Thank you very much. It seems very useful.

The problem is not blocking the ads. I already do that. The problem is how to prevent YouTube recognizing my extension as an ad blocker
Re:How to bypass YouTube ad-blocking restrictions? on Friday December 19, 2025 @05:57AM (#46324419)
The problem is that I own an extension that blocks ads and is detected as an ad blocker. So, I am looking for a technical solution on how to prevent YouTube from detecting my extension as an ad blocker.
Re:How to bypass YouTube ad-blocking restrictions? on Friday December 19, 2025 @05:55AM (#46324408)
So, you stopped blocking ads and muted them instead?
Re:How to bypass YouTube ad-blocking restrictions? on Friday December 19, 2025 @05:08AM (#46324124)
I got the same answer from a friend of mine :) That's good for my but it does not help with my extension. I cannot tell the users go and use Brave. I am trying to find a way to avoid my extension being detected as an ad blocker

How to bypass YouTube ad-blocking restrictions?

Today was the first time YouTube showed me the message “Ad blockers are not allowed”. I am trying to find a way to bypass YouTube’s ad-blocking restrictions. This is partly for personal use, but I also have a browser extension that improves the YouTube experience and, among other things, blocks ads. How can I avoid my extension being recognized as an ad-blocker from YouTube? Some users have...

Re:My Extension Featured on Chrome Web Store Homepage on Friday October 25, 2024 @02:29AM (#41942757)
After 5 years, my extension Music Mode for YouTube™ had only 20,000 users. But in early September, it was featured on the Chrome Web Store homepage under "For music lovers" section, bringing in 10,000 new users in a month and driving a huge increase in daily installs!

Music Mode for YouTube™ is an extension both for Chromium and Firefox browsers that its main functionality is to block the video and play only the audio on YouTube Music and YouTube for mobiles. Unfortunately, on YouTube, video and audio are now combined in a single file, so the extension can only hide the video rather than blocking it entirely.

Show HN: Extension that plays only the audio, blocking the video, on YouTube

https://github.com/Thunderarea/music-mode-for-youtube

I have made a browser extension that plays only the audio, blocking the video on YouTube, YouTube Music and all embedded YouTube videos in third party sites. It can also hide the thumbnails and avatars and skip the ads. It is compatible with Chrome, most of the Chromium browsers and Firefox. Additionally, it can be installed in smartphones using the Kiwi browser that supports extensions from...

I think that you know that it does not work. First of all you don't declare what language it explains. Secondly, I tried the most simple example in the web app: to set a value to a variable. I tried "int i = 0;" and "var i = 0" and both return explanations for things that I have not written. Please, create first something that works and then try to promote it
Re:Play audio only on YouTube and save bandwidth on Saturday February 05, 2022 @06:30AM (#30220119)
There are two extensions in Firefox neither of which blocks the video. Music Mode for YouTube™ is the only extension that blocks the video entirely until now. These two extensions are Youtube Audio (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/youtube-audio...) and Audio Only for YouTube™ (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/audio-only-fo...). The second one is better and the one that recommend. Both have bugs and they do not block the video but they are better from nothing. I plan to create a version of Music Mode for YouTube™ for Firefox but, you know, it is difficult to spend a lot of time for things that you earn nothing.
Very beautiful

Music Mode for YouTube is the only browser extension that blocks the video. All the other extensions they don't use the video but the video is downloaded. You can check this in the dev tools and specifically in the network panel where you can see all the files that are downloaded (or not)
Re:Play audio only on YouTube and save bandwidth on Friday February 04, 2022 @04:05PM (#30213196)
5 seconds is a lot of time. This shows that it has to load the video
Re:Play audio only on YouTube and save bandwidth on Friday February 04, 2022 @10:37AM (#30208123)
As it says it does not load the video. But it downloads it. This file is from the Audio only YouTube extension

Ha ha ha. I think that they know them. But in desktop there are many ways to change it with extensions or even browsers other than Chrome. So they don't give it a try
Re:Play audio only on YouTube and save bandwidth on Friday February 04, 2022 @09:52AM (#30207448)
It could. But it does not do it :)
Re:Play audio only on YouTube and save bandwidth on Friday February 04, 2022 @09:35AM (#30207208)
Now that I know that there is the Show HN I will post it also there
Re:Play audio only on YouTube and save bandwidth on Friday February 04, 2022 @09:20AM (#30207025)
You have a point on this
Re:Play audio only on YouTube and save bandwidth on Friday February 04, 2022 @09:12AM (#30206945)
If so I think that is not an easy way to listen to music on YouTube if you have every time to download the song
Re:Play audio only on YouTube and save bandwidth on Friday February 04, 2022 @08:56AM (#30206789)
You cannot play with a chapter of a book but it is acceptable. So, the "play" does not used with its exact meaning
Re:Play audio only on YouTube and save bandwidth on Friday February 04, 2022 @08:55AM (#30206773)
"play" in this case does not imply that the product should be game or something like that but something that the user can interact with. From the Show HN rules: "On topic: things people can run on their computers or hold in their hands. For hardware, you can post a video or detailed article. For books, a sample chapter is ok"

Thanks a lot graderjs. I don't know very well Hacker News. After I made this post I discovered the Show HN. I prepare a post for it. Thanks
Re:Play audio only on YouTube and save bandwidth on Friday February 04, 2022 @08:38AM (#30206606)
Yes. But they give you the API. This is the policy for the API. You can modify the files as you say but not using their API. You must find the way...
Re:Play audio only on YouTube and save bandwidth on Friday February 04, 2022 @08:28AM (#30206506)
No. The extension is not fake. It changes the video source with the audio file URL but it does not blocks the video. The video file is downloaded but it is never used. That's what I said
Re:Play audio only on YouTube and save bandwidth on Friday February 04, 2022 @08:23AM (#30206456)
Is this a command in order to download the audio?
Re:Play audio only on YouTube and save bandwidth on Friday February 04, 2022 @08:15AM (#30206387)
But it is a good alternative for Firefox since Music Mode for YouTube is currently only for Chrome
Re:Play audio only on YouTube and save bandwidth on Friday February 04, 2022 @08:13AM (#30206363)
sure
Re:Play audio only on YouTube and save bandwidth on Friday February 04, 2022 @08:03AM (#30206274)
You can check in the dev tools that when you use audio only extension the video files are downloaded normally. So, it does not save so much bandwidth
Re:Play audio only on YouTube and save bandwidth on Friday February 04, 2022 @07:56AM (#30206201)
Sorry but it does not do the same. It does not block the video. The video is downloaded but it does not used
