News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

Plenty of companies use retail/wholesale pricing internally to make sure a business unit doesn’t appear profitable just because it’s being subsidized by the one providing the resources. Plenty also have to have arm’s length pricing for legal reasons.

Anthropic isn’t booking it as GAAP revenue, they’re just using the number for marketing.

> At the same time before we go idealizing that system, what Western folks often see are the best of the best examples. Individuals who went to great schools, emigrated and excelled in the West. They may have gone to better schools, with better teachers, or had parents who cared more etc. They don't see a representative sample.

That’s a bingo. Most people meet the Russians who escaped during the post-Soviet brain drain, they don’t meet the people who stayed behind. Many of whom became gangsters and turned the country onto anarchy. They were products of the Soviet education system as much as anyone.

It’s easy to get disoriented and accidentally accelerate into the ground, yes, (which is basically the procedure in a stall to get lift back anyway) but based on the ATC recording they knew what was going on and just dropped out of the sky.
If you’re going to make snarky vacuous comments, it’d help to get your biology right. Sargassum is algae, not a plant.

A trash can.
> What is stopping the court from fining people for a "logical argument" in future filings?

The higher court that handles appeals.

That’s the generic answer to “what is stopping the court from…” in a functional judicial system.

One man’s hacker is another man’s sexual freedom fighter.

I wonder how this goes over in conservative countries like Egypt. Is it a scandal of some sort with ample pearl clutching or is it mostly a non-event?

An extradition treaty is just a formalized process for extradition, it doesn’t prevent countries from extraditing someone when they want to. China doesn’t extradite Chinese nationals as a matter of principle, but they’ll extradite other people to the US if it’s politically expedient.
It’s not all bad. When I was there, the Washington campus had a restaurant with a three course menu for $15, designed by a Seattle celebrity chef.
Re:5-MeO-DMT sometimes cancels the Ebbinghaus illusion on Friday October 30, 2026 @11:26AM (#50305260)
I misremembered! It was 4-AcO-DMT not 5-MeO [1].

Some family recently visited from out of state and we went to Venice Beach, where there is now tons of stores selling “magic mushrooms” along the boardwalk.

To my knowledge shrooms haven’t been legalized in California so I was curious what they sold (but not enough to try it). Turns out California state regulators have been surreptitiously testing the product from time to time and most of it is 5-MeO-DMT… and they don’t do anything about it despite being schedule I.

Venice Beach, leading the way in “medical” research!

Re:Artificial Analysis v5 and the benchmarker's dilemma on Friday October 30, 2026 @10:09AM (#50304142)
I’ve been burned by this so many times that I’ve pretty much given up on open models for general use.
> This seems like sloppy reasoning. If a person's rights are being violated, they ought to be able to make that argument in court without reference to disparate impact.

Where does that leave the equal protection clause?

Re:DoorDash to Acquire Instacart on Thursday October 29, 2026 @02:32PM (#50293783)
Yeah that’s what everyone says, but no one wants to pay for it. That’s why California voted for Prop 22 instead of our courts forcing the rideshare companies to treat their drivers as employees.
Re:DoorDash to Acquire Instacart on Thursday October 29, 2026 @02:01PM (#50293294)
My nephew is currently doing UE/DD/Instacart to make ends meet and if their experience is reflective, most of their customers deserve shitty service. I helped them write some scripts to analyze data from Gridwise (delivery+mileage tracking app) and the tips average around 3-5% of the gross. Even in California with Prop 22, that's not going to add up to a livable wage.

Don't be surprised when the permanent underclass you depend on doesn't give a shit about your moldy strawberries.

There’s a special carveout in the law. As long as they’re only selling donated items, they can remain tax exempt (or to be precise, that income is not counted as “unrelated business income” so they can keep it under the nonprofit).

I have several difficult projects that are very amenable to the whole automated agent swarm nonsense.
This is (still) happening to three of my four 20x Max accounts and by all accounts it seems they’re getting short changed on total weekly quota.

They’ve got that IPO coming up so they’re turning up the fraud in preparation.

Re:Two high-speed trains collide near Toledo, Spain on Thursday October 29, 2026 @01:24AM (#50284875)
The train in Spain derails mostly on the plain.
The assembly is almost all automated with pick and places machines and the board fabrication is mostly chemistry. The problem is changing tooling between each run: PNPs need their feeders changed to the right parts for each board and there’s limited space for them so they all have to be changed for every design that runs through. Same with the tooling for the board etching. This stuff is precision equipment and has to be properly aligned so it’s not just a simple matter of plugging and unplugging some parts.
> CaseCite is a _source-available_, self-hosted legal RAG caselaw research & document analysis platform.

Source-available is not open source.

Same repos, same workflows.

Besides, how would workflows impact how much weekly quota 100% of a five hour quota uses? One account can fit more than six maxed out five hour sessions, the rest only three.

Something is fundamentally different between them, regardless of workflow.

Ask HN: What shenanigans is Anthropic pulling with Claude subs this time?

Trying to get actual support from Anthropic is worse than Google so I guess I have to go here in the hopes that someone from Anthropic would read it:I have several 20x Max subscriptions. I have no way to measure total token usage because most of my sessions are cloud session but they’ve been using the same automated workflow across similar projects. One account, which was subscribed most...

Which is really curious. Shortly after the printing press was invented, grammar books were one of the most popular genres as people learned to read but it took centuries more for languages to get standardized and nearly four hundred years for dictionaries to appear.
Many of us can do it on just our hacker news comments (been there, done that).
Re:2026 is an exciting year for the Rust compiler (and me) on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @12:28PM (#50168852)
> It's easy to understate how big of a deal this is for the compiler. This work resolves a major piece of technical debt that a lot of compiler developers dreamed about for years.

No kidding. I’ve been waiting for the solver at least half that decade now. Hopefully it and Polonius unblock specialization which has been in purgatory for years.

I recommend reading accounts of traveling through the Amazon, like The Lost City of Z. The number of pests in rainforests that do horrifying things to the human body is astounding and the botflies are only one of them. Makes me thankful for modern conveniences like pure DEET.
Re:Show HN: Unfenced – Land for sale that borders public land on Thursday October 15, 2026 @06:45PM (#50111436)
That ship has sailed. We’ve been spraying Bacillus thuringiensis as an agricultural pesticide for a century now, at a massive scale, and that scale probably pales in comparison to how prevalent the organism is worldwide naturally.
Re:AI is a tool and using it well takes skill on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @08:24AM (#50086591)
Programmers can’t even agree on tabs vs spaces, less alone something important like strict vs weak typing. That survey is going to be a mess, even if you limited it to the most senior engineers. About the only thing we’ll be able to agree on is “source control good”.
Re:What agents mean for Rust (and vice versa) on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @08:08AM (#50086397)
It’s especially bad when working on multiple projects at the same time. Memory and CPU contention kills performance.

I’ve switched one of my projects to Go and it took a day for Opus to do the port and another couple of days to finish the features I wanted.
