Re:What is the business model for DuckDuckGo? (2017) on Thursday May 28, 2020 @09:02PM (#23345139)
Hah, was thinking the same. There really is an opportunity to build a site out of this need. Not revolutionary, but a niche one can own
I love this! Semi-related, I was just fiddling with a Firefox extension this morning to flip Python 2 documentation results with those of Python 3 (usually also in the results, but lower on the page)
Re:Ask HN: Looking for side project ideas on Sunday May 24, 2020 @08:31AM (#23291044)
Build something that you wish you had, not what you think people need.
Re:New species of fungus identified via Twitter on Saturday May 16, 2020 @06:55AM (#23202381)

It only took me until 35 to realize these official, scientific-sounding names are part useful, part researchers trolling us.

Re:Ask HN: What is your blog and why should I read it? on Tuesday April 07, 2020 @08:41AM (#22802619)
https://bartekci.substack.com

I began this during the covid-19 pandemic, mainly as a means of keeping myself sane.

It's targeted towards engineering managers, currently writing out my "Foundational" stuff -- things I live by as an engineering manager, the blend of people / process, and how to connect those in humane ways, while also taking care of yourself

As you can tell, I don't have my pitch down yet ;) It's still early days (only three articles, with intention to get one out every ~9 days), but it's been nice to get thoughts on paper

Re:Ask HN: What are you learning? on Sunday April 05, 2020 @04:48PM (#22788589)
I'm learning how to build 3d environments using three.js, specifically react-three-fiber

Fun way to jump back into React while also learning new concepts!

Re:Palm Phone for Minimalists on Saturday April 04, 2020 @10:51PM (#22783375)
Not saying I don't like it. :)
Re:Palm Phone for Minimalists on Saturday April 04, 2020 @10:33PM (#22783283)
Yup, I dig this and I hope we see more of this as we enter another phase of mobile devices.

My iPhone 11, although a great phone, is unnecessary for me. I love its camera (for photos/FaceTime), everything else is superfluous. I am also terrified with dropping it.

Re:Ask HN: Who is hiring? (March 2020) on Monday March 02, 2020 @07:38PM (#22470691)
G Adventures | Engineering Manager | Boston, MA | Full-time | On-site, remote friendly (Relocation possible)

G Adventures has been a world leader and innovator in sustainable adventure travel since 1990. We're a strong believer that tourism can be used to distribute wealth, and that's represented in how we operate as a company.

We're looking for an engineering manager to help grow our Product Systems team. This team focuses on building the systems which help our product teams build out the Itineraries, components, budgets, and costs associated with G Adventures tours. You'll drive a full stack team working in React and Python/Django.

We recently on-boarded two additional companies onto our systems as well, expanding our customer base (a challenge, but exciting!).

See more at https://www.keyvalues.com/g-adventures. If you're interested, email me directly (Director, Operational Systems) at [email protected]

Thanks for sharing this!

Love the language here. Even see this as a meaningful way to explain concepts to children.
Re:CSS Containment Specification on Sunday February 16, 2020 @08:11AM (#22341395)
This feels odd to live as part of the CSS spec, given its focus on style. Now we're mixing in performance specification with styling

I guess that's already been done anyways. Anyone care to help me understand why this lives here?

Re:Ask HN: What job can a “jack of all trades” look for? on Saturday February 15, 2020 @04:56PM (#22338277)
If you are in a role where you could be involved in the decision making of the product(s) you work on, getting involved in that [initially informally] is definitely the best way.

Be knowledgeable about metrics/kpis (and help create them if they don't exist), help your teammates grow through coaching, and work your way to be involved in those product discussions.

If you're not in such a position, try looking for a new job. So many companies need product managers and if you come clear on your ambitions, it seems to be easy to get past that initial wall.

This is .. absurd. I find it hard to believe.

We live in an urban centre (Somerville, near Boston) and go outside not just every weekend, but almost daily with our three year old.

In the evenings we do neighbourhood walks. In the winter it's even more fun with a flashlight

On weekends we're out of the house by 10am on average. We are minutes away from reservation areas and so much green space

It's stupidly easy to be surrounded by trees and nature, even in the city. We don't even need a car to do it (but we do use one at times!)

Re:The Cruise Origin on Tuesday January 21, 2020 @09:17PM (#22113930)
Why can't we just invest in buses? This will become the luxury/premium version of "public transit"
Re:Playdate – December 2019 Update on Friday January 10, 2020 @08:09PM (#22017290)
Love it. Not in it to change the world or gain enormous profit, rather in it to make cool shit and have fun. A breath of fresh air.
Re:Things that I think will be important in the next decade on Thursday January 09, 2020 @07:44PM (#22007467)
Nope. Not enough implementations right now outside of quirky demos or gaming. Of course see initial adoption by excited crowd but not mass market.
Re:Ask HN: What Technologies to Learn in 2020? on Sunday January 05, 2020 @10:15AM (#21961556)
Learning what's new and shiny is great, but try to spend time this year building something, seeing it live in the wild, fixing and debugging it, nurturing it. Build on your critical thinking.

Perhaps do that with a new technology :)

Re:Why Canada's cannabis bubble burst on Sunday December 29, 2019 @08:21AM (#21905744)
The lack of edibles for the initial launch is a big blocker for casual adoption IMO.

As per the visuals, cannabis use has not grown dramatically since legalization. Oils and raw bud are simply not as accessible as a bar of chocolate.

I imagine that won't cause a significant bump either, but at the least, it opens up the market to the casual user -- which simply has not happened yet in Canada.

Re:Ask HN: 2020 goals and resolutions? on Thursday December 26, 2019 @08:59PM (#21888510)
Continue reducing my anxiety to improve physical and mental health.

In 2019, I peaked. I did an international move with my family (wife, 3yr old) while working on a major project which was ultimately setting us all up to fail

Since that move, I've begun running 5km 2-3 times a week, and improving how I focus my time. I am a workaholic, but now redirecting that time to work on (or for) myself, rather than for the company I work for (I love my job, but I was spending an inordinate amount of time for it)

Next steps are to continue reducing my caffeine intake. I don't know if it'll help but caffeine can increase anxiety. I'm working on going down from two double-shot espressos and a tea in the evening to one cup a day. I'm much better off here than others but again -- it's about reducing that anxiety!

A work in progress, never overnight :)

The linked Fast Company article has additional tidbits, highlighting the amount of developers, for example.

Re:Shopping Sucks Now on Friday December 13, 2019 @04:46PM (#21785850)
I know where this article is trying to go, but as someone who rarely shops .. damn is it nice.

I went to Uniqlo in Faneuil Hall here in Boston yesterday. Simply walking into the store is an _experience_. It's in a historic district, surrounded by quick bites and other fun knick knacks, and the store itself is beautiful laid out.

This is where the physical store absolutely destroys the abysmal online experience. Curation and the human experience.

Re:A Distributed Meeting Primer on Wednesday December 04, 2019 @09:15PM (#21709366)
This is something we've been practicing as we go distributed and I couldn't agree more. Placing everyone on equal planes in these situations is incredibly important in giving each individual the ability to communicate.
Re:Django 3 on Monday December 02, 2019 @08:42AM (#21682199)
No specific gotchas with type hinting, but be aware that Django has not implemented any notion of type hints. So, you lack quite the benefit of type hinting
