It’s direct file.
Re:Rack-mount hydroponics on Sunday March 15, 2026 @12:12PM (#47388802)
What did you do with the crop?
No, I wouldn’t show up to work. I could invest it conservatively and live off of that forever.

However… I don’t know what I’d do in the time that I would normally work. I’m working on retiring early so I need to figure that out.

Entering data into a Google Sheet on mobile is not fun in my opinion.
The fees will be the same regardless of where you buy Vanguard funds.
Re:Redmine – open-source project management on Saturday July 22, 2023 @10:36AM (#36826599)
The company I work for switched from redmine to jira few years ago, after using redmine since 2009 or so. It was a really bad decision spearheaded by a single project manager.

I miss redmine. I hate having to see the constant interstitial loading animation in Jira. And working through small modals. Just load the damn page for the link I clicked on. All the “single page application” junk is rarely executed well. But I can’t say that it or I’m a dinosaur. Sorry the rant.

This isn’t surprising. It’s like saying “don’t post sensitive/proprietary info on stackoverflow and don’t blindly paste code from there into your professional work.”
It’s sad that we have to choose between physical safety and privacy.
Re:Life before smartphones (2020) on Monday August 02, 2021 @06:58PM (#28043741)
I agree this is sad. However, as a child of the 90s, I lost the attention war to my parents' TV. Maybe I just had absent parents, but I feel like most parents haven't been interested in their children for a while now.

The F-150 Lightning only comes in Super Crew (4-door).
Re:Robinhood is said to draw on bank credit lines amid tumult on Thursday January 28, 2021 @09:36PM (#25952991)
Robinhood allows up to $1,000 to be used "instantly" just by the user initiating a transfer. So Robinhood doesn't have the money yet, but the user can buy stocks -- meaning they are using Robinhood's money.
I would think the people knowledgable enough to know their browser is making requests to FB without actually visiting FB would also be knowledgable enough to block it themselves (with their hosts file, ublock, etc) and not need the ISP to do so.
I use 125% on HN with a 23" 1920x1080 monitor. HN text is comically small.

You might try sorting the countries in your select input. They appear to be in some random order and I almost gave up looking for the country I was interested in.

And target dates usually have a higher expense ratio than funds like VTI. So you keep more of your investment income by doing it manually.
Re:Some Details of My Personal Infrastructure on Thursday February 21, 2019 @09:05PM (#19222495)
From the article:

"Often I’ll do a meeting where I have lots of people in case we need to get their input. But for most of the meeting I don’t need all of them to be paying attention (and I’m happy if they’re getting other work done)."

So they're not paying attention because he enjoys having excess people on calls and wasting their time.

Sounds like torture. The CEO wants you on the call, probably won't need you, and you're supposed to feel comfortable disengaging when he's berating coworkers about a missing third argument in a function's documentation.

Welcome to a comment section on the internet. I see you are new here. I can tell that by the way you are surprised at the unhelpful criticism. I do not have any advice for you. Please send help if you have any ideas on how to fix this.
The new leak came from an S3 server, which would have been locked down by default. Someone had to make it open to the public.
Re:Ask HN: What is your best passive income 2019? on Tuesday January 15, 2019 @12:32PM (#18912980)
Capital One 360 is offering 60 month CDs at over 3% now. Just a fee of 6 months of interest if you withdraw early. Pretty liquid and would get you an extra $75/month of income if you just did half of your savings (+$150/month for all of it).
What do you mean by "allowed"?
Re:Do People Really Think Earth Might Be Flat? on Wednesday August 22, 2018 @07:21PM (#17823139)
> Even then, I'm not sure why the Earth being flat would have anything to do with Mercury's visibility, since it would still be visible even if the Earth were flat.

They're trying to imply that a spherical Earth would prevent a visible Mercury at night. It's still nonsense.

Re:Do People Really Think Earth Might Be Flat? on Wednesday August 22, 2018 @07:19PM (#17823133)
The second one is pretty obviously misleading (https://imgur.com/a/zZS3nti).

It's proposing the idea that you can't see anything in a mirror that is facing around the corner from you. Venus is reflecting the Sun's light to you on the night-side of Earth, just like a mirror reflects an image to you even though you can't physically see around a corner.

Think of it as Venus orbiting inside Earth's orbit, but not directly between the Earth and the Sun at the time you can see Venus.

This explains it better than I can: https://www.quora.com/How-is-Venus-visible-in-the-night-sky-...

Vibrating alarms are nice. About the only thing I miss from my Fitbit.

Nice, I have never seen that model. I wear the DB-36[1]. I've tried many other watches, but I always come back to this model. Love it.

Re:The “Facebook Nevers” on Monday June 18, 2018 @06:11PM (#17342031)
Not that I could find. I remember trying to use an alternative email even, but it was my back up email on Facebook and it linked them automatically.
Re:The “Facebook Nevers” on Monday June 18, 2018 @05:56PM (#17341966)
"The fall of Facebook was never going to be people quitting the service en masse — it’s too interwoven into the fabric of the way many of us use the web these days — it was always going to be the people who never really use the service in the first place. Kids."

I've noticed this amongst my family. The cousins, etc I have under 16 either don't have a facebook account or abandoned shortly after creating it. It's "uncool" because their parents see everything they do on there -- I know you can customize your sharing, but I doubt they know or care to be that careful on Facebook.

"This is why the smartest thing Facebook ever did was buy Instagram. Instagram is likely past a billion active users on its own now."

Unfortunately, this is why I don't use IG. I want to, but it seems impossible for me to keep it out of my Facebook like I want to. FB always pops up with "look what your friends are doing on IG" and I don't want my photography to be plastered in front of my grandparents.

Re:Ask HN: What apps did you build for yourself and why? on Thursday May 24, 2018 @11:49PM (#17150471)
I wrote a simple web-based RSS client: https://github.com/travisred/bottomfeeder

I got tired of looking for a lightweight option that would run on pretty much any VPS or webhost. And I can modify it any time I want without learning a large codebase.

I don't know what kind of machine you're using, but that's not true for any CPU/disk from the last 8 years or so.
