I am not sure you comprehend the fame and reach of the actors mentioned. They don’t need connections, they are super famous in their own right.

Also note, Amitabh is in his late seventies. I doubt he is interested in connections at his age.

Re:Ask HN: You favorite (not so popular) quote? on Sunday July 12, 2020 @07:25AM (#23810562)
I am so clever that sometimes I don't understand a single word of what I am saying.

How do you find pop os compared to Ubuntu?

Re:Ask HN: Most life changing things that you bought? on Tuesday June 30, 2020 @06:17AM (#23688566)
Which model do you have?
Re:Ask HN: Most life changing things that you bought? on Tuesday June 30, 2020 @06:13AM (#23688536)
What laptop do you have?
Removing ports. Zero upgrades possible - not even hard disk, memory.

In Apple’s case - repairing is near impossible for an average user. Even the fucking screws are non standard. They charge an arm and a leg for repairs.

Thank you for responding. Is there any particular model that is better off than others, used? My usecase is programming - I don’t game, but I edit videos
Where do you buy? eBay? Is there some other reputable place to buy used ones for a first time buyer?
Re:Facebook acquires Mapillary on Friday June 19, 2020 @06:23AM (#23572995)
For how long?
1 hour per day? Wow, that is insane!! In a good way, of course.

How long did it take to reach an hour?

What kind of breakthroughs? How long do the benefits last after the silent period?

Thank you for taking the time to answer

Anyone gone so long on silent retreats? Can you talk about the experience?
The best I’ve used so far. quite pricey, but worth it
What is your preferred distro?
I had the same experience. Windows became noticeably faster without antivirus. Also other problems like not downloading large files disappeared too.

Re:Ask HN: Can't focus when writing code in dark mode on Saturday May 30, 2020 @02:13PM (#23363266)
I hate dark mode, I thought I was weird. Glad to know there are others who prefer light mode!

Can you suggest some books to learn interesting math topics for someone with just high school understanding of math?
Re:The Day AppGet Died on Thursday May 28, 2020 @10:11AM (#23337433)
Microsoft is a tech company. Getting bad PR among techies is pretty bad for them. Maybe not as bad as bad PR with general public, still bad...
Is the data scraped? What is the tech stack?
Re:The Day AppGet Died on Wednesday May 27, 2020 @11:12PM (#23332989)
Well, they’re getting bad PR now for screwing the author over ...
Re:Ask HN: Looking for side project ideas on Sunday May 24, 2020 @07:23AM (#23290785)
What tasks do you do manually in your life/job that is boring? Automate it wherever possible.

Help users of nonprofits understand them better - watsi, Kiva etc share data that can be visualized in a variety of ways.

Teach (blog, video etc) - this is especially effective in topics you already know, but have gaps. Teaching forces you to clear those gaps.

Do exercises from project Euler, Rosetta etc

This seems more in certain cultures than others - American and Japanese from my anecdotal experience. I worked with Europeans (French especially), they don’t seem to wear long hours as a badge of honor.

My American boss regularly feels proud that he puts in 12-14 hour days. In my opinion, that amount of hours makes sense if I am working on my own business or something that truly benefits humanity (like a vaccine for COVID-19 for example). It is hard to do good work more than 6-7 hours per day anyway and much harder to sustain it for long periods of time

A bit off topic - is it worth learning blockchain tech? Is it a viable career? If yes, where should be start - btc, eth..? Or something else?
So what if they don’t know how to hire programmers? All they have to do is hire someone who has had engineering leadership role/experience and let them hire programmers, isn’t it?

Isn’t it easier to verify someone’s leadership credentials than COBOL skills?

Re:Bird lays off hundreds via Zoom call on Friday March 27, 2020 @09:14PM (#22708375)
Maybe. But there are way too many companies and leaders like this. They expect two week notice when an employee leaves, but have no problem firing people at 5 pm on Friday via email/text whatever.
Re:Ask HN: How to Eradicate Bedbugs? on Saturday March 14, 2020 @08:33AM (#22574792)
If you’re renting, just move out and discard as much clothing as possible. I had this issue in an apartment I was renting - I tried everything that I could, as a tenant. Nothing worked. I gave up and moved out, in desperation.

Bedbugs are horrible. They also stink bad.

Re:Lambda School threatens ex-employee for coming forward on Monday March 09, 2020 @05:39PM (#22530116)
I didn’t know about the working conditions. Now I know, because they are threatening her and because of this article. Next time I hear about them, I am going to remember this article.

Sometimes it is best to keep quiet, is it not?

Yes, I do understand she got paid for her silence.
