This undeserved downvoting I keep seeing might make me just vomit HN out of my life.

I agree with you, it was a bit melodramatic. And slow. I don't know if I should bother reading it.

People in an open relationship are less happy. Why?
Re:How Education is Ruining Your Life on Monday February 15, 2010 @05:36PM (#1127738)
Yeah, I'm sick of seeing that idea being passed about without sources. I think most of the people talking about it haven't even heard of John Taylor Gatto, which is where it came from.

But, do you have sources?

Does that mean it happens often enough for us to worry about it?

I realised that a few weeks ago, without reading the article.

Somehow, I'd rather suicide than give up.

Re:Teens in Tech: They’re Here, They’re Young, Get Used To It on Wednesday February 10, 2010 @10:45PM (#1116829)
Yeah, but it's more the pop monoculture that irks me. I wish people would explore the arts more, so that it's people sharing what they have discovered than having something common to talk about (assuming that's why we have pop culture). At least it's still social, that way.
Re:How old were you when you decided to start giving up? on Wednesday February 10, 2010 @04:10PM (#1116028)
I was expecting something completely different by the title. I was thinking of how, when you grow older, your curiosity dies because it takes too much effort to satisfy it.

This worries me. I have a friend who was saying the same thing, but he was uninterested in doing anything about it.

Who was that guy who suggested using lines written plus lines deleted. Was it Knuth?

Ask HN: What web hosting do you use?

I'm considering getting hosting for something like a blog, so I'm wondering: what do you use?I want to pay in GBP, but it doesn't really matter.Edit: I won't be able to reap the comments till tomorrow; that is, the 10th of February, 2010.

(Briefly, it's an essay on someone who disparaged Shakespeare, but was ignored and forgotten.)

Why did you link this?

Re:"Don't you dare waste your fucking time" on Tuesday February 09, 2010 @12:20PM (#1112646)
That's what I usually try to do. It's the ones on literature that get me. There's not much to be said about a play by Shakespeare.
Re:"Don't you dare waste your fucking time" on Tuesday February 09, 2010 @10:05AM (#1112310)
But... but.. I have to go to school! And write essays no one will ever want to read, essays that don't even aspire to be something interesting!
Re:A writing career becomes harder to scale on Monday February 08, 2010 @01:29AM (#1109178)
The last two paragraphs, are the most interesting:

'Perhaps there is a clue to be found near the end of Solotaroff's essay: "Writing itself, if not misunderstood and abused, becomes a way of empowering the writing self. It converts anger and disappointment into deliberate and durable aggression, the writer's main source of energy. It converts sorrow and self-pity into empathy, the writer's main means of relating to otherness. Similarly, his wounded innocence turns into irony, his silliness into wit, his guilt into judgment, his oddness into originality, his perverseness into his stinger."

'The writer who has experienced this even for a moment becomes hooked on it and is willing to withstand the rest. Insecurity, rejection and disappointment are a price to pay, but those of us who have served our time in the frozen tundra will tell you that we'd do it all over again if we had to. And we do. Each time we sit down to create something, we are risking our whole selves. But when the result is the transformation of anger, disappointment, sorrow, self-pity, guilt, perverseness and wounded innocence into something deep and concrete and abiding -- that is a personal and artistic triumph well worth the long and solitary trip.'

Perhaps the first time creating something is the most difficult.

No, that also doesn't work. Even going to the actual website doesn't work.
