Is this wrong? Am I misunderstanding anything? I'm genuinely curious.
I love how it says everywhere to "buy" a TLD when it's really renting or leasing. It's not like it's a one time payment and then you own it.

Depending on what they'll decide to do, I can clearly see this becoming a situation that many will consider unfair.

I wasn't even aware of the 'libresignal/f-droid vs signal "controversy"', thanks for sharing.

> Compared to SMS yes.

Unencrypting messengers, for sure. I was also thinking of messaging client that encrypt but aren't open source (e.g. WhatsApp) and clients that don't encrypt messages consistently (Telegram).

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. It opened up another "level" for me of considerations to think about. I agree that a federated system are the next step in the right direction. For now I'll just enjoy for a while having completely removed myself (and some from my social circle) from the Facebook ecosystem.

We had difficulties "finding" each other. Even when sharing invites to groups, entering the group would fail.

I didn't set up my own server though, that was through matrix.org. And probably an intermittent issue.

That video explains the setup very well if one is inclined to run their own server. Thanks for sharing.

Maybe someday the apps that implement open protocols and decentralization are user friendly enough to allow non tech people to use them to talk to each other and share baby photos.

We've tried Matrix in our friend group and it was impossible for us to get it to work. And that was with a non self hosted identity provider.

Signal isn't perfect but it seems to offer better privacy and is trivial to set up.

Oh my. Who in their right mind would install that?!

I just setup pihole today because it's so difficult to avoid being spied on wherever you go.

For anyone else unfamiliar with CNAME cloaking, here's what I think is a much better explanation of the issue: https://webkit.org/blog/11338/cname-cloaking-and-bounce-trac...

Maybe I just didn't find the studies but I wish we knew more about the benefits of breastmilk and the act of breastfeeding (e.g. social, hormonal) and the benefits/downsides of formula.

I have this subjective feeling about one clearly being better than the other in so many ways but it's nothing rooted in facts. All the information I can find on the internet don't seem trustworthy mainly because it's so difficult to control for the socio-economic realities around who breastfeeds and who feeds formula. Plus I suppose it's difficult to do a blind trial at least when it comes to breastfeeding vs bottle feeding.

> pumping works out great for everyone

You might want to ask a few (other) women about that. My partner very much dislikes pumping. Both the physical aspect as well as the emotional/psychological side of it. But I get what you're saying and I agree with the sentiment.

Re:Female Founder Secrets: Fertility on Thursday March 04, 2021 @01:04PM (#26345795)
I'm currently working in my home office while my partner is looking after our newborn full time and I'm jealous as hell. I genuinely with I could stay at home longer than just a couple of weeks/a few months and be a full time stay at home parent. Unfortunately it doesn't work for us financially but I wish it did.
Re:Female Founder Secrets: Fertility on Thursday March 04, 2021 @01:01PM (#26345731)
There are societies where a woman can have both, a career and a family. And that usually comes with maternity leave, parental leave, child benefits, child care, etc.

I hope I don't misunderstand you but what you said sounded to me like it's either or, and I don't think that has to be true.

Re:Female Founder Secrets: Fertility on Thursday March 04, 2021 @12:57PM (#26345664)
I feel the same way. So often we optimize for situations that many of us feel shouldn't exist in the first place.
And then there are fakes of brand name products which makes it difficult to even know what you're buying. Personally I started buying things that I used to buy at Amazon locally instead whenever and wherever possible. That might mean a trip to the store but better than not knowing what you get.

Idk but that's what the article did
Re:GDPR – No reject option – what to do? on Monday March 01, 2021 @01:06PM (#26305873)
I love how it says "Learn more and customize" but doesn't actually let you customize anything. Just shows you dozens of links where you can supposedly "Opt out" by going to the target directly.
We're not even talking about "that dream of working for 200k/yr" but the dream of living a decent life
Re:Creating Serendipity with Python on Saturday February 27, 2021 @10:54PM (#26290537)
Correcte if I'm wrong but the post was about determining the number of groups and their size, not actually assigning people to them.
Re:Creating Serendipity with Python on Saturday February 27, 2021 @10:52PM (#26290524)
I understood it to be a way to help employees feel connected to their coworkers in a way similar to what would happen naturally in an office setting. Many of us struggle with this.
> Taxes imposed by a government are compulsory.

You can opt out by moving out of the country. /s

In that sense, I don't think you can opt out of the "Apple tax" because there are exactly 2 platforms both of which you have to be present on, otherwise you're not gonna reach your users.

> small retail sellers will find it hard to advertise and won't be able to compete with big ad spenders that use more wholesale ad strategies

I wonder how much of an issue this is in the real world, i.e. outside of the valley or where ever people change their buying behavior based on targeted advertising. I buy peanut butter when I need peanut butter and not based on any kind of advertising. I'm running low on socks, I'll go buy socks wherever I bought socks last time. Why would I buy something just because an algorithm shows it to me, that idea is so weird to me. I wonder if I'm the exception or if I'm missing something.

Re:The unusual ways Western parents raise children on Thursday February 25, 2021 @12:11AM (#26259923)
Many countries other than the US have figured it out, maybe something to aspire.
Re:The unusual ways Western parents raise children on Thursday February 25, 2021 @12:09AM (#26259921)
In many societies, organizations, families, the parents can. I'm so glad where we live we have access to governmental maternal and parental leave options and we're able to make it work financially.

Did you make up you own process or did you follow a certain technique? Could you share a few details?
Re:Changes to LastPass Free on Tuesday February 16, 2021 @12:12PM (#26156137)
I was a happy user of that workflow until I started working for an organization that blocked Dropbox but not any of the browser plugin based password managers.

Also while free, arguably the UX is not very good especially on mobile, unless Keepass integrates the way Lastpass, 1Password, et al do. I cannot imagine convincing any of my non-tech friends to go this route.

Cleanshot lools great. Baffles me though that Windows comes with great screenshot tool and MacOS doesn't.
> And Signal specifically works like a red flag for monitoring software- this user has something to hide!

Less accurate though with every new user.

Stupid thing I know but I liked the per chat configurable backgrounds in WhatsApp.
