Why did it take so long? Seems like an obvious thing in hindsight?
Re:An app called Libby and the big business of library e-books on Thursday September 02, 2021 @07:45PM (#28398778)
Are there any opensource apps that I can connect to San Jose public library? I have some features in mind, like sending a notification asking me to read a certain page at certain time of the day. When I click the link, it should take me to the next open page. Surprisingly no such apps exist so far

Ahem, phenomenal results for yourselves. But what did kids learn ? How is the retention?

Thanks. I will make sure to pay him a small amount.
Re:Ask HN: Are Unpaid Internships Unethical? on Tuesday August 17, 2021 @08:58PM (#28216591)
Thanks. I have no promises to make beyond telling him he will develop relevant job skills. If he doesnt like it after a month or so, he can happily walk away without loosing any money.
Re:Ask HN: Are Unpaid Internships Unethical? on Tuesday August 17, 2021 @08:56PM (#28216574)
Thanks. Thats an interesting perspective. How do distinguish between a guy volunteering vs me finding a guy willing to come and work with me? Is the latter what you call an internship while the former is volunteering?
Re:Ask HN: Are Unpaid Internships Unethical? on Tuesday August 17, 2021 @08:02PM (#28216215)
True but I want to be bit more ethical than saying noone is forcing him. I dont want to take "advantage" of his situation.
Re:Ask HN: Are Unpaid Internships Unethical? on Tuesday August 17, 2021 @07:21PM (#28215927)
Thanks for the perspective. Exactly like you said, tasks I assign are menial/entry level and make no monetary returns for me, but will be really helpful to the intern.
Re:Ask HN: Are Unpaid Internships Unethical? on Tuesday August 17, 2021 @07:18PM (#28215897)
Hours will be mutually determined but a minimum number of hours a week will help in getting out something tangible.

As per academic credit, it is a great point. Thx

Re:Ask HN: Are Unpaid Internships Unethical? on Tuesday August 17, 2021 @07:17PM (#28215884)
Thanks for replying and pointing out the framing. I am not going to set minimum hourly requirements but I also dont want him to work 3-4 hours a week and expect to see results. I said "making him work", because he will be ultimately working on my idea. But yes, the wording could be better. May be "collaborate " on my idea or some such thing

Ask HN: Are Unpaid Internships Unethical?

Suppose I, as an individual, offer to train my neighbor(21 yr old, university 3rd year bachelor's student) on latest technologies like JS, React etc and get him ready for a job. I plan to do this by making him work on a small pet project of mine. Frankly he has almost zero skills right now and is not really employable. Is it right of me not to pay him for his work? Is it unethical even if I...

All good points. Why do you want to work here is just a dumb question for this purpose. It basically forces me to lie and say you guys sound awesome instead of just saying your company ticks the right boxes for me.

Have you ever asked your plumber or handyman why they want to work for you ? Same circumstances, there also you want someone passionate.

Re:How to outsource marketing for your side project on Friday June 25, 2021 @11:51PM (#27638933)
Yes, sometimes it's possible. Sometime ago, I had considered doing it because I could not think like a marketing person. So, I told a struggling startup founder that I will do grunt marketing for them, they just have to teach me the steps involved. Now, after learning , I concluded that for every problem,, by and large,, there is already an imperfect solution. It's easier to approach the solution maker to market their product and rather than build myself, one from scratch If you want someone, you should atleast drop your contact details here, so that we can contact you.

Didn't Linus apologize sometime ago for talking like he talked on this list. Personally, I agree with what he says, but I dont like the tone.

Spouse is QA in apple. Lots of manual testing going on. Just getting started on automation
Re:Learn CSS on Friday May 21, 2021 @11:38AM (#27235433)
Is there a site where I can practice relatively simple css challenges. For example for this html, center the text and align text in all three boxes, etc. Css battle is great but there are only finished answers not explanations.

W3schools have some but they are too simplistic.

Congrats on launching. But how is this different from frontendmentor?

I have some feedback. Given that other sites are giving exact same service, this is not of much use to me. However, what I need is step by step instructions on how to accomplish a given template. I do not need finished code. I need instructions on how to build each component, styling of each header, each "card", how to use bootstrap rows and make sure nothing over flow, make sure images are not clipped inside grid layout etc. There are individual tutorials for each part but it has become hard to find tuorials for entire project.

Some youtube videos come close but since they are made by experts, its never clear what can go wrong and how one should reason about it.

I guess I want annotated solutions and not finished solutions. I gave same feedback for other sites, but they agreed its needed but didnt do anything about it.

Agreed. But I was talking from perspective of being a passive business for a single person
Thanks. This is great insight and one that is missing from most online discussions. I am really terrified of this situation because it will bring down my ROI. Also, I dont like to deal with contractors and related headaches. We will see how it pans out.
My tax advisor said that for our income levels, it will not decrease or increase any tax brackets.
Over the years, I got cold feet and paid off somenof the principal. Thats why I said overall I spent $350k so far
That's my fear. But can you tell me in what situations I cannot evict my tenants. (Honest question).
Yep. You are right. One thing that it helped me with is pickup a few managerial skills and have a nice diversion from day to day software stuff.
I have been part of feinternational for sometime and saw their prospectuses. In general, if there is an existing user base, then the price factors it in already. You must have a plan and ability to increase the userbase in order to get a return on investment. Otherwise, some competitor may simply attract your customers and you are doomed.
So, about renting, I bought a single family home for $500k in bay area. It now is worth $1M. Gets me rent before expenses of $40000. So far, I have spent about $5k per year on. Repairs etc. So effectively, I make about $20k after taxes, repairs, mortgage interest etc. Overall, I spent $350k by way of downpayment, mortage interest payment, etc. No major tenant issues.

Hence, I would peg my return on investment of 5% if I do not account for increase in price of the house. If I do, it would be around 10% which is what FAANG has been giving me, with much less hassles.

Decide for yourselves if this is passive enough for you.

Re:Verizon Sells AOL and Yahoo to Apollo for $5B on Monday May 03, 2021 @10:38AM (#27025634)
You have to read financial reports of aol if you can get hold of it. AOL doesn't want this info to be too widely known. Then all the old people will realize they are paying $25 per month for something that they can get for free!
Re:Verizon Sells AOL and Yahoo to Apollo for $5B on Monday May 03, 2021 @10:18AM (#27025375)
Before people go all ballistic, please remember that yahoo and AOL make $700 million from Mail and a billion dollars from search. AOL sells huge number of paid dialup based email accounts(for older people though). So the sale price is approximately two years of revenue. Apollo is getting it cheap!
I know. But I want to make sure it's not an oversight
