News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

tucaz

I did EXACTLY that last night. Was doing by hand for about an hour and got to a point where I didn’t feel competent anymore and asked Claude to take from where I was.

5 minutes later I had almost 3 hours of important footage recovered.

What changed after this discovery? What was better or worse and how better or worse?

Because I have a machine running dozens of apps on Docker and have a solid and stable workflow I want to take advantage of to manage my apps.
Re:Nvidia NemoClaw on Wednesday March 18, 2026 @12:54PM (#47428169)
OpenClaw is so bad with Docker. I spent hours on it and hit road block after road block trying to get the most basic things working.

The last one was inability to install dependencies on the docker container to enable plugins. The existing scripts and instructions don’t work (at least I couldn’t get them to work. Maybe a me problem).

So I gave up and moved on. What was supposed to be a helpful assistant became a nightmare.

Well said. Second all of this.
Right now everyone is trying to figure out what LLMs mean for individual productivity. We still pretend we are doing most of the stuff when it comes to team dynamics and behave as individuals.

I’m curious to see what comes next and how team dynamics and collaborative work will change once we are past that phase.

In my vision people will answer questions that other humans or LLMs have based on tons of documents and accumulated context that is shared and things will happen.

What is missing yet is how to share all that context. I don’t think any one current solution will be the winner because they are all too brittle and crumbly. It’s going to be something new and everyone from the company will have to use it to be effective.

There’s probably loads of opportunity here.

I love Claude Code but that can be expensive. If you are on a budget you can do K2.5 with OpenCode.
Do what you are doing but dump the contents of tracing into an LLM agent (cowork, code, opencode, etc) and ask for it to take a first pass. It’ll at least narrow it down for you. Use a smart model and it should be helpful.
If you want help you want help so I’m not going to judge that, but claiming you don’t have access to a Windows machine in 2026? How about virtualization and computers in the cloud?

Breaking down into specific issues would also help you find help as smaller and more specific asks are easier to respond to than the opposite.

Re:Ask HN: Why isn't there competition to LinkedIn yet? on Tuesday December 30, 2025 @01:32PM (#46436371)
We are about to see what happens when this is reality. 2025 law from Utah goes effective in July 2026 if I’m not mistaken and requires data portability between platforms.

https://le.utah.gov/~2025/bills/static/HB0418.html

I’m curious to see impact, adoption, side effects, etc.

Re:Ask HN: How do early-stage teams scale engineering quickly? on Thursday November 20, 2025 @02:57PM (#45996906)
All of the above and none at the same time.

Companies will run multiple things in parallel. Some will work. Some won’t.

Even the stuff that works, might work for a little time instead of the long run.

A lot will go to waste. A lot gets duplicated. A lot will be redone in the future.

My suggestion is: go as slow as you can but not slower. Do as little as possible but not less.

This has been the case for years
You have to learn by doing. Here’s a good tutorial for Fusion 360 -> https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLISvF10lebIzMQjtPhKVlCwzs...

And a classic for Blender from Blender Guru -> https://youtu.be/4haAdmHqGOw?si=7Sk-dxbyPFi5PL8u

I’m no expert but the little I know was trying to solve one problem after the other.

Re:Image to 3D on Monday May 12, 2025 @02:28PM (#43966108)
You mentioned “Text to 3D” but that app says it’s not available yet.
In Brazil it was, but that was years ago. I can’t speak for the current situation, but given the stakes, I would try if I could afford it.

Sorry I can’t be more helpful.

Not sure if that’s how it still works but you can submit the DS-160 and then try everyday to see if there are open slots for earlier dates due to people cancelling or them opening more slots.

In Brazil there used to be companies who did F5 on the browser all they for their clients and charged for it.

Re:Ask HN: How does one break into a new industry? on Thursday March 20, 2025 @08:45PM (#43430728)
Work on a tangentially related field until they get enough experience to be accepted in the new industry?

I worked in the furniture industry building software and we had a great interior designer who ended up working as a SME (business analyst) in our projects for 3 or 4 years.

I helped her prepare her resume and practice for interviews and she got a job as an actual BA making the salary of a mid level/senior BA and has been killing ever since.

I think it does. He’s saying it’s not really a big deal as they will find a way to keep the people working in the product and serving other markets or people who decide to leave will get decent severance packages.

Thanks for the domain name suggestion.

TheCaringCompany.com was taken but a good enough variant wasn’t and I got it.

Thank you!

Not sure if I'm looking at the wrong place but in the Careers page[1] there are only two openings for Strategist and Director of Experience Design.

Re:Ask HN: Should I put my startup on my resume? on Tuesday September 10, 2024 @09:34AM (#41500612)
There are two sides for you to consider.

On the positive side, it gives the hiring manager, if they care for that, a signal that you can build and ship stuff. You have tried building your own company and has more experience around the challenges that most devs do not have. I love to interview people who built stuff.

On the negative side, it also signals that you might not be as committed to the new company since you are pursuing something on the side, or has demonstrated that you want to pursue something other than the engagement you are applying for. I’m not saying that you can’t do both things at once, or that X is better than Z. Just stating how it might come across and can negatively affect your job search.

As long as you consider these two sides and come up with a “solution” to this, you are in the path to make an informed decision and can “defend” your position.

Good luck!

Senior Backend Engineer (NodeJS) - https://andela.wd1.myworkdayjobs.com/en-US/External/job/LATA...

I don’t want to be exclusively negative but I have to say that it seems like you both have no idea how to work together.

Since saying the above, while obvious, is not helpful so I would suggest that you both sit together for however long it takes and figure out a framework you both can agree and stick to to solve differences as well as who is the owner of each individual process that will be required.

If you can’t make that work now, while there’s really nothing going on, can you imagine when (if) something is really on the line?

Take that chance and also figure out what is the exit criteria. What do you do when one of you want to get out of the venture?

Never enter into any sort of agreement without knowing how do you get out. It’s much easier to figure those things out now than when you are at a point of wanting to get out.

I’d agree with the parent that your biggest challenge is going to be able to deal with a boss.

If you can get through that and make it clear in the process you should be more than fine.

If getting interviews is hard having a title of CTO or founder on your resume you change it to Director or Staff just to get into the process and explain it on the interview.

How do you make sure that a plumber or a construction worker or even a surgeon is going to do the right thing?

It usually helps if you look at the problem from a different perspective.

I came to this post thinking I was going to find a bad question, but it's actually the opposite. Very good question as our other friend pointed out in the comments. I think you are already on the right track just by asking it.

I don't know about any books on this subject, and it was something I could have benefited from before for sure, instead of having to learn myself how to "succeed" in an environment like the one OP described.

There's a lot to be written about the subject, in multiple levels, but at the highest level, and in the most summarized way, what you have to do to succeed is simply to bring solutions to people and not problems.

The catch, in my experience and opinion, is that the large majority of people, by far, confuse the two things.

Coming up with an idea for a project that will solve a problem is not a solution. It is actually a problem from your supervisor/company perspective.

"Why is it a problem?", you ask.

The reason is simple, now this project is another item for your supervisor to add to their backlog because they will have to do all the work: write about it, explain and sell it to stakeholders and supporters, assemble a team, plan the project, manage execution, and all the other stuff.

"How do you transform this into a solution?"

You take on all those things. You should do all the work required to put a real plan together. Once that's done, then you bring it to your supervisor and you'll find that it is much easier to get support like that. The challenge is coming up with a plan that includes everything your supervisor/company cares about.

I can assure you that if you get this right, you'll find yourself contributing to the bigger picture much more often. Everyone says they want to contribute, but when it comes time to do the actual work, very little people want to do it, because it's really hard.

Re:How to get out of career limbo? on Monday March 11, 2024 @02:59PM (#39672052)
Without knowing more about you it seems like you are having issues communicating your experience and how valuable that is.

We just closed two positions on my team with that exact requirement (BE + Infra) and it was not super easy as most people with that experience are looking for "higher" positions than individual contributors. A lot of places need good IC's who can execute so I doubt the issue is that you have too much experience.

I would try to re-frame your experience as being one who can guide, mentor and help elevate the whole team you are part of.

To me it seems like you solved the first problem when building a company which is building something that at least some people are willing to pay for. The next problem you have to solve now is figuring out if there are more people who want it and how you get to those people.

Your idea is not dead. It passed the first step. Now you move to the next one.

They definitely should if that’s what you need to feel comfortable with your choice of working with them. If they can’t support you in a way you trust you should look for alternatives (like you are).
