I'll admit in an earlier life I got suckered by Chamath's fast-talking, hyper-confident bluster. Dude was just a conman who got lucky. They say it's better to be lucky than smart.

This is true for most other countries. When I went to school before college, Math was just Math. There wasn't a Calculus or Algebra or Statistics class. You took Math and just did all of it in the Math class over the years, and you couldn't pick and choose. The distinctions only start in College. So everyone who graduated high school at least knew what each of these were about, even if they flat out flunked Math. I can't say how useful that was though.

I was once taking a trip from Canterbury to Glasgow. The train ride to Stansted airport cost more than twice the flight to Glasgow. Also, it's crazy just how cheap the flights are in Europe. How do the airline companies make any money?

People do actually realize. It's just that people have decided it's not the most important thing when it comes to delivering software. There's a reason Node and Python are the most popular ecosystems.

Yes, the reason I used to root for the US as a power was that they pretended to be ethical with stuff like the FCPA and the USAID. Of course those pretenses have been dropped, it's a wash really. I'm only left to hope for an end to whatever madness this is, since really, it looks like the US has lost to China and that's going to become very clear in the coming decades.

I used to think this, but I've been in the US just long enough to start rethinking it. The one thing I still prefer though is that each outlet has an off switch, no need to unplug your cable. Also, three prong cables are 90 degrees offset so it's easier to fit behind furniture.

But isn't this just entrepreneurship? The stories about starting and running companies don't sound like fun. I mean I was the first Engineer hire out of school for a small company and got to see this in up close. These guys are trying to run a business in a ridiculously competitive and saturated market. It's not a hobby.

Perhaps the prejudice is that the AI video is a means of manipulation making the victim appear more sympathetic. "This person must be an absolute monster to shoot such a good, kind forgiving guy." That was exceptionally poor judgement on the part of the judge.

This is great man. I've been on the other end of this. My annual high school fees cost $700. Couldn't afford it, and it was extremely stressful. If not for the benevolence of my high school principal, I have dropped out. It completely changed my life. You're making a massive difference.

So far so good for the rest of us without brains. Pixel 6 got it's full 5 years of promised support. We're hoping it's cheaper to provide the full promised 7 years of support than to pay the class action lawyers.

I think this is a case of AI ruining the hardware market. We used to almost exclusively use Dell, but now we've been forced to look elsewhere and go through validating new vendors. The lead-times are ridiculous, and these guys now only pay attention to the really big guys. Not sure I can blame them though, you've gotta do what's best for your business.

I don't think this is actually true. Phone makers seem happy to have the platform locked down even further. They're putting even more roadblocks, as evidenced by most of them making bootloaders unlockable.

I ran a half marathon this weekend. Maybe 70% of people, including myself, had Brooks. The rest were Hoka mostly Hoka and a mix of Nikes and Asics. I had never heard of Brooks until a few years ago when I googled best running shoes and went down a rabbit-hole that barely cared about Nike.

You know, I don't think I've ever accused anyone of being a shill. I've thought about it maybe a few times (daringfireball). This is going to be as close as I get. I don't know the facts in this case but I cannot believe the argument being made here with a straight face. Is it common sense that tools you use and pay for steal your work and profit off of it at your expense and without recognition? If this isn't the textbook definition victim blaming, I don't know what is.

The question is, where are you going to go? Finance? Farming, Logistics? Writing/Literature/Philosophy? Big Pharma? All those people are funneling funds to people you find utterly objectionable. You'll find that every career/industry is probably proportionally representative of people who share your values as those who don't. Tech is is only so visible to you because you are so immersed in it. Care less about "Tech" and more about your family/community/friends.

I decided I was just gonna get the Fitbit air as an accessory to a smart watch for sleep tracking. 7 days of battery life and a 5 minute charge for a full day battery is enough for that. And it's not nearly as clunky as a smart watch.
