" entertainment piece.

Is there something you'd like those observers to hear?
Re:Show HN: If YouTube had actual channels on Thursday August 15, 2024 @05:57PM (#41260842)
I did this in Plex using DizqueTV. It was a blast to set up, schedule, and insert a selection of toy ads from the era to make it feel real.

Of course, I only watched it once or twice before I realised I am not capable of sitting through 6 hours of cartoons any more. The sugary cereal made me feel sick, too.

Strongly recommend.

I agree. There are many more important issues that could be solved with this person's expertise and willingness to apply themselves. Unfortunately, you can only lead a horse to water.

The vastness of areas which could be studied, advanced, or challenged lends itself well to human curiosity. I feel it would be unwise and unreasonable to stop people from exploring their area of interest.

Consider all the academic papers written with 0 citations. Did they waste their time? Should they have picked from a centralised pool of "most important" issues? The breadth-first search approach benefits the scientific community long term, I'd imagine.

Do you work tirelessly to prevent climate change as your day job? If not, why?

Re:Friendship and Social Fitness on Sunday July 21, 2024 @03:38PM (#41027545)
Delightful read. I second the authors sentiments about awkward reconnections during COVID Lockdowns that turned into rekindled friendships.

I wonder what the interaction between having friends and having a close family is. Does friendship mean more (or less) if your family bonds are stronger?

Better schedule in some time to meet a friend this week - maybe in place of going to the gym!
