Re:Reddit will force everyone to log in on Thursday October 29, 2026 @04:51PM (#50295722)
It's a very bold strategy, Google could easily decide to stop promoting Reddit results so aggressively.

However, I don't see this working against scrapers- it feels like scraping Reddit through unauthorized commercial APIs has only gotten cheaper since they introduced the first restrictions.

Re:If IPv4 Were Land on Thursday October 29, 2026 @09:38AM (#50288841)
I don't think it's sarcasm, I didn't know this was a thing either! At first, I thought OP was writing about their mobile connection.

Some carriers in my country have recently started to share the same IP between 4 customers, each having a port range (1-16363, ...), but you can always request a full IP for free.

Re:Apple introduces the new 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @10:03AM (#50259542)
Are you sure? It is my understanding that Parallels is just a VM, like VMWare Fusion, and that there's no way to natively dual boot Windows on Apple Silicon.

Looks like you're right about Linux though, I didn't know about Asahi Linux. Thank you for sharing.

Re:Apple introduces the new 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @09:55AM (#50259397)
I recently snagged a really good deal on a Macbook (very nice hardware!), but the more I use it, the more I struggle with macOS (even though a few utilities can help bring some of Windows' features).

I used to be able to completely boot into Windows on my Intel mac a few years ago, but Apple no longer supports it for some reason. It's a shame, especially since the ARM64 version of Windows 11 has gotten very good now.

It would also be nice to be able to install Linux too. It's my own hardware, after all!

Re:Apple introduces the new 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @09:45AM (#50259242)
No, I just want to be able to boot into Windows 11. It worked really well on Intel macs.

Bring back Boot Camp and let us install Windows 11 on these, you cowards!
Same, I just checked and this week the vast majority of the bot traffic I get is random residential IPs that all pretend to be the exact same Chrome 155 on Linux.
Re:A farewell to Arc browser on Thursday October 22, 2026 @01:26PM (#50198406)
Yes, Dia has that "Arc feel", at least on macOS, it's very nice to use. Sadly, it still doesn't have all of Arc's features (I'll miss Boosts).
Re:A farewell to Arc browser on Thursday October 22, 2026 @01:22PM (#50198349)
It was based on a future "Arc for Teams" offering and a "Boosts" (= browsing personalizations) marketplace: https://youtu.be/eVda3zFLlhc?si=a7avuRAqq2KlvpG5&t=338
I think Facebook is fine? It's where most neighborhood/city groups seem to be, and it works as expected for this. Marketplace is also pretty good, with less scams than other similar platforms.
I really wouldn't want search engines to pay me to crawl my websites, why would you? The point of publishing stuff online is for people to access it.
Re:Ask HN: Are you hesitant to install vibe-coded apps? on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @12:56PM (#50090872)
At this point, I always ask my AI tool of choice to audit the Github before installing an open-source tool, so I'm not that concerned about security.

I'm mostly hesitant to install vibe-coded apps because they sadly tend to be shiny but quickly-abandoned slop, with tons of bugs or performance issues.

Is it SpokenFeeds?
I have tried a ton of stuff (Cloudflare, Anubis, fail2ban...) to combat the bots lately, but they all have their downsides, and users complained too much, so I just gave up. You simply can't win this arms race.

So I have resorted to performance improvements on my server and serving every single request. Things are way smoother now.

Tons of people click from ChatGPT! It's now the top referrer on most of my websites, and seems to be on path to overcoming Google soon (a ton of traffic from Google has vanished since the AI Overview rollout...).

The slides they show in the catering video demo are so bad (in addition to having all the usual signs of AI design), I would genuinely laugh if a supplier sent me this.

> Apple HomeView is not available for sale in the European Union, as Siri AI is currently unavailable in iOS in the EU. Apple is working constructively with the EU in an attempt to find a path forward.

It's interesting that they consider that this product would be unusable without Siri AI. I've used a Google Nest Hub for years, and I don't think it needs AI to be useful?

Re:Citroen revives the 2CV for an electric age on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @05:57AM (#50069234)
Yes, street parking in Paris is free for this car.

As someone who uses their Ami every day: it's too under-specced for me to recommend it (for example, no AC is tough in the summer), and it's cheaply made, but man, it's the best car I've every owned.

Re:Citroen revives the 2CV for an electric age on Monday October 12, 2026 @04:10PM (#50062276)
I'm not a high-schooler, but I love mine and use it almost every day in Paris! It's a great little car, and it's nice to see Citroën follow through with more "serious" small EVs.

Re:Keyboard differences between Windows and Macs on Friday October 09, 2026 @06:30AM (#50018538)
This is for a Macbook Neo, your mileage may vary: fn (globe) -> left_command gives you a Windows-like Ctrl key for most of your keyboard shortcuts. This works way better than changing it in the macOS settings.

You can then left_command -> right_option, then use that "right_option" key in Raycast (to get PowerToys Command Palette fonctionality) and in AltTab (Windows-like multitasking).

If you use Raycast, you can easily assign the Windows key+. to emojis and Windows key+V to the clipboard history, like on Windows. If you don't, you can also do it with the system tools in Karabiner.

Moving between words was probably the thing that frustrated me the most, because on Mac it uses Option instead of Command, for some reason. Cmd+Left/Right -> Option+Left/Right gives you Windows-like word jump. Cmd+Backspace -> Option+Backspace allows you to remove a word using the Ctrl+Backspace keys, like on Windows. Same thing with Cmd+DeleteForward -> Option+DeleteForward. Unlike DefaultKeyBinding.dict modifications, which people online tend to suggest, it works in all apps (including Electron ones).

In my Chromium browser (Edge), I like to remap Cmd+H -> Cmd+Y (history), Cmd+J -> Cmd+Option+L (downloads), and Cmd+Tab -> Ctrl+Tab (tab switching). I'm not sure why Chromium uses such vastly different shortcuts on the two platforms.

For the latter, that only apply when your browser is open, I suggest creating the "Complex Modifications" rules using AI, because formatting can be tricky.

Once set up, it's easy to transfer rules between computers by exporting your settings in Karabiner, so you only have to do it once.

I still think that, if you're switching permanently, it would be better to relearn everything, because these patches can make it confusing to learn new shortcuts. But it's been a lifesaver for me, since I switch between Windows and Mac every day.

Re:Keyboard differences between Windows and Macs on Friday October 09, 2026 @05:04AM (#50017959)
Same experience for me. I've ended up using Karabiner-Elements. With less than 10 rules (half of which are only for the browser), you can replicate the Windows layout on your Mac, it makes everything much easier.
