Re:12 Months to 7k Monthly Revenue on Thursday November 21, 2013 @11:41AM (#6775632)
Why did this post disappear so quickly from the front page?

It's very on-topic, and used to be HN's sweet spot.

You just weren't meant for each other!
Re:On Go’s Web Application Ecosystem on Wednesday November 20, 2013 @10:41AM (#6768623)
I had searched for it to see what kind of feedback it was getting but came up empty:

https://groups.google.com/forum/#!searchin/golang-nuts/marti...

The Revel comment was more about a criticism I've read several times now.

I liked and bookmarked the article. :)

Re:On Go’s Web Application Ecosystem on Wednesday November 20, 2013 @10:12AM (#6768413)
This article seems to be pushing Martini, which at first glance looks interesting (though it doesn't appear to have been mentioned on the mailing list even once, so there may be some boosting involved).

There is Revel, but it seems to be getting a bad rap ("non-idiomatic" label used as a stick).

Re:Securing Single Page Apps and REST Services on Tuesday November 19, 2013 @09:59PM (#6766040)
I believe the scheme is still generating the token server-side, no?

"The server validates the login information and creates an authentication token for the user"

Re:Securing Single Page Apps and REST Services on Tuesday November 19, 2013 @01:20PM (#6763183)
I'm not the author, I'm just curious what people think of this approach. Does it sound reasonable?
Check the mailing list for this. There wasn't a large amount of discussion about mobile options when I last checked, but one solution seems to be what you've already listed above: Phonegap/Cordova.

https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/meteor-talk

It didn't seem like there's a "perfect" solution for this yet (in any realm--it's all still evolving).

Re:Ask HN: How do you say 'no'? on Sunday November 17, 2013 @01:14PM (#6750012)
My suggestion is to simply tell the complete and honest truth, in a kind and caring manner (if you value the friendship, you could let him know that).

Every choice has a cost.

I think we're talking sneakernet here...
Re:Stop Freelancing on Wednesday November 13, 2013 @02:46PM (#6727921)
Cheating a bit since I didn't read the article, but having been in and out of that world for a number of years, there were always certain types of clients who didn't want to hire a company--they only wanted to deal with individuals, for reasons stated or unstated.
Re:How I Ate No Food for 30 Days on Tuesday November 12, 2013 @03:12PM (#6720612)
From a different perspective, has anyone ever taken the time to read local health department restaurant inspection reports (if available)?

I assume most people here eat at restaurants without too much concern, but if you ever read the reports, you'll find experienced industry professionals cited for far worse infractions than these.

Re:Why all this hatred to MongoDB? on Tuesday November 12, 2013 @08:37AM (#6717688)
And yet I see a lot of job ads listing MongoDB.

If I went into an interview and asked why they chose a document-oriented database, and that one in particular, think I'd be popular? (I like to play with new techologies, too, but it seems odd to see it mentioned as a requirement.)

Have you tried any of the freelance sites (oDesk, Elance, Guru, etc.)?

My two concerns would be the rate and the amount of time it takes to become somewhat established on these sites, but I believe some flexibility on the rate--which wouldn't seem unreasonable given the situation you describe--could help there (and my understanding is that some developers can raise their rates there to something approaching professional levels, with experience).

Walmarts and hospitals--I'm going to file this new information away, just in case (you never know where life will take you).
This was the original thread (I think my post led to this one, which split the responses):

Any particular cost? I've read mixed reviews before (possibly here).
Re:Ask HN: Where can I move cheaply to work by myself for a year? on Saturday November 09, 2013 @11:34AM (#6702116)
OP was clear about looking outside the US, but since I (and others) seem to really want to talk about this:

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=6702111

(Not trying to steal the OP's thunder--this is a separate discussion.)

Ask HN: What's the best place in the U.S. to live and work cheaply?

I think some of us are interested in this discussion in the other thread, but that's about working locations outside the U.S.Where would people choose to live cheaply and work on their own projects inside the country? For example, I noticed someone here promoting an incubator in Myrtle Beach recently, and it appears that one could rent a townhouse there for < $1k.From my own perspective the...

Don't let anybody discourage you--that's most important. Just do stuff.

It isn't hard to find examples of young millionaires and billionaires in this industry.

Re:A culture of beer and overtime on Thursday November 07, 2013 @09:15PM (#6694012)
That's another good question to ask: how often is overtime "required"?

You can usually spot it in the job ads themselves (look for "fast-paced," frequent references to "deadlines," and similar language).

Re:A culture of beer and overtime on Thursday November 07, 2013 @08:57PM (#6693958)
I don't think there's a sure-fire way to know, but you can ask upfront (even in the initial communications by email or phone) if it's a new position, or a "backfill."

And during the phone or in-person interview you can ask questions about team dynamics, like who you report to and are working with, how long the interviewer has been working there and how they like it, etc., to try to get a sense for how things work.

And I'd say ask as many questions as you can reasonably think of--it's more about how they answer questions than the answers themselves.

If they show resistance or evasiveness, then that may be a bad sign.

Re:A culture of beer and overtime on Thursday November 07, 2013 @08:18PM (#6693794)
I love leaving companies like that one. You should celebrate, with a beer, perhaps? (Kidding)

When you took the job, did you sign an offer letter that outlined your employment status and role with the company?

Just curious. I would think an offer letter would resolve any questions about that, should it become necessary.

Re:Square talking to banks about possible 2014 IPO on Thursday November 07, 2013 @07:20PM (#6693548)
You've finally solved for the mysterious Step 2!

It was board members, all along (nobody believed me).

"your firm is promoting to the public online dating services under the name ManyFish"

This looks like a boilerplate response, and that phrasing appears to cast your app as a competing service.

Like the others said, you probably either have to try to reach an actual human being at POF, or let the lawyerbots do their dirty, mechanical business.

Re:Show HN: Built a 'Kayak for courier services' on Thursday November 07, 2013 @09:21AM (#6689414)
Looks good! My search did timeout with a couple of attempts on "We are searching" (don't know if it's the HN effect). It worked on the third try.

A minor copy change suggestion:

"only pay after you created" -> "only pay after you create"

Re:Swiss forensic report on Arafat's death on Wednesday November 06, 2013 @03:47PM (#6685405)
So strange--I went to see what, if anything, Gérard de Villiers had written about the situation, and noticed he just died.

That always happens. I'll try not to think of anyone here.
