The other day i posted a rant on p2p here on HN and everyone was like, huh! Use whatsapp.

We need to build our own p2p and e2e secure chat client like whatsapp which works on every platform.

Sure, it's possible - skype was exactly this before except for the e2e part.

Why we techies can't? Let's make a group and dissect the problem in our free time. Who is up for it?

So what's the underlying storage? Is it LSM with more tricks and prallezation + probabilistic algorithms + SIMD intrisics?

Then the community does not value you untill you achieve success in the said profession. So it's very risky. Most guys don't choose it because then you've to hide in all family gatherings....

Yea, but I've no skills to make one. I am willing to pay for one, £1 per month.
He is from Balochistan, Pakistan terrorized area and an entrepreneur. Be easy on him, he will add it soon.
Re:Show HN: P2p IRC-inspired browser chat on WebTorrent on Friday August 17, 2018 @08:08AM (#17782153)
I never found any p2p app with similar user experience as WhatsApp.

All people on this site brag of p2p and their technical prowness, yet no one has managed to build a killer p2p chat app. Disgusting!

Probably, they are still debating what programing language to use.

What he means is that, discussion about this is futile, nothing gonna change and life continues.
Re:NYU Makes Tuition Free for All Medical Students on Friday August 17, 2018 @12:32AM (#17780305)
>Because who in their right mind wants to sacrifice 16 years of earning potential, take on 500K of debt only to become an MD with long work days and now prices that are fixed with no other form of negotiation leverage in sight.

Asians/Indians make most MDs in the US because being a doctor is valued a lot in their communities even if you've infinite debt, you still get respect.

Second, most doctors come from doctor families. They've already transversed the path once, and their kids can reuse the knowledge and connections.

So yea, my father is MD and he can easily support 16 years of MD education for me. If you don't have a family with similar resources, obviously either you can take debt which comes with enourmose stress/worries which decrease your chance to complete or not compete at all!

Individualistic people aren't going to find it easier to compete with community backed people.

Re:NYU Makes Tuition Free for All Medical Students on Friday August 17, 2018 @12:26AM (#17780284)
In social settings, absolutely no one asks how much debt you have but everyone asks which university you went to.

>In Germany for instance higher education is free everywhere, I don't see how this could work with private fundraising.

Germany isn't a good example. Germany stands because it can exploit its weaker neighbors, the east block out of their resources and force the companies to book profit and get taxed in Germany.

Germans see each others as bothers. Show me a few German companies where a foreigner is in the executive role?

The whole point of Germany is Germans first. Ofcourse, they can make education free in this setting.

Re:US bosses now earn 312 times the average worker's wage on Thursday August 16, 2018 @11:48AM (#17775684)
it's the same story in football. I am an average player and Ronaldo makes a lot of money, while i nearly went broke playing football.

Pretty, sure most people don't understand what it takes to be a good CEO, so they'll be crying inequality. Inequality comes from the nature.

> Perhaps we can start treating addiction like a disease and not a moral failing?

My friend who died from heroine overdose.

Here is his story, my friend got banned from online forums. In his opinion, he was banned for posting political rants. And moderator told him, do not do this here. So, he felt is not accepted in the community and got addicited to heroine.

These days, some moderators think they are lords of the universe and ban anyone like a robot.

It's failure of the soceity in part of his personal failure.

Re:Reversing the effects of long programming sessions on Thursday August 16, 2018 @06:05AM (#17773325)
I started smoking Cannabis. It has helped me a lot after long programming session.

My mind used to keep racing. I tried everything from playing instrument to swimming but nothing helped.

I would get the flashback of the diagrams, communication, tickets and emails. I would continuously think about the data structure and algorithms, reaearch a lot of them and figure out which one would be most efficient for my employer. I would work out the complexity and implementation in my head. Once i got into accident when thinking about a bug.

But now it's solved after i started taking cannabis.

Re:Reversing the effects of long programming sessions on Thursday August 16, 2018 @05:53AM (#17773286)
> My code is better, I'm healthier, and I get more done per working minute.

It's not about what you are. What market asks is, are you better than others who you can be replaced with? The ones who are ready to scarifice themselves, their health and deliver more code then you. Let's not pretend that his worries are unfounded.

Re:Reversing the effects of long programming sessions on Thursday August 16, 2018 @05:48AM (#17773263)
>If the rest of your comment is true, this is probably false. Seriously, if you train constantly, a 15 year old hasn't had enough time to compete

Efforts are not everything.

Having resources and abilities also matter.

There can be 15 year olds who know far better than people who have spent years in a job.

Let's not pretend that it can't be possible.

Re:Reversing the effects of long programming sessions on Thursday August 16, 2018 @05:46AM (#17773252)
Wow so many people feel insecure to younger folks!

Now, i understand why tech companies have ageism.

Basically, you guys are reinforcing this thing that younger people are far better.

If something like this really happens, then all FDI holders will suck money out of the US and dollar will decline and no longer will be world's currency.

So, this is very unlikely.

Maybe it's time for an unmoderated hackernews where there is everyone, including downvotes expect this flagging thing which should only be for promotional stuff.

Lately, i am tried of moderators shutting down a thread, comments and banning users.

Re:Why you should, and shouldn’t, join a startup on Wednesday August 15, 2018 @05:25AM (#17764710)
I love working at a startup, there is simply no cap on number of hours i can work.

I can meet any other employee without any appointment.

I can try my hands on accounting and legals. Go meet customers and give them the demo when i don't feel like working.

I can collect cash from customers, take a photo of the cash and send it to boss where he sends me a thumbs up emoji.

I often bring kids of my boss or colleagues from their school or drop their wifes to hospital when they are sick or if their want to go to shopping when her guy is debugging the server.

I don't have any family of my own other than a girlfriend. Doing all these things for others give me peace and makes me feel as if i am part of their family.

For an orphan kid, this is all i wanted.

I've helped my collegues mop whole floor when it's their turn in their apartment building.

I don't know if i can get all this in a big company.

After this i got 10% equality in a small company. Post sale where i made 15 million and gave 10 to my girlfriend for her support. I still work there and enjoy everyday.

You need to see where i started when i had nothing, zero saving..... No family.

Today, I've everything and I can't complain.

Re:Why you should, and shouldn’t, join a startup on Wednesday August 15, 2018 @05:14AM (#17764664)
Having worked at both, if you've a family and low motivation to work, i find it easier to hide in a big company than a startup.
Re:Why you should, and shouldn’t, join a startup on Wednesday August 15, 2018 @05:10AM (#17764642)
I got a complement that i don't sound montonouus like a programmer.

Other time, someone said but i don't imagine you as a tech bro.

Re:Ask HN: What ressources would you recommend to start coding? on Wednesday August 15, 2018 @05:05AM (#17764622)
You can try web with JavaScript, vuejs, express or use Golang for serverside, cli tools.

Go will introduce you to more theory than JavaScript.
