Thanks for elaborating!

Possible to Elaborate?
I thought they were using tennis analogy, where player hitting the ball out or on the net without being forced to by the opponent counts as an unforced error.
For some reason many of these people that lose trust in traditional media immediately start trusting "independent media" on YouTube that happens to agrees with their views or ways of seeing the world.

Comment on youtube:

>How does Jordi type commands so quickly?

I did wonder while watching the video if I would have thought the same thing if I wasn't coming from this thread. It was a little too subtle I guess.

>Maybe I'm missing something.

The features you explained are exactly what I was looking for in a mobile browser. In fact, i wish they launch Focus for Desktops operating systems too.

Do you have good resources in mind on Walmart's harmful practices? Yes, I can search internet but looking for long sophisticated essays or even good books on the topic that you may have come across.

I am not from US but currently studying here and haven't thought much about this topic. Walmart, Walgreen and Amazon feel too convenient. I would love to learn more on the topic before it becomes a habit.

Not sure why there is a dichotomy between this and playing a game on phone for 30 minutes to learn coding.

Re:Why I Quit Being So Accommodating (1922) on Thursday May 25, 2017 @05:51PM (#14420414)
>You want to compromise on the stuff that other people find important and hold fast on the stuff that you find important.

Isn't the definition of "important" what people disagree over when it comes to compromise? My girlfriend can say X is super important to her but in my eyes Y is more important than X and hence I will have to let go of X and hold on to Y. Convincing someone of why X or Y is more important than the other is where most of the conflict happens.

>"You need to show love in the ways that other people want to receive it, not the way you want to send it."

This is true and easy to follow but it doesn't capture my concern above which seems to be much more complex than this scenario.

>I won't say which camp I think Prof. Hájek falls into with this Aeon piece

The way you put it in this comment, it may feel to some that you are suggesting the author is trying to indoctrinate. I highly recommend people to read the article itself to find that out. It's doing no such thing in my opinion and makes sure to not sound like having an agenda. The author may simply choose some examples that happen to increase reader's interest and hence make them finish the article and understand the concept better.

He ends with this which is not how you indoctrinate someone:

"Where does this leave us? Well, we did not manage to prove the existence of God, nor prove his non-existence. (I hope you are not too disappointed!) But that’s par for the course in philosophy – it rarely proves anything conclusively. Instead, I hope I have given you some sense of what philosophical reasoning is like, and how that reasoning can be stimulated and enhanced by the use of various heuristics. Along the way, we saw some instances of what followed from what (or not), exposed some sophisms, spotted some fallacies, and policed some of our reasoning."

The fact is that our brains have been so incessantly bombarded with propaganda from different places that we start noticing it even when none exists. In other words, Apophenia.

Re:Why a city should not build a stadium for an NFL team on Thursday February 04, 2016 @12:39AM (#11032239)
All of this is totally true for cricket and even worse(8 fucking hours filled with commercials like american football). My whole country(India) has somehow convinced itself that its a lot of fun when the real reasos are that most of them aren't aware of good alternates and even if they are aware, India isn't doing well in any of those.

>On the other hand, in Omaha, Nebraska, I found some comparable apartments at $500/mo.

This is true for Wisconsin also. I think OP is hitting the right point that many states easily allow you to live comfortably at around 30k p.a. (after taxes). It depends a lot on whether you have a family or not, party a lot or not, materialistic in general or not.

>cheap housing in the U.S. implies almost no public transport options

I am not a citizen but this isn't true for Milwaukee where I have been living for almost 2 years now. I have not needed a car because bus service is awesome and Uber (or Lyft) help me out other times. It also helps if bike tracks are good in your city, so that's another factor to lookout for.

Re:Books Are Getting Longer on Saturday December 12, 2015 @06:18PM (#10724605)
>citing studies showing that only 60% of books bought electronically are ever begun, and completion rates that can fall as low as 20% for some titles.

Well, how about the completion rates of physical books? I am sure most people would rather read smaller, to the point books if they could. Moreover, there are also social brownie points associated with buying thick books. If everyone is talking about it, buying that popular book in physical form will increase the aesthetic look of my "home library" and then when people come over, I can show off how well read I am.

Also the top comment on the article page importantly notes:

"AAARRRGGGGHHH!!!

Count the words, not the pages!!!! Some simple typesetting changes can increase or decrease a books page count significantly.

A bigger book may look more intimidating, but it may also look like better value for money, and if production/material costs have gone down over the last 15 years, I wouldn't be at all surprised if a publisher bumps up the paragraph spacing and brings in the page margins to make a book appear longer than it is."

Re:Google's driverless car is brilliant but so boring on Saturday October 03, 2015 @06:18PM (#10325602)
I think too much has been made out of this thought experiment. Practically, I don't think driverless cars would have any strategy other than "full stop". There are too many variables to consider for any other strategy. Of course there will always be Bayesian priors that these cars will use to avoid such situations to ever happen in the first place.
Re:I am shutting down my bookstore in New Delhi on Tuesday August 04, 2015 @08:59AM (#10003085)
>An Oculus Rift use case?

Funny that you said that. That's exactly what I was imagining few minutes ago. People walking in virtual bookstores, meeting and discussing books with their friends in other countries, instantly exploring and accessing related articles, essays and research papers etc. The ability to touch and feel the book should eventually be integrated in this whole experience. The design decisions for making these interactive virtual shops are fascinating to ponder upon.

I wonder if meetup.com is considering investing money in VR considering most meetups would be online 20-30 years from now.

Re:I am shutting down my bookstore in New Delhi on Tuesday August 04, 2015 @07:24AM (#10002665)
" The art of browsing and the serendipity of finding unconnected books are hard to emulate in the virtual world. "

I am not so sure about this. I always felt internet made this experience seamless and super convenient. Also, the higher confidence(with more data) with which I buy a book has decreased the regret value in case it turned out to be not so good.

Of course, if their was a highly interactive bookstore which had best of both the worlds, I would always prefer it over the virtual one. Maybe someone should focus on making those.

Bangalore seems one of the safest. Astonishing how troublesome some residential places in Delhi are than some others in the same city.
Re:Today is the end of sheloshim for my beloved husband on Thursday June 04, 2015 @06:27AM (#9658353)
I feel 'leaving a legacy' would be dying knowing that your work left some tangible mark on humanity that you shared the planet with. It doesn't have to change people lives twenty years from now. Just the fact that my creations were enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of people in an year(or five years) is the satisfaction most people would happily die with and would include in 'legacy'. Of course there is a different spectrum of 'legacy' for different profession and depending on your work the value of 'legacy' would fall somewhere in the spectrum specific to your work. So comparing 'legacy' across professions might not even make sense as long as you are helping thousands(or some higher number) of people. And as others have said, I believe 'impact' is a better word for hacker/scientific community than legacy.
