Re:GitHub Copilot is moving to usage-based billing on Monday April 27, 2026 @12:21PM (#47923610)
End of an era for predictable costs as a small business. We will refer to these times as ‘the good old days’.
How capable are these models at tool calling?
Re:Ask HN: What are you working on? (March 2025) on Monday March 31, 2025 @03:13AM (#43532087)
I’m working on yet another markdown, FOSS, self hostable personal note taking web app.

Check it out at https://panino.sh

Re:The Software Engineering Identity Crisis on Sunday March 23, 2025 @03:31PM (#43455227)
This is an excellent article.

We’re all just swimming as the AI wave comes crashing on every developer out there - we can keep swimming, dive or surf. Picking a strategy is necessary but it would probably be good to be able to do all of the above.

Re:Managing Difficult Software Engineers on Thursday August 17, 2023 @07:27AM (#37159992)
In case you missed it in the article, the author seems to address this in the section titled 'Effectively Managing the Norm'.
Re:A list of recent hostile moves by Google's Chrome team on Thursday August 03, 2023 @04:21AM (#36982888)
From my experience hardware acceleration has been quite lacking on Ubuntu (especially noticeable when watching YouTube).
Can you cite those statements?
Your friends did whatever was needed to pass the interview. You did not.

How is it surprising that they're the ones getting raises? Clearly they're willing to risk more than you are for the reward.

Only getting caught cheating guarantees loss.

Playing fair does not guarantee winning.

Re:Vercel Postgres on Monday May 01, 2023 @05:01PM (#35779082)
Seems quite expensive for anything but hobby scale projects... Or am I missing something?
Am I alone in feeling... 'yikes'?
Re:PostgREST – Serve a RESTful API from Any Postgres Database on Thursday December 29, 2022 @10:10AM (#34173367)
Does anyone have experience integrating 3rd party auth systems (ex Keycloak) with Postgrest? How did that experience go?
Re:Ask HN: Host a website from a living room in 2022? on Tuesday December 20, 2022 @09:56AM (#34066704)
Yes absolutely a Pi is likely plenty assuming it's fairly light load. That said, if you prefer x86 you may have better mileage using an older thinclient or perhaps even something like the ODroid H3 (or frankly any old laptop).

Just be sure to have a decent backup system in place as consumer grade equipment like the above may fail rather abruptly with little route to recovery.

Edit: you may want to check out Jupiter Broadcasting's Self-Hosted podcast. The show is very much geared towards DIY enthusiasts/small businesses.

I wonder what kind of growth Mastodon saw over the last 24hrs.
Re:An X11 apologist tries Wayland on Monday September 19, 2022 @02:13AM (#32894840)
On X when in a Zoom call, if I drag any window around the whole DE starts tearing wildly to the point of it being very distracting. On Wayland, it's smooth as butter (or Windows or MacOS for that matter).

This is just one very easy to replicate example. There are a bunch of other seemingly simple tasks that lead to some rather hideous tearing in X.

Re:Ask HN: Is there any beautiful Markdown editor? on Sunday September 11, 2022 @05:04AM (#32798041)
StackEdit has fully taken over all of my Markdown note writing. It's a fabulous free little PWA that keeps things simple and gets the job done.
Re:Private, organization-owned repository FAQ on Thursday August 04, 2022 @05:51AM (#32341018)
Couldn't have said it better myself. Within an hour of reading the mail we began moving our infrastructure to Cloudflare Pages.

Crying shame because I would have been willing to pay Netlify 20-30e per month. But going from 0 to 120e+ per month is just too steep to justify given the alternatives available.

Re:Eating at your desk is banned in France on Sunday June 12, 2022 @03:09AM (#31712269)
Getting to that is the aspiration, don't get me wrong. At present however I'm in year 3 of bootstrapping a consulting/product startup - so every quarter is still somewhat existential.

The sooner we're reliably profitable, the sooner I can escape the hamster wheel.

It's a reasonable question, but frequently it's quite a complex answer. Given you are likely just one of many applicants I think it may just accelerate most employers turning you down.

If seeing the codebase is an important part of your decision (ie not just knowing what stack/libraries are in use) you may wish to apply for an open source oriented company.

Re:Eating at your desk is banned in France on Saturday June 11, 2022 @11:18AM (#31705105)
As someone who regularly works 10-12 hours a day, shifting the end of the work day a further 1.5hrs sounds like a special kind of hell.

I'll be sticking to my hasty desk-lunch thank you very much.

Promising once it has a volume of users. At first though, I imagine it would attract relatively new podcasts that don't yet have established communities.

That said, until it reaches some critical mass which adds value to creators in terms of discovery and community, asking small time creators to fork out 360USD per year is quite a big ask.

Re:Ask HN: Who operates at scale without containers? on Tuesday March 22, 2022 @01:51PM (#30769220)
How so? Doesn't CentOS share a lot of the same issues as Ubuntu? Legitimate question.
I have a little progressive Web app I'm currently rewriting in Vue 3. Was hoping to toss it in electron for cross platform desktop use. Now I think I'll give this a go first. Great work!
Re:Mocking Bird – Realtime Voice Clone for Chinese on Tuesday December 28, 2021 @03:26AM (#29711647)
I'm very interested in this space. Forgive my ignorance, but what makes this fit for Chinese voices, while unfit for English voices?
For a complete Bluetooth layman like myself, this was a fascinating read.

Alongside god and the manufacturer, I now know to curse the standards body too whenever trying to connect these damn headphones!

Re:Firefox's JIT is getting significantly faster on Saturday September 26, 2020 @04:44AM (#24597336)
Am I the only one who thinks an /average/ wage of 280k is pretty absurd?

The PS2 emulation scene is what ended up driving me to IT and eventually software development back when they hosted their forums on NGEmu. Tons of respect to all the contributors for keeping the endeavor alive - incredible what they've managed to accomplish.

Unrelated, has anyone ever tried getting PCSX2 to run on ARM chips?
