Attention is all they need.

It’s clear that many people don’t understand how the algorithms work. There is no such thing as “bad” engagement on these platforms. Engagement is engagement. Whether you’re supporting the content or violently opposing it, you’re feeding into boosting it further.

If you’re sick and tired of algorithms pushing crap on you that you don’t like, you need to ignore it.

Tools like Firefly that remove you from the algorithm definitely help, but as long as people are engaging with the content, the problem will never go away.

Do you see any meaningful change in symptoms while in a fasted state?

As in, 36 hours+ without food (just water, electrolytes if you want), do the symptoms improve or worsen?

Weirdly I’ve never seen Jim Simons or any Jane Street employees doing this. I wonder why?
It’s not really a “loophole,” it’s a standard way to give away absurd sums of money.

Have you ever tried to donate billions of dollars? It’s actually extremely difficult.

You have to find causes you’re passionate about/things that society needs, find the correct charities to give the money to, make sure your money actually goes towards the thing they say it will (this is difficult), and then figure out how much you can actually donate (you can’t just give N dollars to company Y. They’ve got zero experience managing that much money, and no way to scale into doing it efficiently.)

What happens then is you have $100b to donate, and mostly only do it $10m at a time or less.

Warren’s kids are old now. They’ve all been donating money for YEARS (it’s a mandatory part of their trust).

So yeah, you receive tax benefits by transferring shares to a foundation you also control, but that money is now earmarked for charity. It doesn’t flow both ways, and the laws on this are very tight (bad actors will find a way, but what’s new?).

Re:The American Religion of Self-Storage Facilities on Thursday September 17, 2026 @04:23PM (#49746002)
This literally just happened to me for a storage unit we got to store a bunch of baby stuff while deciding if we’re going to have another kid.

Started at $87/month for a 5x10 unit. Plenty of space, and I added a six-foot-tall shelving unit ($50 from Home Depot) to keep it organized and access stuff when needed.

We’ve had it for maybe 18 months now, and I just realized it’s $204/month for the last 6 months.

It’s at the top of my list to eliminate this storage unit within the next few months.

We also had a 12 month personal limit on how long we’d keep it, but life happens.

I’m not meaning to be abrasive here, but these comments are also getting old and tired.

And it’s not even relevant to what’s actually on the site linked.

Who cares if the site is LLM generated? Did you care before when you saw the same Wordpress theme repeatedly, or Bootstrap layouts?

The content is what’s interesting, and it is.

Edit to clarify: I read the comment as the issue being the look and feel of the site being AI generated - as in, “this website looks AI generated. It sucks.” NOT the content itself being AI generated.

Using AI to spit out cookie cutter layouts is fine, offloading your thinking onto AI is not something I support.

My stance: An AI generated website with the authors original thoughts is fine to me. I don’t care what it looks like, as long as it serves its purpose.

Copy -> paste -> redact secrets

That flow would be considered unsafe, and probably common.

Re:De-Brainrot Vacations on Monday September 07, 2026 @09:55AM (#49598509)
I think it’s great that we’re discussing this more often as time goes on. This is not the first post I’ve read this month about this topic, and that’s a good sign.

I also think it takes a certain level of intelligence to be able to _notice_ these shifts in mental load.

A lot of people are going through this same thing, but their response isn’t “i need to unplug, slow down, and let my mind reset,” it’s quite literally the opposite - they scroll more, binge more, swipe more. Mostly because they aren’t aware of why they feel the way they do.

The more we discuss this issue, openly, the more likely it is we’ll bring attention to it to those people who are currently unaware of why they feel so empty all the time, despite never being more occupied.

I’ve long suspected it’ll take us _almost_ going extinct to actually take this stuff seriously.

There are too few of us who understand asymmetric risk, and too many in power who are willing to roll the dice for the entire species for profit.

Realistically, it will have to get much, much, worse before it gets any better.

IMO this is part of the natural evolutionary cycle.

Microsoft acquires GitHub and subsequently moves all infrastructure to Azure
Re:Ask HN: GitHub employees what's going on? Why? on Monday August 17, 2026 @11:42AM (#49332851)
GitHub is on Azure. Azure is notorious for being terrible. There was a post here recently from an ex-Azure engineer explaining all of this in a multi-part series.

Re:Ask HN: What are you working on? (August 2026) on Monday August 10, 2026 @09:28AM (#49243384)
I quit my job in September to co-found a disclosure editing, sharing, and reviewing platform for real estate professionals.

https://docuview.ai

We’re slowly positioning ourselves as the place where the majority of the transaction takes place, by giving the entire party a single place where communication and transparency can happen.

It’s working out great so far :)

I wonder how long it’ll take this thread to become a proxy of r/creatine.
I can’t prove it, but it feels like the world recently decided that spamming/scamming is acceptable, so the number of spammers/scammers has increased dramatically.

The number of spam calls, texts, emails, iCloud account unlock requests, etc I’ve received in the last year is insane.

Re:USD Purchasing Power in Real Time Since 2000 on Tuesday April 07, 2026 @08:22PM (#47683080)
Good eye. The ticker was using the observed rate of change over the two most recent data points, so it's actually biased towards the most recent inflation numbers. I've updated it to simply use the slope between the oldest (January 2000) and the most recent data.

It won't be 100% accurate, but it's close enough to create a visual. And the number is always updated monthly with real data anyways.

Re:USD Purchasing Power in Real Time Since 2000 on Tuesday April 07, 2026 @08:01PM (#47682915)
I think you're confusing "created a visualization because I thought it would be interesting" with "just learned about inflation." :)

Yeah, same here. Perhaps the Big Mac Index [0] is what you want.

Re:USD Purchasing Power in Real Time Since 2000 on Tuesday April 07, 2026 @07:12PM (#47682519)
Hey all. This was merely intended as a fun visualization of inflation over long periods of time, in a format that’s slightly easier to grok for most people.

That’s it. There’s no further intention behind this, I just thought a real time “decay” visualization would be neat.

Literally everything about how this works is in the source in maybe 30 lines of js. It’s not complicated. Data is from BLS (whether or not that's accurate is another conversation entirely). I auto update the data monthly via a chron job, right around the time new data is published.

I’m not really changing this from where it’s at. It’s done as is. There are other sources out there already if you want to customize the date range or see a graph.

Thanks for checking it out :).

This reply cannot be understated. Those who are strong advocates for highly leveraged equity positions who use real estate to justify either have yet to experience a true market decline, or are simply really green to investing.

If I could leverage 4:1 on the total market index using a fixed 30 year loan without the ability to force a sale I would in a heartbeat. Unfortunately, that’s just not how it works.

And anything claiming to be the solution to that (like a leveraged ETF such as UPRO), suffers from volatility decay that causes it to underperform or eventually go to zero in horizontal markets (e.g. lost decades).

I refuse to pay for this. I’m willing to wager it will be free within a reasonable amount of time.
I picked up a car from a mechanic the other day and we got to riffing about my own Tesla. He admitted to having friends that worked at Tesla on the manufacturing line. In his own words, these guys are “complete idiots,” and “do shrooms before assembling cars.”

I want to take his words with a grain of salt, but…I kinda believe it. Obviously hearsay means nothing, though.

Not sure if you’re discrediting the parent comment or pointing out the reality of it.

But yes this is something only someone with a high income would say. And yes, it’s true.

Beyond a certain income, the wrong job can be soul sucking and depressing. And it takes achieving that level of income to fully appreciate that reality.
