That's why I've put <fake> in quotes ;) ... to emphasize that I believe (or hope) that these projects are perfectly real-world and relatively diverse in order to be able to start doing more similar real-world + real-money projects.

My question in regard was basically whether these "fake" personal projects can convince a prospective client that I'm for real. That is, if these personal projects are not on separate domains (like it will be if they were for real clients), wouldn't they look superficial, and yes, fake?

Is there a book about all the aspects of server administration and site deployment for web developers?

I've researched a bit about that but haven't found any.

I agree completely that the admin/deployment aspects are not covered in the books, and from my experience I extrapolate that it can be a big issue and time sink.

A short introduction: I'm a programmer with appr. 8 years of experience mainly in desktop C/C++ apps, currently trying to become freelance web developer. 3 months ago I started my intensive (at least to my standards) study of web development with the goal to become "free" and work from home, with my own schedule, etc...Since I'm constantly reading that a freelance web developer without online...

Ask HN: Recommend book(s) about monetizing a web site/application?

I have a web application in the early development stage. I have a (humble but ambitious) plan to achieve reasonable amounts of traffic compared to the competitor sites or the sites with similar functionalities.Let's assume (fast-forward when version 1.0 of the site is online) that the amount of visitors of the site are according to the plan. Since the functionality offered by the site is...

Ask HN: How to get started with low level Linux programming (iDroid)?

To recap: I'm fascinated by the iDroid project for porting the Android OS to the Apple iOS devices (I own an iPod Touch 1st gen and an iPhone 3GS) and I want to start writing code for the project since it seems really interesting to me as well as a playground to deepen my "hacking"/low-level coding skills.I have over 7 years of C and C++ professional experience, mainly desktop apps, but I need...

Ask HN: How do you track progress of reading technical books?

You have a (big) technical book that involves, for example, learning a new API/library/programming language/OS/etc.How do you track the progress of reading the sections and chapters, the programming examples tried, the references and additional articles read related to something from the book?Maybe I'm a bit anal about that but every time I started reading a technical book after the first 50 or...

Re:Scott Adams: Your Next Gym on Tuesday September 14, 2010 @03:44AM (#1689839)
There is a similar thing called Nike Plus. It's a community web site with a database of the running data of runners/joggers using Nike+ sensors in their shoes (or Nike+ GPS App for iPhone).

And yes, I find it funny to be able to compare my running times, pace, total running distance, etc. to the people around the world, it's like a RPG game doing real things....

Of course, there are drawbacks. For instance, if the sensor isn't properly calibrated the results can be inaccurate. Not the case with the pure GPS tracking app, of course...

Hello,I'll start with the applications that I've already evaluated and/or used:Wikidpad* Pros: fast switching between the edit and view modes; nice syntax (especially for pasting code snippets or just raw ASCII text, nice indenting visual clues); it is standalone application that don't require server; the wiki pages can be kept in flat text database; easy drag-and-drop of file attachments...
