In my team we called it the "Scunthorpe problem". Scunthorpe is a town in northern England.
This reminds me of something I recently saw on Netflix. In the documentary about physicist Abdus Salam, he sent Wolfgang Pauli a paper on parity violations. Pauli replied saying something like "find something better to do".

Later, two Chinese physicist went on to get the Nobel Prize for that same theory. Pauli later apologised.

Ericsson said last week that "an initial root cause analysis" had indicated that the "main issue was an expired certificate in the software versions installed with these customers".

I was confused for a bit..I thought hang on "Prometheus" ( https://prometheus.io) is a time series data base, how can it support genetic data. Turns out you probably meant Promethease (https://promethease.com)
One problem I have with pan-spermia is: Why is there only one tree of life? Not several independent trees. If life evolved in one of the exo-planets, is not possible that several independent forms of life evolved in several planets and some ended up on Earth.

Not accessible from within the UK..

We're sorry but this site is not accessible from the UK as it is part of our international service and is not funded by the licence fee. It is run commercially by BBC Worldwide, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the BBC, the profits made from it go back to BBC programme-makers to help fund great new BBC programmes. You can find out more about BBC Worldwide and its digital activities at www.bbcworldwide.com.

Maybe in the US, this is not the case in Europe.

I've been having these issues in the past week or so. I thought it was just my battery that was dying!

I though this was about the Hive taking over the moon.

No weight information? Just search for Mango and it just said 135 kcal without any indication of what the weight or size of the mango was.

Reading the comments, is anyone else bothered by this reply from a Blackblaze representative:

"Right now, Backblaze has only one datacenter, so the short answer is "no". :-)

The longer answer is that for online backup, there is one copy of your data on your laptop, and another copy in the Backblaze datacenter in Sacramento. If a meteor hits our datacenter in Sacramento pulverizing it into atoms, you STILL would not lose one single file, not one - because your laptop is still running just fine where ever you are with your copy of the data. In the case that occurs, we will alert our users they should make another backup of their data."

There are a million one things other than a comet strike that can go wrong in a data centre. I would not trust a backup provider that does not replicate my data across at least two data centers.

What are you talking about? It says "Ultra HD" in the description, which is the marketing name for 4K

Re:Getting a SIM card in India on Monday December 23, 2013 @08:43AM (#6954167)
> First off, to get a SIM card as a foreigner in India, you need to have a copy of your passport and visa, a passport sized photo, and a local to act as a reference

Except the local reference part, you go through a similar procedure in Saudi Arabia... in fact.. you need to supply your Iqama (work permit) or passport number over the phone every time you need to topup your SIM. All this in the name of curbing "terrorism"

Re:Flickr gets new UI, new Android app, 1 TB free space on Tuesday May 21, 2013 @04:41AM (#5742491)
1 TB free space is meaningless for me, unless they allow the upload of RAW files. As a hobbyist photographer, I avoid JPEG like a plague and store keep all my images in NEF (Nikon RAW) format.
Re:Debate HN: Is Bitcoin a currency or a commodity? on Thursday April 18, 2013 @10:04AM (#5570626)
I think thats an interesting perspective. Just as gold is a finite quantity so will Bitcoin be a finite quantity when it reaches 21Mil coins.

I can imagine that in future Bitcoins can be used as a "reserve" currency that backs another currency

Re:Be careful where you brainstorm domain names on Thursday April 18, 2013 @08:47AM (#5570269)
Why not point out the offending services? This reads more like an ad for an app
But I use Google apps on a personal domain, so I am "kind of" using gmail as my primary email.

Re:Most popular JVM memory configurations on Tuesday March 26, 2013 @08:53AM (#5442864)
I concur! Claiming that Java is not "as memory intensive as thought" means to me that they compared the memory usage profile of java applications with similar applications developed in other languages.
I don't understand what this furore about the lack of public transportation in the new Maps app is about? The fact is, outside the US public transportation was never part of the Google Maps app.

I'm in the UK and have to do with dedicated apps, like National Rail Enquiries and NextBuses. So for me, literally nothing changed.
