I've learned that Greatest X of all time usually just means, greatest A-hole of all time.

Because they absorb so much energy from the universe in order to fulfill their self serving destiny that they cannot help but be viewed as selfish. They quite literally demand the respect that they receive.

Call it the theory of conservation of human energy.

Re:Ruby Threads and the Global Interpreter Lock in C on Thursday November 27, 2014 @03:15PM (#8668617)
The only question I have is, how much work is it to create a C based ruby without a global interpreter lock.
Re:The Horror of a 'Secure Golden Key' on Wednesday October 08, 2014 @05:17PM (#8429517)
"Good guys". Apple. Google? Whuy? Why do adults have the moral understanding of a 10 year old.
This will be the first time humans have ever underestimated nature
Re:The Truth We Won't Admit: Drinking Is Healthy on Saturday September 06, 2014 @10:44PM (#8280171)
I would be more concerned with the mental health effects than the physical health effects anyway.
Re:Why haven't China's cities learned from America's mistakes? on Thursday August 28, 2014 @03:00AM (#8236192)
I agree, and I would argue that this type of development is more economic. People want cars because they will take you everywhere. Why are the futurists arguing for an outmoded dense city life, just so they can stare at their iPhones on the bus? Just look at the price of land or housing in dense areas and how they inevitably become centers for the wealthy.
Re:The Social Laboratory: Singapore's Surveillance State on Sunday August 03, 2014 @02:20AM (#8127239)
I think the individual has always struggled against the system. It's just nature.

I'm just surprised anyone would be excited about Singapore. You need to get a permit to give any kind of free speech in the 'free speech area'. Unsurprisingly, they don't grant permits to people who want to speak their mind.

It's the economy, stupid.
Re:Billion-Dollar Billy Beane on Sunday July 27, 2014 @06:11PM (#8094158)
Beane doesn't have much utility in a franchise with a big budget
Dwarf fortress is amazing, the algorithms it must use must be pretty interesting, it would be interesting to piece it out and open source it.

Dwarf fortress also benefits from completely simplified UI. Meaning it can go really deep without worrying about how the rocks are generated. Does magnetite look like pyrite?

It already looks like the scope of No Man's Land has gotten out of hand, maybe it will offer some of the joys of dwarf fortress, but not if it's purely visual.

Re:What Killed My Sister? on Monday April 28, 2014 @08:25PM (#7664067)
People in general seem unsympathetic to difficult mental states, especially people who can't imagine what it would be like
Re:A Gossip App Brought My High School to a Halt on Monday April 28, 2014 @08:24PM (#7664062)
I like how sites like this expose true human nature. It seems like we spend a lot of time denying it, but we love to pick on the vulnerable.
Re:A Gossip App Brought My High School to a Halt on Monday April 28, 2014 @07:56PM (#7663942)
Obligatory question: was the student shot by another student?
Re:No Exit on Friday April 25, 2014 @03:39AM (#7645191)
I guess everyone is lacking that bit of information that separates them from the real comptrollers
Re:Why UPS Trucks Rarely Turn Left on Saturday April 05, 2014 @09:11PM (#7539187)
I have a theory that traffic in cities would be much reduced if we removed left have turns all together.

Although I guess in San Francisco most left turns on busy intersections are prohibited, so maybe they already solved this.

Then if you make traffic in the alternative direction go over or under then there would be no stopping ever.

What is a tock?
Re:Why So Many Musicians Are Leaving San Francisco for L.A. on Wednesday January 15, 2014 @11:07PM (#7068032)
Well it's the musician who called it a creative desert.

He'll learn soon enough that it's the desert where 90% of America's culture comes from. It's hard to understand without living there.

Welcome to the wild west
Re:Why I want Bitcoin to die in a fire on Wednesday December 18, 2013 @02:32PM (#6929990)
Yeah I thought we stopped arguing for 'civil society' 100 years ago, when we realized that it was a sham
Re:US drone strike kills 15 civilians in Yemen by mistake on Thursday December 12, 2013 @07:22PM (#6898297)
Or perhaps it's too smart
Re:America is separating into peasants and scholar-gentry on Tuesday December 10, 2013 @11:37PM (#6885916)
I would think that computers will continue to increase social inequity, since now just a few people can run a multi-million dollar company.
Re:The Copenhagen Wheel [video] on Saturday December 07, 2013 @10:24PM (#6868832)
If it's anything like my electric bicycle, the regenerative braking doesn't really count for much
Re:The Copenhagen Wheel [video] on Saturday December 07, 2013 @10:21PM (#6868827)
Well, this is basically the price of an iphone. The market said it could bear that price.
Re:Ben Noordhuis's Departure on Wednesday December 04, 2013 @02:55AM (#6845591)
I think most of the biggest core contributors are unable to project that kind of emotional intelligence.

Because, well, they are programming, not working PR

Re:Why women lose the dating game on Friday October 25, 2013 @12:24PM (#6612558)
Shrug. As a thirty year old career driver successful programmer, it's hard to find a thirty year old woman with even half a brain.
Re:The Melancholy of Subculture Society on Monday October 21, 2013 @05:49PM (#6588445)
I enjoy the ideas that are thrown around in the article, and it seems to oscillate between pro and anti subculture. I definitely agree with the advantages of sticking to a subculture, but am also stuck with a horrible feeling of dispassion when I see people who are limited by their own subculture, and unable to interact outside their chosen subculture.

I agree that the larger culture suffers as people retreat from it, and no more is that more evident that the city. A large city like Los Angeles feels much more healthy culturally than a small city like San Francisco, and I think it's because people don't feel the need to retreat into their own subcultures, and not give anything back to the larger community. What makes Los Angeles great is the ability for many of the people to communicate between subcultures, and that would be my argument for what gives a place a "healthy" culture.

However, the American culture as a whole has always been fragmented, and perhaps it isn't possible to reconcile the separate parts. I certainly tried to cross between Los Angeles, Chicago, Portland, and San Francisco cultures, and found that it is almost impossible to understand the deep cultural assumptions of people who identify with one city, given experience with another.

You and your xkcd subculture
Re:FlyKly Smart Wheel on Wednesday October 16, 2013 @10:29PM (#6563365)
If you don't mind having to position a battery on your bike, for $399 you can already get an electric wheel.

http://www.electric-bike-kit.com/hill-topper.aspx

Otherwise I've been using a wheel and battery from http://www.leafmotor.com/hub-motors/16r-electric-hub-motor.h...

If you're more into plugging stuff together yourself. They also offer more wheel sizes, like 700c.

Re:Malibu homeowners foiled by $30K Kickstarter campaign on Monday June 24, 2013 @06:25PM (#5936154)
Why would you drive all the way up to Malibu when LA has an uninterrupted stretch of beach that is 50 miles long?
