Who was worse, Trump or Nixon?
Re:Restrooms along the Norwegian Scenic Routes on Sunday November 01, 2026 @07:02AM (#50324819)
Generally building public works becomes quite difficult when you have one dominant sector pushing up wages (oil and gas in this case). See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baumol_effect

I had an early one and I vaguely remember it had a game on it.

Is it criminal to sell an exploit?
Re:Why are good developers so wary of agentic development? on Thursday October 29, 2026 @01:08PM (#50292432)
Assuming management has the ability to tell the difference and not just count lines of code or commits.
You would expect that with an aging population.

Or just ride the shortage out with high prices.

Not in the EU and UK.

There's always a lot of caveats with linux.
Re:Apple introduces the new 14‑inch MacBook Pro with M6 on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @02:48PM (#50263919)
The rumour is they aren't going to bump the pro and pro max.
Re:New iMac with M6 on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @01:19PM (#50262496)
If you have a 27" iMac with the Retina display then you can get a kit to transform it into a monitor.
Re:New iMac with M6 on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @01:17PM (#50262449)
The P20 is a 28" display so is much lower pixel density than the iMac.
Re:Software may be getting worse, but it used to be horrible on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @09:10AM (#50258669)
What happened is ordinary people started using computers. In the early days of the industry developers could assume a reasonable ability in their users. As computers and smart phones became ubiquitous they could no longer continue with that assumption. You see reorganising columns as a feature, the average user is totally confused and stopped in their tracks when they do it by accident.
Re:AI promised less work. I've never worked more on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @09:00AM (#50258504)
Yeah, all those losers in the office that couldn't find their way out of a paper bag suddenly look as productive as you do.

>The difference is one engineer can you work on many sequential tasks in parallel.

Then they aren't sequential.

>About 85% of Microsoft's revenue comes from B2B/Enterprise/Governments.

This is why I don't use their products anymore, they aren't made for me.

>LinkedIn (6%)

Wow. I would never have guessed it was that high.

I'm waiting for the day when either Broadcom or Bending Spoons buys the Windows division.
To me it seems the important skills are good communication, attention to detail and some taste. All were important before AI.
Less than a quarter of their workforce is in the Seattle area.

You must have lived in a different reality to me.

Re:Behind the scenes at the NeXT Computer office on Monday October 26, 2026 @05:53AM (#50241387)
To some extent everything was like that unless you had bleeding edge hardware. Running an up to date version of Windows was endlessly frustrating until the Core 2 Duo came along.
Re:Behind the scenes at the NeXT Computer office on Monday October 26, 2026 @05:49AM (#50241359)
I don't know. I was watching a video about Bill Atkinson the other day (the guy behind the original Mac UI) and he worked from home because it was the only way he could get things done.
Re:Ask HN: Are tab completion models dead? on Sunday October 25, 2026 @01:00PM (#50233654)
This worries me the most. Will all the tools we used before AI become obsolete and disappear. Is Ruby heading for the graveyard because LLM’s seem to prefer Python. If we aren’t careful we could end up with a lot less choice of tools.
Samsung does seem to be particularly bad. I’ve heard enough stories that I would never buy one of their products.
I suppose the smart criminals no longer use mobile phones.
