News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

Unfortunately, they are also changing that a bit:

> Thank you for using Daybreak Blue and for being part of our Trusted Access program. We are reaching out to notify you of an upcoming change to how your Daybreak Trusted Access data may be used. Daybreak use requires you to enroll in Advanced Account Security, which turns off the “improve the model for everyone” setting. However, from November 29, we may use content from Daybreak Blue sessions on personal accounts to improve our models, including to help strengthen safeguards against cyber misuse. We will use Daybreak Blue interactions for these purposes, even when the “improve the model for everyone” setting is off.

Re:Scaling Git at OpenAI on Tuesday November 03, 2026 @06:10AM (#50350506)
Do you have a lot of past chats? The desktop app has been unusable for me when I had more than 20 chats in the side bar. Deleting / archiving fixed most of the lags for me.
Re:Kimi K3.1 Pro and K3.1 Pro Highspeed on Saturday October 24, 2026 @06:54AM (#50220056)
Could it be because Claude / ChatGPT are the most viral models and thus are more likely to be in the training set so when someone asks "Which AI are you?" the likeliness of Claude and ChatGPT being a reasonable answer is higher?
I'd assume hugged to death
Re:Railway Security Disclosure on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @07:24PM (#50189049)
It is… for their business.
Depends how your logging works. If you ingest logs to a remote server it's quite hard for an attacker to clean those up. Also I'd guess that most of the PHP exploits tried today weren't sophisticated but rather brute force and then either cryptomining or botnetting or something like this.
I guess for companies this can be nice? Run some inference in the off-hours on the machines that you already have. Could be useful for analytical tasks that don't require to be instant. On the technical side this doesn't seem that groundbreaking for me though.
Re:Incident with Actions, Pull Requests and Issues on Monday October 12, 2026 @11:57AM (#50058280)
It's not that expensive, yes - but it's more than 5x what we are currently paying for it.
Re:Incident with Actions, Pull Requests and Issues on Monday October 12, 2026 @11:41AM (#50058028)
Enterprise is the highest tier of paying tho. Our company is working on the Team plan is pretty much affected by each and every of those outages.
Re:Incident with Actions, Pull Requests and Issues on Monday October 12, 2026 @11:40AM (#50058018)
They probably had a redistribution of free-tier and paid-tier usage in the last year-ish.

Just backseat gaming but a lot of those issues could probably be solved if they'd (temporarly) reduce the free tier. I'd say simply dropping Actions from it would reduce the load by a lot because then most vibe coders wouldn't bother integrating a CI/CD and either just use local pre-commit scripts or stop using those entirely. Not using a CI also drops the requirement for using PRs on solo-dev projects so they might also reduce load there.

Re:GitHub Actions Has Problems on Monday October 05, 2026 @05:52PM (#49971377)
> We continue to monitor for full recovery and are working to mitigate ongoing issues affecting other services, including access to repository lists, licensing, and billing pages

Those issues affecting other services are not visible anywhere else on the status page, are they?

Re:Web Search API on Monday October 05, 2026 @07:32AM (#49963503)
I wonder if the three search engines get access to cloudflare protected sites without any captcha or bot interventions
Re:Gemini 4 Argon on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @04:21PM (#49913822)
Are you enrolled in Fairwind?

> Today, we’re announcing our new frontier model, Gemini 4 Argon, which is rolling out to a set of trusted cyber defenders through our Fairwind Program.

Still waiting for the moment where GPT either orders 4,000 pounds of raw beef or just deletes the whole OpenAI repo because it "thought the easiest way to remove all bugs is by deleting the whole repository"
Kinda same but I miss my 5.3 Codex. Thing lasted forever on my $20 subscription and with detailed prompts was able to pretty much implement everything I requested it to do with a acceptable quality.
Re:Sonnet 5.5 on Monday September 28, 2026 @02:18PM (#49882157)
I recently wanted to work with ESP 32 and bluetooth presence detection for my smarthome. Claude also immediately flagged the request and degraded it to Sonnet 4.6. Went to Codex which had no issues
Re:Show HN: Hntui – A TUI for Hacker News on Monday September 28, 2026 @09:29AM (#49877658)
It uses OpenTUI which is build in Zig: https://github.com/anomalyco/opentui
Re:100s of flights cancelled at UK airports due to ATC issue on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @02:09AM (#49621832)
I mean one could do A/B weeks. Have two separate systems that do the same job managed by two different teams etc. and switch between the primary system every week. This way you can ensure both systems are stable.
Re:100s of flights cancelled at UK airports due to ATC issue on Tuesday September 08, 2026 @05:53PM (#49617657)
Currently stuck at an airport in london. It's insane how little information the staff here has. Also mindboggling that in aviation, where everything has a backup or two there seems to be a single company with a single software that can take down an entire airspace which most like will create worldwide ripple for the next days.
Re:Check if a file was made with Claude on Wednesday September 02, 2026 @11:31AM (#49537808)
Unfortunately this is just for Media? Some manual tells for Excel or PDFs is to check the author. Claude creates PDFs via wkhtmltopdf so the PDF Producer will be Qt and the Content Creator is wkhtmltopdf. Xlsx files are being created via openpyxl so in the metadata that is the author.
Re:Disruption with Some GitHub Services on Wednesday August 26, 2026 @03:26PM (#49454474)
i noticed it today as well - typing "g" is enough to go to the statuspage. and surprisingly often when i go there by accident, they have an incident…
also it sounds like users benefit but they mostly don't. resets mostly benefitted OpenAI and only gave users few additionals hours.
completely offtopic but how are you always there with a valid dupe link?
Re:Ask HN: GitHub employees what's going on? Why? on Monday August 24, 2026 @10:39AM (#49420453)
Well, maybe not completely down but the amount of navigation issues, screen flickers and unhydrated stylesheets I have everyday is not something I'd expect from such a product.
And something similar will happen with chat control I'm afraid. Make every public messenger scan all messages to "protect the children" and those people that would be affected by these scanners will simply find another way to communicate (or build their own E2EE chat app like EncroChat in the past) and the only ones that suffer are the normal people who are now being surveilled and with no real reason.
Re:How Bluesky draws its logo on screenshots on Monday August 17, 2026 @07:57PM (#49339350)
No because per default the input is not cleared when screenshotting. If you‘d implement this yourself for security reasons you'd most likely blur / overlay the whole screen when the app enters background state.
Re:Tell HN: GitHub Is Experiencing Degraded Performance on Monday August 17, 2026 @02:53PM (#49335861)
Wow they just went into "another" outage
