Maybe I'm uneducated here, but wouldn't this just commoditize the products of companies? Would it disincentivize them from creating their products in the first place?
Could weather or some other geographic/similar aspect be a factor?

We get tab groups, but can't get a working gradient without banding. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=627771
Re:Glamorous Toolkit on Sunday April 06, 2025 @08:21PM (#43606220)
Glamorous toolkit has always looked interesting to me, but feels a bit unapproachable. It just feels so foreign between smalltalk and a whole sort of philosophy that goes with it.

For those with more experience, is it still relevant? Can the same be accomplished with python and jupyter notebooks?

How long ago was that? I've been seeing consistent progress on bugginess.

Not who you are responding to, but it properly blocks ads. I can actually view things like recipes on mobile. It's great! (Blocks YT ads too.)

Sorry, what are you saying happens at that point?

Re:Oklch in CSS: why we moved from RGB and HSL (2024) on Sunday February 16, 2025 @10:41PM (#43074872)
There are cases of perceivable differences though like https://oklch.com/#70.29,0.2413,41.29,100 .
There may also be engineers working harder because of being worried about getting laid off. How could they separate those productivity increases from AI?
Re:We all took the DVD boom era for granted on Wednesday December 11, 2024 @11:36PM (#42396257)
Don't you get the majority of that with buying movies from Apple? You can get 4K and Dolby Atmos. If there's DRM anyway, it seems like the difference isn't worth it.
I agree with the problems. I'm a bit uninformed, but in theory ending privatization isn't the only option, right? Hasn't there been problems with corruption in centralized healthcare as well? It seems like regulation could be an option (though I know that it has its own trade-offs as well).

Also, healthcare isn't the only industry suffering this pain though obviously a very important one.

Also, there's a question of how much of this is a cultural problem. How has this sort of thing been addressed in the past? Is the same solution even possible now with the power imbalance created with the current state of capitalism and technology?

I recently looked at various alternatives to make and landed on https://taskfile.dev/

It handles dependencies and conditions well without needing to be a full blown bash expert.

Maybe it's harder, but I don't think anyone is immune to calorie restriction.
Re:Super Useful Chrome Plugins for Front-End Developers on Sunday September 22, 2024 @09:16PM (#41621523)
It's unfortunate that chrome extensions are major security liabilities.
What are open source alternatives to this? Can temporal.io do the same things?
Let's not pretend sweeteners are anywhere near as damaging as sugar.
Re:OpenAI requires NDA for employees to keep equity on Saturday May 18, 2024 @12:29AM (#40396445)
It might be that they agree to it initially when hired, so it doesn't matter if they sign something when they leave.

What aspects of BEAM perform poorly? (Genuinely asking. I’m not very familiar with it.)

Even if we have the collective wisdom, that doesn't mean it will outweigh the incentives, especially if that decision-making power is unchecked.
Re:Stop Worrying About Deepfakes on Thursday December 21, 2023 @12:23PM (#38723462)
Yup, and I'd expect that for an election year there will be a lot more. Even if none of it is directly sponsored by a candidate, supporters will likely create deepfake content, and it will be believable to some percentage of people.
The majority.

Jokes aside, soda is typically loaded with sugar, but diet sodas don't seem as bad.

Come on. This is a bad take. They "profit-share" with otherwise UNPAID creators. Other platforms license or produce content.

On top of that, the pricing feels high for most people, and no one trusts Google to not jerk them around, killing a product or changing pricing.

Re:The dark side of touch-screen tipping on Wednesday October 25, 2023 @01:22PM (#38015390)
I remember reading that a primary force in this, that's often overlooked, is the payment processors having incentive to raise the overall average transaction price so their cut is larger. That's why it's become so pervasive in the software. It's not necessarily businesses looking for a larger portion of employee compensation to come from tips.
Re:OpenAI: Our Approach to AI Safety on Wednesday April 05, 2023 @03:23PM (#35459160)
This seems a bit more focused on "AI ethics" than "AI safety". It makes sense that they are framing the conversation this way, but it doesn't talk about the more significant risks of AI like "x-risk", etc.
Re:How to Do Hard Things on Monday April 03, 2023 @03:53PM (#35430300)
Yes, they are inherently disabled. Medication can help, but even with strategies, tactics, and therapy, there is still brain chemistry at play. Medication can help, but has its trade-offs and isn't a silver bullet.

Self-discipline is also more costly. You can brute-force your way through tasks with ADHD, but it is more taxing on your overall energy. Those with ADHD typically experience impulses often and it's harder for them to ignore. Forcing yourself to ignore them requires extra energy. It's not sustainable to do all the time. It's hard for those without ADHD to truly understand what that's like.

In addition to impulsivity, executive dysfunction affecting starting tasks or work is also a big challenge.

Would it be better to be hired 1 month before Uber's IPO or 1 month after and why?
