Re:Node.js CVEs Released on Thursday October 22, 2026 @03:44AM (#50192415)
So many CVEs and other vulnerabilities, that this post gets zero traction on HN?
Not OC, but don’t be daft.

How modern Israel came to be upon “God promised land”?

That’s the main reason and I do not believe in any possibility of any peace in the region, whatever bullshit politicians would say.

Tell me why anyone in the region shouldn’t be pissed of at Israel (and to their piggy banks in the West)?

Re:NYC's "Click to Cancel" rule is now in effect on Monday October 12, 2026 @01:27AM (#50051699)
Where I am from this sort of dark pattern is used by most service companies at this point. There’s some regulation, though too little.

Most gyms, ISPs, mobile carriers, any sort of services with continuous subscription have this scheme:

- they sell you subscription with some ridiculous (and perpetual) discount (often with “first three months - it’s free”);

- there’s minimum commitment clauses/fines (so you won’t leave too early);

- there’s clause to “pay up all given discounts on canceling the contract”;

- they “balance” two rules above in such a way that it is never “good time” to leave.

Re:$2599 Microsoft Surface Laptop Ultra on Thursday October 08, 2026 @06:08AM (#50003937)
AFAIK, currently MBP with M5 Pro starts with 24GB and 1TB SSD at $2499.

Wonder if this seals the fate that M6 Pros will be at absolute minimum $100 more expensive?

Re:Dear Software Makers on Thursday October 01, 2026 @08:18AM (#49920670)
I am probably looking waaaay too much into this, but I was told 5+ years ago that streaming platforms will develop AI to plugin "natural" product placement for each user.

For example, ad algorithm will draw product placement with specific products that it thinks you're the target. Protagonist will drink pepsi/coke/juice, will use linux/mac, will drive MB/BMW/Ford - depending on what ad algorithm thinks you'd like to buy.

Somehow I feel like this "A/B testing" feature is actually a cornerstone by YouTube for AI driven media future, for exactly this (dystopian) reason.

Re:The last time my family was replaced by technology on Thursday October 01, 2026 @02:41AM (#49918437)
Early cars were called horseless carriages for a reason.

Car bodies were carriages for few first decades of car history. So if you can fix and maintain horse carriage - you can maintain car carriage.

Engines were simple too and designed to be maintained in a field environment with few tools. So it’s reasonable that this skill was learned, especially by mechanically inclined people.

Re:OpenAI Model Misalignment Report on Thursday September 17, 2026 @09:40AM (#49740618)
IMO it wasn’t mistake. They use it deliberately to avoid blame.

“Mas Namtla didn’t murder a person - his AI drone was just misaligned”

Maybe it’s just my models: Timp GTX and Timp 5 that aren’t reliable.

Got my hands on Olympus - will see if it’s better.

Yup, my bets are on this. It’s not only github that gets ~order of magnitude more PRs and commits, but probably app stores too.

Wonder how it will change app stores for the future.

Re:Claude Is a Contrarian on Monday September 14, 2026 @01:09PM (#49700380)
Today, I asked Opus what it’s gibberish actually means. It started with (topic about signing implementation):

> This is your coat token, to my coat hanger in the opera.

On one hand - maybe yes??! On the other who the hell speaks like that and it’s so specific…

I’d expect Alice and Bob with locks or house keys. Is this infamous old book scanning (and destroying) affecting latest models?

> Further, wikipedia is not a credible source link in-case you didn't know.

@grok what is a credible source?

/s of course

This.

Neither Hoka, Asics, New Balance, et al. make truly wide toe box shoes.

Better than nothing - sure. Though after wearing Altras, feet health is much better and you can feel how all other shoes feel tight, even my widest Hokas are tight in comparison.

My biggest complaints though with Altras:

- They offer only zero drop (or near zero drop) shoes;

- Their QC to price ratio is atrocious (stitches failing, heel fabric gone to shreds 2-3 times faster than other brands, sole is so soft that it goes to shreds or wears out 2 times faster than others);

Problem for me is that I wouldn't even consider buying them if they wouldn't be the only shoe brand that I can access that has truly wide toe box and is not "barefoot shoe".

Re:What do Visa and Mastercard do? An intro to card networks on Friday September 11, 2026 @01:55AM (#49654053)
In Sweden I saw Swish app QR codes everywhere. In every store, cafe, museums and even for donations (e.g. volunteers maintaining trails, independent museums, etc).

I had no issue paying with a card everywhere, but it was interesting to see those QR codes everywhere.

Though after spending 15min trying to set it up - I eventually made a conclusion that it’s impossible for non Swede (or someone without Swedish bank account and/or mobile phone number). Could be wrong, but did not delve more.

Had to skip couple donations - as they only accepted Swish app.

Re:iPhone Duo on Thursday September 10, 2026 @01:05AM (#49638650)
I saw ~20 year old presentation where Craig Federighi presented (for first time??) - dude was shaking like leaf and could hardly do the demo.

It turned out fine and now he’s one of more charming presenters.

Re:Tiny $70 Xteink X3 e-reader puts Silicon Valley to shame on Monday September 07, 2026 @09:54AM (#49598495)
Ok, though still obscure.

I don’t want to looking where to order it when it’s lost or broken.

Re:Tiny $70 Xteink X3 e-reader puts Silicon Valley to shame on Monday September 07, 2026 @08:57AM (#49597877)
It's so sad that X4 Pro does not have USB-C.

They have added backlight, but still left charging/connecting to proprietary magnetic adapter.

Re:The August 17 outage, and the work ahead on Thursday August 20, 2026 @05:15PM (#49380376)
Eh, I would be more empathic in this situation[0].

Github isn’t small startup, where other 10x threshold is as cheap as buy bigger box in your IaaS.

When you are already biggest player in the ecosystem and you suddenly get 10x persisted traffic, with at least 30x+ forecast “soon” - I am not surprised they have issues.

[0] even at current MS owned github

I mostly browse https://news.ycombinator.com/active for this reason.
Not me, just preserving the title as much as possible.
With social media you can spend small amounts of money , create media and target people half across the globe from you.

ruzzian troll farm employee cannot call into fox news and say “create 100 John Does impersonating MAGA texans (or whatever), present them as real and I will pay you 5$ for that”. Such troll can automate all this and present media somewhat realistically on FB.

I just want to add, that they (FB and other big social media) probably understood what propaganda power they wield after 2016 facebook and cambridge analytica scandal.

Personally - I think that this was the moment when silicon valley billionaires without shadow of a doubt understood that they have power what used to be reserved only for state actors. Bonus - for using that power they get fined penny on the dollar at most or just slap on the wrist.

Update: now situation is even worse - states actively buy propaganda with social media companies, making those companies even more rich and influential.
