News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

It does matter as guns are obviously far more deadly than the others
I've been on El Cap for 4 days. You get used to the exposure and you're usually too tired to do anything but sleep when you aren't climbing.
I'm curious about the steps taken actually. Are you approved in the State of California by the state board as a fuel delivery/transportation company? Do you intend to go to court if not?

The safety issues of this seem far too high to ignore.

What happens the first time something catches on fire? Will they fill up inside of a parking garage? What about a home garage?

How do leaks get handled, small and large?

Re:Dark Patterns by the Boston Globe on Monday April 25, 2016 @02:11AM (#11562714)
I absolutely hate the dark pattern of fully controlling your subscription online, including changing it to a different service, but canceling requires a phone call during very specific business hours where you are very likely to forget.

It's disgusting and way too many companies are utilizing these tactics rather than building a solid business model.

More companies that are doing this should be called out. Ive seen naturebox, justfab and others just to name a few.

The plastic bag ban was one of a handful of regulations that made a HUGE difference to the health of the bay's ecosystem. Paper will at least disintegrate over time in the bay's water. Plastic does not.

You should really look at the effect and reasoning of some of these regulations rather than handwaving them away as 'bad government regulation'

A 13,000 pound rated rope for a world record where some subset of 2300 people were pulling on it means there was only enough room for each person to generate between 5 and 25 (500 people) pounds each before the rope would snap. I would expect a heavy weight construction company to be able to handle basic math.
Re:Dear Googles: Stop asking on Sunday November 17, 2013 @02:24AM (#6747979)
Finally a reasonable response.
Re:Startup Culture is Not About Ping-Pong Tables on Wednesday July 17, 2013 @04:40PM (#6060101)
This reads like the exact sort of mission statement that is passed from HR and is defined as the company 'culture.'

Culture is something built from the top down and must be prevalent as an absolute deal breaker in each and every hiring decision.

What I mean by this is if you aren't asking the question 'Is this someone I want to work/have lunch with?' during the interview process then you are going to bring people in who won't be a proper fit. As a byproduct of this, there needs to be a decent amount of time just getting to know the person before hiring them where no interview questions are asked.

Re:Give them an inch and they take $773 million on Wednesday May 15, 2013 @02:08AM (#5710455)
It's 80% pre inch reduction (N Seats) and 80% post inch reduction (N + 6 Seats) which would average to an extra 4.8 seats per flight.
Re:Steve Jobs on Average vs Best Software Developers on Wednesday July 04, 2012 @12:15AM (#4197562)
A designer would probably be a bit more consistent with the vertical grid. For instance, the margins are inconsistent with the line height etc.
Re:nReduce: an alliance of hackers on Wednesday May 30, 2012 @08:48PM (#4045714)
For those of us bootstrapping while holding jobs, is it ok to not be full time for this as long as we are shipping?
Re:Scribd says: Beat our programmers at a coding challenge on Thursday May 24, 2012 @08:01PM (#4021227)
I'm pretty sure I was the guinea pig for this system and I have to say, it was one of the more enjoyable interview tasks I have had to perform.

There is just something extremely satisfying about watching your little robot run across a field collecting little fruit.

Re:Square Gets Approved for New York City Taxicab Pilot on Thursday March 01, 2012 @02:51PM (#3653705)
This is useless when every cab driver that picks you up will just claim the machine is broken. This is not even just me complaining. I believe the market is going to be difficult to break due to cabbie habits.
Re:Show HN: Our 4 hour winter break startup on Wednesday December 28, 2011 @04:12PM (#3401403)
This is not even a project, it's a shell of nothing. This is equivalent to building an entire blog around one seo phrase and writing junk so you can get money from adwords.
Re:Please Poach Me on Thursday November 17, 2011 @08:15PM (#3250057)
Blocking people like that would simply let people compare two lists and give you confirmation on who that person is from the discrepancy. That would be bad.
Re:The Number One Trait of a Great Developer on Friday November 04, 2011 @08:10PM (#3198312)
Two years? I think you can learn everything you ever needed to know about a language in a much shorter time period than that.
Re:JQuery 1.7 beta 1 released on Wednesday September 28, 2011 @07:09PM (#3050325)
On and Off is going to be great for future development. Especially when you can't guarantee how a dom element had events assigned to it.
Re:How to find a job for hackers on Monday September 19, 2011 @12:21PM (#3014125)
I don't think you need to actually get a hold of the person you want to talk to on the phone. Simply initiating contact like this outside of a job posting will show that you are extremely interested.
Re:HTC sues Apple over everything on Wednesday August 17, 2011 @01:29PM (#2896103)
I'm honestly afraid this is going to turn into another ridiculous partisan battle in congress that ends up with a terrible solution because of infighting.
It looks like google has reimplemented VB6 for javascript.
Re:Travel + Hackernews = Art Sumo on Wednesday May 04, 2011 @01:40PM (#2514595)
I can't find anything about the purpose of the site or what it is for outside of "hacker news and travel." If you want people to sign up, you should be a bit more convincing.
Re:Detroit is Dying… Quickly on Wednesday March 23, 2011 @03:58PM (#2361117)
I'm not sure. There are sparks happening right now in Detroit but it's going to take a lot more entrepreneurs and businesses than Slows to revitalize Detroit.

SE Michigan does have one of the highest rates of engineers in the country. It's great for manufacturing but Michigan needs more business sectors. As it stands, Ann Arbor is the only tech hub in the state and even then, plenty of talent is leaving for Silicon Valley.

Re:Reddit is hiring. We're looking for 3 rockstar programmers. on Friday February 11, 2011 @01:40PM (#2207585)
This is absolutely correct. The worst case in any binary search is exactly floor(lg n + 1) where the element doesn't exist. There is no reason to optimize any further than this.
The best thing you will get are the friendships and connections in the startup world. If you want to be in a startup, your best opportunities will come from bring in sf.
Re:Wall Street Battles Silicon Valley for Tech Geeks on Tuesday January 18, 2011 @12:33AM (#2114739)
Behind a pay wall so we can't read much...

The topic says it all though. It's true, Wall Street is on a hiring frenzy right now and they've started to realize how important good talent is.

It means they are going to have to start offering more to get the talent that typically dives off into silicon valley. NYC suits are also a hard sell to the t-shirt style of the west coast and that in itself may be a difficult obstacle.

Re:Which one will execute faster, if(flag==0) or if(0==flag)? on Friday January 07, 2011 @11:21PM (#2082183)
Honestly, this is like arguing tabs vs spaces.
Re:Quantifying The Value Of A College Degree (By Major) on Thursday January 06, 2011 @12:46AM (#2074210)
I think we're going to see the next generation of kids taking a much closer look at what they will be studying and the cost/benefits of those studies.

College tuition has gone up so much and people are in so much debt now that 2nd generation college students will likely have better advice from their parents.

All I ever got my whole life was, "go to school." Luckily I majored in engineering, but I know too many people with half a mortgage in student loans making $12/hour now.
