Re:It is hard to recommend Google Cloud on Sunday September 22, 2024 @03:44AM (#41615344)
Eh. I wouldn’t use GCP precisely for this reason if I was building something on cloud.

Customer obsession (ugh) is just not in their DNA. I can tell firsthand they care more about what they want to do than what the customers want.

Sundar needs to go, period. All these articles undersell how bad the morale is at Google right now. It has been unpopular change after unpopular change, and Googlers have zero trust in the leadership. There's zero psychological safety anymore, and the environment is basically like this[1], but actually worse because even the "sister" teams in the same org are being very territorial.

I don't think the next person is going to be better (because they'll be appointed by the very same board), but Google needs a change at the top.

Re:Amazon 2020 Letter to Shareholders on Thursday April 15, 2021 @04:15PM (#26825590)
Hear hear. Amazon cost me my mental health and relationship. If they're treating us like this, I can't imagine how the folk working at FCs are treated.

Amazon's "Customer Obsession" comes at the expense of their employees.

Also the hypocrisy:

> Despite what we’ve accomplished, it’s clear to me that we need a better vision for our employees’ success. ...We are going to be Earth’s Best Employer and Earth’s Safest Place to Work.

Heh this is coming from a company who refused to release the data from their internal survey about WFH and then made the decision to force everyone come back to the office 5 times/week. I am sure that makes Amazon the best and safest place!

I really don't understand what Amazon is trying to do here, but this was so baffling that some employees thought the account was hacked and they cut tickets to the security team.

Pricing makes sense if you consider how Amazon operates at this point.

You put basically a MVP product out there with abnormal pricing. Your enterprise customers that are drowning in money can start using it and using that money you can grow your org by hiring more engineers. At this point you start working on adding new features and do cost optimization. Since your whole architecture was designed based on "we have to ship this ASAP", you deliver some real nice cost reduction easily. Then you reflect this to your customers and gain goodwill and good PR.
