It will be interesting to benchmark the new Razer laptops against these new MacBook Pros. On paper the Razer will seemingly far outperform the MBP, at the same size, at actually cheaper cost. That being said, I'll wait for benchmarks to draw final conclusions.
Twitter… consider this: The 3rd-party experiences are simply better than your native ones, and not because of their lack of ads. Additionally, your own Tweetdeck and (seemingly abandoned) Twitter for Mac don't display ads.
Re:Orkut shutting down September 30 on Monday June 30, 2014 @08:53PM (#7968637)
I'm incredibly curious what this looks like— does it just display an empty state? "Oops we have no stories for you!" or similar?

Reliability and Monkey Brains is not something I'd put in the same sentence. It's a pretty regular occurrence for it to go down at our office, even after moving to a new space, several streets down.

On the Retina MacBook Pro

"Scrolling and animation tasks are jerky or just plain slow. I can’t deal with that in a new machine. Maybe in a year or two when it can drive its screen and a large external retina smoothly."

What? Has the author used one recently? These problems were fixed within a month of original release. I've been using one for over a year and love it.

HD over 3G/4G LTE cellular connection? The lag would in the order of a few seconds, which makes flying FPV extremely difficult. It also means a huge data bill unless I've been grandfathered into a "unlimited" data plan.

I think I'll just stick to some of the cheaper, well respected 5.8Ghz FPV setups.

Black text on a vibrant green background is not very readable, unfortunately.

At 15, I doubt he was more concerned about the data than the actual device.

fellat.io is also still available.
Correct.

I guess I'm not getting a Valentine this year.

Re:Facebook is impersonating users without their consent on Sunday January 20, 2013 @04:26PM (#5088316)
Correct, but this isn't obvious to everyone. This UI design seems purposefully chosen by Facebook to look as if the user has liked the post as well as the brand page.
Re:Facebook is impersonating users without their consent on Sunday January 20, 2013 @04:23PM (#5088300)
You and I may know that, as may the rest of the HN community, but it shouldn't stop us from trying to protect our friends and family who use Facebook unawares to these practices.

I know I don't want my mother thinking I liked a post about "2 Girls 1 Cup" – and my recourse shouldn't be to completely delete my Facebook account.

Re:Facebook is impersonating users without their consent on Sunday January 20, 2013 @04:19PM (#5088285)
Yes, the OP is specifically referring to "Sponsored Stories" – the concern and alarm is raised because the user has no way of knowing what stories are being attached to their name, or even that its happening at all.

As for your later point, your assumption that all users know these posts are advertisement and that users understand their friend didn't really like a post about 2 Girls 1 Cup – is patently false based on OP's own personal experience. His mother saw a Sponsored Story by VICE about "Penis Waffles" that had his name attached to it. When she saw the post, it looked to her as if he had liked the story/post and urged him to take it down.

Re:Facebook is impersonating users without their consent on Sunday January 20, 2013 @03:57PM (#5088198)
You've unfortunately missed the point. The "Johnny Wonny" user never 'liked' the article/post about 2 Girls 1 Cup. He merely like the VICE page. Facebook is now deciding to show the post to all his friends with his name attached, without any mention to Johnny in any form.
Re:Facebook is impersonating users without their consent on Sunday January 20, 2013 @03:55PM (#5088191)
Correct, but it is still a very valid concern.

The post from OP stemmed from such an "unsophisticated viewer," namely: his mother; she thought that he had liked an article about "Penis Waffles" that VICE posted some months ago, and she urged him to take the post down due to its vulgar nature.

Of course, he couldn't take the post down, and had no way of even KNOWING the post was being shown to his friends and family.

Re:Facebook is impersonating users without their consent on Sunday January 20, 2013 @03:53PM (#5088183)
The point the OP is trying to make is not the liking of VICE – the "Johnny Wonny" account legitimately liked VICE, but did not like the POST that VICE chose to "sponsor" and show to other users as if he had liked it. It becomes disingenuous when Facebook doesn't inform the user that they are posting a specific article/post on the users behalf, to all his friends.
Re:Should you use Yes/No or Ok/Cancel on your message boxes? on Sunday January 06, 2013 @09:38PM (#5018954)
My favorite anti-pattern to this is the following:

"Would you like to cancel this transaction?"

"OK" – "Cancel"

Re:Apple Killed the Netbook on Friday January 04, 2013 @03:14AM (#5006757)
I think the point you raise is valid, but the way you arrive to it is disingenuous.

North of $700? The iPad starts at $500, and recently, the iPad Mini at $330. Granted the Mini is late in this timeline, but it stands to reason the price point is closer than you're making it out to be.

Secondly, an "incomplete OS" is a fallacy. It's complete to the spec it was designed for. Yes, that means its not intended to be a fully-fledged desktop OS, but its not inherently incomplete, just focused.

Thirdly, "running two programs simultaneously" – I'd wager that many netbook users (myself included) found the netbook so limiting and simple that it was only ever used for doing one thing at a time, such as reading email, browsing the web, listening to music or reading a book; all of which now accomplished by the iPad.

Re:Bootleg.css - Twitter Bootstrap JS redone with CSS on Friday December 07, 2012 @05:05AM (#4886297)
Haha, it seems to have decided the content of "Example tabs" is the main article/content of the page.

Another player in this market may be VoiceBunny. They have similar pricing, faster turnaround time, much better recorded quality, but I'm not sure if their pool of talent will be as language diverse.
Re:Product Performances on Thursday November 08, 2012 @08:24PM (#4760804)
And you think programming/product design is unaffected by these disconnects?

What if a server crashes? What if Illustrator doesn't draw the exact like the hand performed?

There are physical and technological disconnects in much the same respect as a musical performance.

Re:Apple Said to Acquire Color on Wednesday October 17, 2012 @10:46PM (#4667253)
I've been a quiet fan of Color since the beginning, from a technology/team standpoint, not a product standpoint. I think its smart for Apple.

We can all agree that the product launch and the product itself was terribly implemented, but that doesn't mean the technology behind it can't be impressive. It also doesn't have to mean that Apple can't make good use of the technology and talent at Color by embedding them into existing teams and apps.
