Noted, thanks.

Ask HN: Advice for a CTO Visiting Silicon Valley

As the CTO of a small European startup, I will have the opportunity to fly to Silicon Valley (San Mateo) next week. I have a free day, and I’d love to immerse myself in the tech/startup atmosphere—not for business networking, but rather to fulfill a childhood dream.Could you recommend any must-see places? Where can I find information about open tech events? Are there any startups where you can...

Such a link could be created automatically when you register for a car plate.

I don't know this field of research thus my question: why such a high framerate is consider as a feature at all? Does it help with learning rate?
Re:The Endless Maze algorithm (Atari 2600) on Saturday April 20, 2024 @04:34AM (#40095793)
For Commodore there is this classic recipe [1] for infinite maze:

10 PRINT CHR$(205.5+RND(1)); : GOTO 10

[1] https://10print.org/

The broader contexts could be this: look at this puzzle as a way for reinvent sorting as a delegation of operations (split + combine) instead of traditional "swapping" of values. As CPU arithmetic is faster then memory operations some real treasure may be hidden in this new approach.

Absolutely love it! I've been looking for such a tool for a long time. Just a looooong text file when I can write my snippets. I like UI, icon and even the name :) One suggestion - make it collapsable.

Re:Sam Altman: Why You Should Fear Machine Intelligence (2015) on Wednesday November 22, 2023 @04:44AM (#38377118)
"Most machine intelligence development involves a “fitness function”—something the program tries to optimize. At some point, someone will probably try to give a program the fitness function of “survive and reproduce”. Even if not, it will likely be a useful subgoal of many other fitness functions. It worked well for biological life."

Interesting, how this correlates with this Bible passage from Genesis: "God blessed them, and God said to them, 'Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it' ".

Probably I am paranoid but showing battery and network status together with the rest of widgets (even configuration icon) seems like a security thread, no?

Why are they still called GPU? PPU (Parallel Processing Unit) sounds like a better name.

Meanwhile other tech companies (just from the last 2 weeks):

- LinkedIn lays off 563 engineering roles

- Stack Overflow is laying off another 28%

- Meta to lay off employees in metaverse silicon unit on Wednesday

- Epic lay off 830 people thanks to “unrealistic” metaverse ambitions

Apparently they don't have such deep pockets...

There is a great book on that matter "What is life" by Erwin Schroedinger (of Erwin Schroedinger fame): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/What_Is_Life%3F

I like clarity of your examples. You could draw an inspiration from Daniel Shifman's book "Nature of code" (https://natureofcode.com/book/) - see chapters 2 and 3 for instance.

nnn [1] seems like a more advanced tool (directory management, copying, renaming, packing/unpacking) and pluggable.
