Diversity, culture differences. It has benefits but it also comes with a few challenges. I work in the Bay Area and here people are coming from all over the world. We ultimately see different cultures and styles interacting with each other. Some people come from places where you have to be extremely competitive in order to get the basic things such as education and a job. Especially when you have a billion people in your own country and everyone is trying to work in CS. Or, if your parents are trying to make you the number one. Telling you that being number two is not an option for you.

Ask HN: Can I hide an employer when applying for a job?

I joined a company a month ago and I'm currently applying for a new job since I'm not happy at all. I've been in for only a month and was wondering if I could simply bypass this experience when applying to other companies without getting into any troubles? I just want to make it simpler and smoother.Would a company find out about that experience when they'd start their onboarding process?

I'd like to thanks everyone who participated in this thread. Very good stuff. It looks like I'm gonna have to highlight my personality to make sure it's inline with an engineering manager role. Since it's the only thing I have on top of a strong tech background and mentorship. Interestingly, I also have a little bit of product management experience. But really it looks like it will be about my ability to make all my interviewers feel like home.

cheers!

Ask HN: How to prepare for an Engineering Manager interview?

I have 10 years of experience as a software engineer with various roles as a lead engineer. I have never managed anyone directly - nor hired/fired anyone. I recently applied for a manager role at a great company (not a big-5). To my surprise, they're interested in my profile and would like to start the interview process. My goal is to grow in those areas and gain a new set of skills. This role...

Ask HN: How can I avoid whiteboarding interview questions?

Are there any tech companies that don't do whiteboarding interview questions? I'm looking for a Sr. Engineer role and most of the companies in san francisco bay area seem to focus mainly on writing perfect but meaningless functions on a whiteboard as fast as possible. I have +10y or experience and would like to leverage that for my next gig beyond just recruiters. Not necessarily looking for a...

For my own use. In case I want to apply for a new job, I'll try to avoid white boarding stuff.

Ask HN: Which companies don't ask whiteboard questions?

I'm trying to set up a list of companies that don't ask whiteboard questions during a technical interview. More like a coding assignment or design questions, etc. In other words, a company that values work experience over academic stuff during the interview process for a Senior Software Engineer. Thanks!

Ask HN: How do you reimburse a signing bonus?

I'm planning on leaving my job after a month in. It didn't work as expected unfortunately. The company gave me a signing bonus of $10K, which I will have to be reimburse if I leave during the first year (prorated). My question is - do I have to reimburse the gross amount or the net amount after tax?
