I can recommend the DeArrow extension for this. It has an option to always show the untranslated title. Plus, it has the intended features such as thumbnail replacement and crowd-sourced titles. DeArrow works in Android Firefox.

It's unfortunate that YouTube is only usable with these extensions, but here we are.

My roasts are savage:

> Your 236-line 'simplified' code example suggests you might need to look up the definition of 'simplified' in a dictionary that's not written in Ruby.

OUCH

> You've spent so much time worrying about Facebook tracking you that you've failed to notice your dental nanobot fantasies are far more concerning to the rest of us.

Heard.

This doesn't look dirty or confusing to me at all.

I buy Motorola phones and they have been great in recent years. I consider them the new Android One. The OS is stock Android. Facebook and LinkedIn are preinstalled, but easily removed. The moto apps add useful gestures. The launcher is very much like the Pixel one, but also easily changed. It uses Google apps for everything, i.e. Gboard for the keyboard. The camera is great. Typing this on an edge 30.

Came here to say exactly this. Disabling watch history is gold.

Fedora
I'm in Europe, it's not blocked for me
I agree completely! I ditched Ubuntu for this very fact. GNOME and snaps are deal breakers for me. I switched to Fedora KDE a year ago and I use it every day. And not just for coding. It's a real treat and stuff just works and gets out of my way.

Auke-Florian is great. He's a talented presenter in addition to being a scientist. In The Netherlands, he is sometimes flown in for sciency sound bites on national television. Memorable hair, indeed. https://youtu.be/UgnK483jiDE

Gaggenau has this, we have the Vario 400 series. Physical buttons, crazy fast, reliable and beautiful. The downside: it cost us the same as a small second hand car...
Re:There's something off about LED bulbs on Thursday March 30, 2023 @09:32AM (#35372427)
Yes! This is fairly common. It usually happens when the power leads pick up a small amount of electricity via induction. You can place a compensator near the fixture to take care of it. (Basically a high voltage capacitor)
Re:Ask HN: How do you manage your digital footprint in 2023? on Monday February 27, 2023 @01:11PM (#34959865)
It's solid advice for sure, but I've been doing the opposite in recent years. Sign up for everything, confirm accounts, setup MFA if possible, and consistently use the account. Then, when I want to terminate the relationship, request permanent account deletion. (I'm in EU, so GDPR applies)

This way I can be reasonably sure they've tied all my activity to my singular account. Instead of my shipping address, IP etc being all over the place. When they don't have a delete account button, I request it via email. Seems to work fine. Obviously can't be sure it's actually gone, but that's okay. Ever since Adobe leaked my PII, it's out there anyway.

Yes, absolutely. I've felt 22-ish for most of my adult life, until midlife happened. That was a couple years ago, and I'm in the tail end of my midlife "crisis". Right now, at 47, I feel my age. Also, I'm totally okay with it.

Midlife crisis definitely happened for me, and might actually have been my internal age adjusting to my external one.

Makes me wonder if I'll feel 47 for the rest of my life...

This is great, nice find. I grew up with Uranium-based Fiestaware in the house, and I am looking at a radioactive red vase right now. My dad was a ceramics engineer and researcher. He wrote the book on red ceramic glazes (The Defiant Red), and there is a whole chapter on Uranium.
Re:Cosmic DE update: System76's new Linux desktop environment on Tuesday January 31, 2023 @05:07PM (#34602951)
I bought a NUC from them years ago that was always a bit wonky, but not unusable. Until one day I couldn't stand it any more and sent it back for repair. At that point I'd had it for well over a year, maybe more than two. It came back with a fixed controller and has worked flawlessly ever since. So, you pay for support. And the price difference is peanuts compared to all of our hourly rates.

Edited to add: the repair was free of charge.

Re:WTF with High School Questions? on Tuesday January 24, 2023 @01:48PM (#34508111)
I agree. This is a great filter for companies you do not want to be a part of. Keep in mind that your future bosses will evaluate you based on useless and silly metrics like these.

There are a great many other places to work that DO value your actual accomplishments.

I had one twenty years ago, a Java Ring. Apparently they are still being made today.
> I'm pretty sure almost everyone who does drugs does so to get high.

This is not the case. I know people who use them to manage chronic pain. It's not all that different from getting a Vicodin prescription, but without shifting most of the cost to society.

Thank you! :)

We're not embarrassed, and the_duke's comment is spot on. It's not a secret we're built on Pageflow and I am the #5 overall contributor to it. We exist thanks to Pageflow and will do everything to promote it. We've referred many leads to pageflow.io. There's plenty of room for both models to happily exist!
Re:Dear Al-Jazeera: thank you for doing the right thing on Tuesday September 20, 2016 @03:22PM (#12542468)
The value we add is not in the software we use. Far from it. RedHat does just fine too, even if you can download the distribution for free. There's room for both models.

Besides, it's far from a secret that we're standing on the shoulders of Pageflow. It's on our homepage, and we have a good relationship with them. We are overall #5 contributor to Pageflow: https://github.com/codevise/pageflow/graphs/contributors

Al-Jazeera had been using Pageflow for a long time and it's great that they continue doing so. This outcome is perfect as far as we are concerned!

Re:Dear Al-Jazeera: Why Steal Our Code? on Sunday September 18, 2016 @02:42PM (#12526533)
I've thought about this but that does not move the discourse forward at all and it hurts the readers of the story. We're not here to make anyone upset, least of all readers of the story. We'd just like Al-Jazeera to not leech off our bandwidth bill. And if they want to come on board, that's awesome. Still welcome.
Re:Dear Al-Jazeera: Why Steal Our Code? on Sunday September 18, 2016 @02:41PM (#12526526)
They do have a documented procedure for this, posted on http://america.aljazeera.com/tools/terms.html - paragraph (V)(B). It likely does not apply to Al-Jazeera worldwide, though.
Re:Dear Al-Jazeera: Why Steal Our Code? on Sunday September 18, 2016 @02:38PM (#12526509)
That's fine, I posted the story expecting exactly that. And to be fair our original post missed details that needed clarification. Always a tough choice between a short, shareable story and a longer, complete one. People have all the right to doubt our claims, and I hope I've been able to post sensible replies.
Re:Dear Al-Jazeera: Why Steal Our Code? on Sunday September 18, 2016 @02:31PM (#12526467)
Thank you! I also didn't see the DMCA takedown as especially angry or hostile. It's the established way to (try to) take down infringing content, not a lot of room for emotion that I see. For a person it's quite something to receive one, for a business with a large online presence not so much I think.
Re:Dear Al-Jazeera: Why Steal Our Code? on Sunday September 18, 2016 @02:29PM (#12526445)
We've given serious thought to this issue but it really does not seem to have been the case. All our contacts have behaved ethically, unless they're lying to our faces, which I find very hard to believe. It seems to have been a rogue developer at AJ who chose to ignore established practices, and is now being kept out of harm's way (while unfortunately leaving the situation to exist). As far as escalating--well that can never end well, can it? I'd be okay (not happy, just okay) if they just took it down or moved all remaining assets over from us to them, so that it's no longer costing us out of pocket.
Re:Dear Al-Jazeera: Why Steal Our Code? on Sunday September 18, 2016 @10:56AM (#12525544)
It's worth noting that we didn't barge in with the DMCA, so I updated the blog post to reflect that. Besides, nothing wrong with a DMCA. It's a valid, and expected way to take down infringing content. Which Al-Jazeera chose to ignore.

We're not treating them as a sales lead. What they did is not a great start to a fruitful relationship. We just would like them to take down the infringing code and at the very least stop using our bandwidth for their stories. It's kind of ridiculous.

As you say, we're small. So when a large bully steals from us, that makes it okay? I really don't understand. People go to jail for copyright infringement but when Al-Jazeera does it to a small startup nobody bats an eye. We chose to speak up after it was clear that Al-Jazeera would keep ignoring our friendly requests and formal demands.
