Re:The radical moral implications of luck in human life (2020) on Wednesday February 01, 2023 @10:49PM (#34621791)
I don't know how we can even consider that luck doesn't play the biggest role in life. We are influenced by a trillion of decisions made by people that directly pass through our lives everyday. To your competitors in business to the people that decide they are sober enough to drive at the same time you are driving.

Not to mention the physical world which plays no favourites.

I look at Bezos/Musk/etc and they are on top of wealth pyramid solely because someone has to. Next year it will be someone else.

All we can do is try to make clear rational decisions and then let the universe unfold as it will.

Thanks for this. Why would I need to 'ban the US'?

Ask HN: Where to host a online game which pays out cash prizes?

I am developing an online game. The entry would be as little as $10US but the winner's take could be significant depending on the number of people that play. Now I am a very ethical person, and everything will be above board, but I want to host it in a country which has very few regulations on these types of games, which most countries consider as gambling. This will add a nightmare amount of...

A slow cooker. Add meat and vegies in the morning and come home tired to a house filled with the smells of a great dinner waiting.
Squat cage, good bar, 220kg weights, bench press, farmer walk bar. 12 years ago. Best $2,500 I've ever spent.
I always thought that there is a specific cadence or rhythm to the human mind and I would create some music (or sequence of tones) that would get people addicted and I would sell it on a per-listen basis and make trillions.

Maybe they should maintain the postal boxes, have enough sorting machines, maintain the necessary manpower/processes, and remain independent enough to deliver the fucking mail.
I developed https://www.activegoals.net with mental health in mind especially since I deal a lot with the autism community who usually have poor executive functioning.
I knew I would get this answer if at all. Just shows that humans feel we are at the centre of the universe, whatever that universe is. Sounds like the 1500's all over again. I don't understand how one can answer like this. We can't even explain the simplest of experiments; the double-slit experiment, but here we have some HN subscriber saying bullshit to something that he/she doesn't understand, and even pressed the down-vote to further show their disgust at the insinuation that the universe may not adhere to their ill-formed, or how do I say politely, childish view of what the universe could actually be.

But he/she said that 'clearly' I am wrong. Not thinking that maybe reality isn't quite what we think with the small amount of information that we have at the moment.

The only physical limitation is the Planck length and everything above this is fair game. Our universe could be a solitude brain and the multiverse could be the collective of brains but damn I've been shot-down by a HN subscriber that told me it's clearly bullshit.

The more we understand about the universe, the more it's structure resembles the brain. Galaxies, or more accurately, the black holes in the middle of galaxies resemble the neurons and these filaments and magnetic fields are the synapses.
Could we tell the WH the same thing?

I'm sorry I read about S-21 years ago because it stays with me to this day due to one thing: the lack of mercy.

It somehow compels me to go see it even though I have resisted the idea. I know I will one day.

Who cares. Firms now want so many tax concessions that cities probably lose more than they gain with these corporations.

So tired of this emphasis on the economy and job growth. The key is well-being, and a city that concentrates on well-being will get all the employment opportunities they want without a single concession. Of course, while employment opportunities last in the coming automation and robotic world.

I have an aspergers son and run a 120-member social group for autistic adults and I can say that the #1 issue for the autistic wrt social interaction skills is that they care too much about the audience. I wrote a blogpost about it: https://ericlifeadvise.blogspot.com/2020/02/caring-what-othe...

People don't want to research themselves. How can they think that a news-feed thinks the way they do?
Re:Ask HN: I want to resign with nothing lined up on Thursday April 23, 2020 @03:15AM (#22953566)
Back in the early-90s, I quit IBM Lab job the same way. I was single but had a mortgage, car payments, and just quit on a whim because I just could not work. Would stare at the screen and just couldn't do it.

I had the idea of creating a service to optimise poorly-running software because I did a bit of that at IBM. So I took 2 weeks vacation, cold-called and got 2-3 appts and quit. Didn't understand business or anything really. Only got one paid gig for $600.

Went into consulting for a few years while building software to sell. My girlfriend at the time got me into real estate and I developed a neat little package which netted me $90,000 first year (not bad back then) plus yearly upgrades. Then somehow got into telecommunications when the deregulation happened. Never really had a typical 'employee' job. Had countless failures, one medium success, and one big success.

Moral: Never wait until things are 'ready' before quitting. It's like deciding to have a kid; there is no good time. It's amazing what hard work and the threat of failure will do to one's motivation.

I can't process the information that is coming at me

I'm a well-educated man yet I find it very difficult to process the information that is coming at me. The number of issues that hit me every day just makes me want to hide in a foxhole until it's all over like some soldier. Yet I know it will not be over. In fact, I know it will be progressively worse.I'm educated and aware and I can't cope. How can anyone cope?

I graduated at the height of the dot com era and haven't made it - you may too.

I found it quite charming in a nostalgic sense.
This is such a good answer because sometimes a system where people are used to solve the issue is the right way.

And I say 'system' because as long as the company knows that Sally does the updating each day, but if Sally is on holidays or sick or quits, then there is a protocol where the work is done and the checks/balances are done to ensure that that mortgage rate change is done.

Re:Ask HN: How do you update multiple disparate databases? on Thursday March 26, 2020 @03:58PM (#22697306)
There could be a rate-change once a week on average. Of course if there is a central bank change then probably every mortgage product will need to be changed that day.

Rates are the important data-item but some of the legacy DBs will need to be notified of changes like fees, as well.

No, no interview. He's a friend of mine but I kept his problem in my head to possibly provide some solution.
Re:Ask HN: Starting over after business failure on Monday March 16, 2020 @05:20PM (#22597998)
YMMV. Some companies will not hire people that they feel are too entrepreneurial. Sitting in a cubicle and being happy is a much different mindset for someone who has run their own business before.
What's the difference between a cigarette butt and a plastic straw? The government makes no money off straws.
I know another construct that has this structure: the brain.

This article says 1.5% of Japanese males are hermits [1] which shows the desolation that faces the Japanese young. This article [2] outlines the declining marriage rates.

In my opinion, somewhat due to the breakdown of the nuclear family.
Tires burst, kids run out in traffic, human drivers make mistakes, bad weather happens...
