That was my initial reaction as well, when I first found the device not being able to update. But look what was the saving grace: SSH/USB/HTTP/Unix with root access, instead of closed systems, hardware that you own 100%.

As software is increasingly "solved" by AI I think this is what will become most important

There is indeed a "USB web interface" toggle under Storage. I've added a note in the final section, thanks.

Someone on Reddit also pointed out there is a support page for the clock issue https://support.remarkable.com/s/article/Unable-to-update-re...

Paper is great for notes, bad at rendering arXiv

I think you're right, the ending is a bit abrupt. Added a closing paragraph to the last section, thanks for pointing that out.

Using old EV batteries in grid frequency control?

Has anyone thought about buying old EV batteries and connecting them to the grid for frequency regulation? Currently the FCR-N market in Finland is such that apparently you could make 30k€ a year with a 100kW setup. The average hourly price per MW has been ~36€/MW so far this year, so assuming you can participate without downtime the naive estimate would be36€/MW * 24h * 365 * 0.1MW = ~31k€This...

See "Software Engineering at Google" https://abseil.io/resources/swe-book/html/ch11.html, the definition of a "small test".

This is roughly my definition of unit test: "tests run in a single process"

It is true. What your imaginary businessperson is saying is also true.

It's bullshit jobs all the way down.

Article is basically a rant against feminism.

What does this have to do with "gratifying one's intellectual curiosity"?

That's client side. If you load 3rd party content into your browser or fail to block, that's on you. I thought usage of ublock origin/privacy badger could be implicitly assumed among the HN crowd.

This Social Cooling site is nonsense.

If you don't like the idea of someone maintaining a "digital reputation" based on your activity on platform X, don't use platform X. It's that simple.

Also: "We should compare this problem to Global Warming." Similarities? Social cooling is subtle and complex, just like global warming! Such insight.

It's open source. You can always start your own fork, no?

I've established a significant portion of my important friendships through work.

I think it happens more easily in smaller companies for sure. Big corporations seem more hollow.

Finn here. Results have been negative on this so far, at least for students before high school [1]. Most children at that stage aren't yet capable of self-directed learning. Problem is compounded by the distractive effect of digital equipment in class.

Is there a way for a small, non-institutional investor to participate in Universa?
