One woman's politeness is another woman's dishonesty.
Find a problem to solve. Don't focus on tools.

You want to do these side projects to show to yourself that YOU can do it. Focus on the problem not on the skill.

Re:We're in for 2 Months on Saturday April 04, 2020 @08:56PM (#22782824)
I don't buy this. You can have two populations one that social isolates and one that doesn't. You get pick which one you want to be in. Those two populations can't mix.

Never underestimate people's idealogical beliefs even under strain.

Re:Tesla Plans on Staying Open Despite Shelter in Place on Tuesday March 17, 2020 @04:18PM (#22609842)
So one either lives like you would or they are an evil monster. Makes sense.
What happens if someone tries to fix the car and hurts themselves and now tesla enabled that behavior. Safety first.
Every meeting should start with:

1. What am I doing that I should continue?

2. What am I doing that I should stop doing?

3. What should I start doing

If manager is open, you can say same things about her.

More succinctly:

1. Start

2. Stop

3. Continue

Don't hate the player hate the game.
Re:Ask HN: How did you fix your narcissism? on Thursday February 06, 2020 @06:56PM (#22261757)
It is about degrees. I used to be miserable trying to "behave" and realized that I was in the wrong environment. I was not a fit for that company or that culture. Working in tech has made it that I don't need to behave since most of my natural tendencies are acceptable there. How bad would it be if someone said that you have to become something I am not.

I agree that my comments could be harmful if it was the only one, but there needs to be balance in advice.

I assume this person is "successful", may be that's the faulty assumption.

Re:Ask HN: How did you fix your narcissism? on Thursday February 06, 2020 @03:17PM (#22259854)
The change should be his environment and not him. Far easier to change where you are than WHAT you are.
Re:Ask HN: How did you fix your narcissism? on Thursday February 06, 2020 @03:00PM (#22259710)
Or you might find people you do want to listen to. Sometimes you really are the only sane person or THE most interesting person in the room. It isn't you who is the problem but the room you occupy.

Think about this, if you were in a room with Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerburg, and Bernie Madoff, how much talking would you be doing?

Not that much.

Re:SEO case study: 8k to 200k monthly organic traffic on Thursday February 06, 2020 @02:54PM (#22259654)
Writing good content is hard. If a writer could do it, they are rarely going to be writing it to sell. So gaming the system and writing average content (much easier to produce) and gaming the system is the best way to go.
like a company is going to sue over this.

social media and shame culture makes this silly to attempt.

Re:Ask HN: What Skills to Acquire in 2020? on Tuesday February 04, 2020 @04:56PM (#22241458)
I bought food to cook for 2 days at a time. Requires 3 visits to grocery store per week. Given your shopping list is small doesn't take that much.

read never split the difference.

measure how often you're talking vs. they are if the split isn't 80% in their favor you're doing it wrong.

Re:Ask HN: I think I’ve burnt out. What should I do? on Monday January 27, 2020 @05:52PM (#22164704)
As tired as this cliche is, I have to ask if you workout.

I found that lifting or intense cardio helps me move out of my funks.

When I'm suffering through an intense workout I don't think about anything else. When I finish the workout, I can be so exhausted that I pass out and go to sleep. that in itself is a blessing.

Lastly, so much of stress is self-imposed. You are where you are, and whatever plans you have, are determined by you.

Be safe. Good luck.

Build vs. buy for tech platforms. 100% build or 100% buy both are dangerously answers from a senior tech person.

Re:How to identify an immoral maze on Wednesday January 15, 2020 @04:47PM (#22059099)
the 6 layers isn't really true, in part due to line managers can manage 15-30 people. If everyone is doing the same job that is fairly rote a single line manager can handle a lot of people, reducing layers. Additional CEOs tend to have a lot of direct reports.

Sample Example

(0 Layer) CEO --> 10 Direct reports is typical for large publicly traded companies.

(1 Layer) C-Level --> 6-8 (10,000 / 8 --> 1,250)

(2 Layer) SVP / VP -- > 6-8 (1250 / 6 --> ~200)

(3 Layer) Middle management (200/ 6 --> ~30)

(4 Layer) Line managers (1-25)

Re:Ask HN: Are books worth it? on Saturday January 04, 2020 @11:56PM (#21959728)
Yes. Find the top 10 most popular books by century read those. Never read anything where the author is still alive.

At the very least read Ben Franklins autobiography.

if you take mushrooms you will abandon the simplistic view implied by your statement.
Third path: It's a fun way to pass the time once in a while.

Fourth path: You learn what you need from it, that the world is just various inputs into your brain and gives you perspective to slow down.

As an aside, your post is full of negativity. I hope you get the help you need somewhere.

Re:Teen Marijuana Vaping Soars, Displacing Other Habits on Thursday December 19, 2019 @03:24PM (#21838856)
I can appreciate the perspective of "everyone has an agenda".

Some people attempt a almost a fact based conversation that is an exploration of a topic. Others have an opinion they want to push on others. I don't even try to figure out what someone agenda is. I look that there is one and stop focusing too hard right there and then.

I also suspect, I'm not the only one who operates like this.

If I have an agenda, it is to limit emotion in communication and make things more fact based.

This communication is likely to fail.

To reiterate, many people don't care to figure out what the agenda is and just ignore those who has one. Here i'm using agenda to stand for the typical partisan politics or other "normative" behavior.

Re:Teen Marijuana Vaping Soars, Displacing Other Habits on Wednesday December 18, 2019 @01:54PM (#21827984)
You can't really A/B test humans. Best thing that could be done is twin studies and even those have flaws.

By the way your line of questioning implies an agenda. I don't have an issue with that, but thought I'd highlight that for you.
