Re:Self-hosting my photos with Immich on Saturday December 06, 2025 @01:19AM (#46171151)
There is something to be said about NixOS, it really is a matter of setting `services.immich.enable = true;` in a configuration file. I find this really powerful and simpler than docker and docker-compose. But don't get me wrong, I am all for containerization when it comes to other OS/distros. Yes, there is a learning curve for the Nix language and creating your own packages. But anyone who can install a distro can install NixOS. Instead of running your apt/dnf/pacman commands, you edit a file with your package names and services you want to enable, and run `nixos-rebuild switch`. Though, you might find standalone binaries such as uv and its portable Python bundles don't work out the box, there is a a few lines configuration to get it working. Having a single language for configuring all services/applications (neovim, nginx, syncthing, systemd, etc) is refreshing. And of course combined with generative AI, you can set up a lot quickly.

Immich is one of the only apps on iOS that properly does background sync. There is also PhotoSync which is notable for working properly with background sync. I'll take a wild guess that Ente may have got this working right too (at least I'd hope). This works around the limitation that iOS apps can't really run as background apps (appears to me that the app can wake up on some interval, run/sync for a little and try again on the next interval). This is much more usable then for example, the Synology apps for photo sync, which is, the last time I tried, for some reason insanely slow and the phone needs to have the app open and screen on for it fully sync.

Some issues I ran into is the Immich iOS app updating and then being incompatible with the older version of the server installed on my machine. You'd have to disable app updates for all apps, as iOS doesn't support disabling updates for individual apps.

In my specific scenario, the latest version of Immich for NixOS didn't perform a certain migration for my older version of Immich. I had to track down the specific commit that contained the version of Immich which had the migration, apply that, then I was able to get back to the latest version. Luckily, even though I probably applied a few versions before getting the right one, it didn't corrupt the Immich install.

Re:MacBook Air M4 on Wednesday March 05, 2025 @08:49PM (#43275316)
Parent post made me search and I found an Intel Lunar Lake version of the SL7. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/d/surface-laptop-for-busines...

I am between Lenovo X1 Aura, MSI Prestige 13, and this. All have Lunar Lake so battery life should be exceptional, except of course if there are any issues with battery drain during sleep on Linux. Definitely spoiled by Apple not having battery drain issues, but would love pointers on how to solve it.

Re:A record 4.5M workers quit their jobs in November on Wednesday January 05, 2022 @05:17PM (#29815860)
It is clear that higher salaries isn't necessarily helping companies hire. I wonder for things to go back to normal if companies need to start offering extremely generous 6-12 weeks of vacation.
Re:Ask HN: Has Google search become quantitatively worse? on Tuesday November 30, 2021 @03:21PM (#29396979)
It may be worse for some of us but is it getting better for the average/common person?
I am imagining a nice red button on an online credit card statement labelled "Cancel Subscription". Similar to the unsubscribe button/link in emails.
Re:Unity to acquire Parsec for $320M on Tuesday August 10, 2021 @09:41PM (#28136949)
Really wish there were opensource alternatives to Parsec and Rainway that weren't tied down to hardware (Moonlight). As/if we move away from x86 I think it would be a great way to archive old games that haven't found their way to Webassembly.

It would definitely be great to see archive.org use something like it stream old software/games/media without having to distribute it.

Re:Phel: A language inspired by Clojure that compiles to PHP on Friday February 19, 2021 @11:58AM (#26195101)
The cheap hosting provider is possible by PHP only being loaded into memory when needed to run. So you can have tons code ready to run on disk with no performance impact.

So it is definitely nice to see other languages compiled to PHP to make use of the cheap shared hosts.

Re:How Fat Does a Fat Binary Need to Be? on Thursday February 11, 2021 @03:34PM (#26106740)
This looks great! Combining this with Nim would be extremely powerful. Is it a matter of changing compilers like musl or would some tweaks need to be done for it to work with Nim?
Re:GraalVM 21.0 Introduces a JVM Written in Java on Tuesday February 02, 2021 @01:49PM (#26004922)
This is pretty exciting. I have tried to build a native image using GraalVM for Jenkins as mentioned in this article and it was not possible due to Jenkins relying on reflection. Hopefully this helps with resource usage, I always feel a bit of OCD with Java applications tending to require tons of resources and developers being okay with it. Sure, companies have more money to spend and can afford larger instances but it takes away some of the spirit of hobby, DIY, and projects outside of work.

This should also mean that you can build Jython and JRuby static binaries/executables, but it will probably be a large binary.

Re:The Teeniest Tiniest Laptop in the West on Tuesday January 26, 2021 @02:39PM (#25920179)
Completely agree. The fantasy/dream is productivity on the go. But in reality we are productive full size keyboard. Not that you can never become productive on one of these devices but it will take a certain amount of time and one should consider the availability/discontinuation of these devices since they are so niche.

That being said, I am still going to order a PinePhone with the hope that the Psion-like keyboard will make me productive :D

Also check out Box86: https://github.com/ptitSeb/box86

Impressive to see people playing Half-Life 2, Unreal Tournament 99 and 2004 on a Raspberry Pi 4.

Curious if this could be extended to Emscripten (JIT for WebAssembly/Emscripten?) which would be perfect for archiving and portability. Closest project I have seen is DOSBox-X which seems to already have an Emscripten port: https://github.com/joncampbell123/dosbox-x

Re:Please read the paper before you comment on Tuesday August 25, 2020 @04:06AM (#24269116)
I had this idea as well. It only solves the low quality comment problem if that is something the site owners want. In some cases they may benefit from low quality comments.

Before the web, the HTTP POST equivalent was an envelope and stamp and maybe some moderation at the receiving side. People should look into ways to limit comments / filter noise now that it is in abundance.

Re:The Market for Discontinued Photographic Film on Monday August 17, 2020 @05:33PM (#24192444)
I think that photography without film or printing isn't worthwhile (as a hobby). Until I messed around with an instant camera, most of my photos were just dumped into a folder I would never have time to edit them. But with the instant camera, knowing that each shot costs money, I try to focus on taking a better picture or capturing a certain moment. Having a price per shot certainly forces you to improve quality. I also prefer Olympus and Fujifilm cameras for having great out of camera JPEGs that don't really need editing. Paired with the Canon CP1300 mobile 4x6 printer it makes shooting fun like film since you have the intent of printing.
Re:California issues first rolling blackouts since 2001 on Saturday August 15, 2020 @03:40PM (#24171684)
Maybe it just isn't possible with such a large population. On the other hand, US gives you the opportunity to become filthy rich and it probably helps that you have such a large population to use to your advantage (whether it be labor or customers).
Re:Libtorrent adds support for the WebTorrent protocol on Monday July 13, 2020 @03:20PM (#23824511)
This is great news and will help lead to wider adoption. I hope that some progress will be made for handling large files since currently it is stored in-memory: https://github.com/webtorrent/webtorrent/issues/86
Icculus also created this: https://www.icculus.org/ut99-emscripten/

Can Emscripten use existing binaries? Because I thought it needs the original source code (maybe Icculus asked for the source). Combining this with a websocket proxy for networking support makes a really easy way to setup instant LAN parties (no deployment) and in general have a decent way to preserve these games.

Re:The Uncensored Library on Friday March 13, 2020 @04:10PM (#22570467)
I think rather than using an online game as a gateway, using something like GitHub would be more censorship proof. Even if it's just text links only and larger content is hosted elsewhere the government would severely impact software companies by blocking GitHub.
Re:No More Cheap Shipping for Chinese Sellers on Tuesday August 27, 2019 @06:41PM (#20815177)
US taxpayers are not subsidizing shipping costs. Domestic shippers probably are.

Do you have any plans to support building statically linked binaries like Go?
Re:Don’t Get Clever with Login Forms on Friday February 15, 2019 @02:10PM (#19173761)
In my experience I am glad that banks don't use email as login. Most sites compromised were using email as login which is now input for bots to test on other sites.

Having a unique login ID per site such as using [email protected] could help.

Re:Model 3 Mid Range Battery Available on Thursday October 18, 2018 @06:19PM (#18252672)
It's still $45k, now we will have to wait for the non-premium interior option for the $35k price.

EDIT: $40k price since it seems that there will be a smaller battery than this. Seems like a good way to make more money when people wanting the smaller range battery get tired of waiting.

During my layover in Germany, after scanning my bag the security agents wanted to see if my DSLR was actually a camera. They did this by requesting to see live image through the LCD screen. Thankfully it was charged but I wonder how things would have gone if I ran out of battery.
Re:Ericsson and T-Mobile ink $3.5B deal for 5G on Tuesday September 11, 2018 @02:17PM (#17962052)
It would be great to see wireless providers becoming competitors to home ISPs. If some day wireless speeds become comparable, the problem of having only one home ISP would go away.
What makes Allwinner based boards less likely to have mSD corruption over others?
Deleting your social media account would probably be interpreted as you are hiding something rather than protesting privacy issues.
With sslh you can use port 443 for both tinc and https. https://github.com/yrutschle/sslh

Also you can configure haproxy to do the same.

Quadcore with HT 13inch. With Intel 8th generation CPUs, i5 and i7 will become quadcore. Now the question is will Apple use i3 or older generation CPUs for the 13inch or give the 13inch quadcore+ht like the current 15inch.
Maybe this could be used disable Intel ME when other methods do not work?
