This is great feedback. The magic about eight times increase in credit card capture is pretty huge. In my case, the application is very simple, and I think people need to use it before deciding to pay.

So I'm really thinking about going to a graduated payment/engagement solution. Doing up cells in the application might be the way to go for something with such a low price. In my case, I'm looking at charging $24 per year.

Ask HN: To Ask for CC on Signup or Not?

The prevailing idea about converting customers on freemium websites is to require a credit card signup right off the bat, at signup time, to validate that users are indeed willing to pay for your product, and to increase conversions. This method was used by Basecamp for a long time, requiring credit card on signup, but in the new version of Basecamp, a credit card is no longer required.In...

I looked carefully at MailChimp but I didnt see anything about being able to set up "Drip Campaigns" where people will get messaged using a predefined set of emails at given intervals after an event (such as a signup on a website). That's the secret sauce that I'm looking for - being able to add people to predefined workflows using an API and ideally push them down different paths, such as "Purchased" or "Didnt purchase after 60 days", so I can market to them more specifically and in an automatic way. This is what I meant by "Drip Campaign"

Ask HN: What do you use for email drip campaigns? (InfusionSoft, etc?)

I'm launching a new startup and I want to use good outbound email marketing in the form of a "drip campaign", where users are sent emails at 1 day, 7 days, 15 days, 30 days, 60 days after signup, and recieve different emails if they've signed up for the product or not.I've worked with InfusionSoft but its $199/mo at the cheapest, and seen some alternatives like AllClients and Nanacast. They...

Show HN: Slicer for OS X

Here's my new Window Management app for OS X (think SizeUp, MercuryMover, Shift-It, etc). Mine uses a "recursive" style of interface that always starts a window Full Screen and then cuts in it half (or thirds) with each keypress. Works with dual monitor rigs and is fun to use. Please kick the tires:http://allsystemsgrow.com/slicer/Slicer.zipDemo...

Ask HN: What do you use for time tracking

As a freelancer, its important that I accurately track and bill my time. I think a lot of us end up guessing about time on projects and tend to under-bill.What do you use for time tracking?(I am writing an app that 'solves' time tracking in a new way and am trying to determine which services I should target for integration. Currently supporting Harvest, what else is important?)Please post the...

I am so concerned about all the other work that has to be done that I tend to fall on the other side of the spectrum; get the design to an 'acceptable' place and move on.

My attitude is something along the lines of 'If you're not freaking out, you're not working hard enough'

That said, I still havent launched publically, mostly because of all the 'details' of which you speak (core product works but is ugly).

I dont have a need for this day to day, but I was going to sign up to get updates, check out the tool etc.

Since I dont hvae a use for it today, I figured i wouldnt really use the 14 day trial.. What I really wanted was a free version so I could come back and use the tool when I had a need for it in my daily life.
