They are great! We have been using them for a couple years now. Highly recommend.

ConferenceBadge landing page is one of the best I've seen. Nice work!
Encrypted Search is listed as "Killed" because Google started redirecting encrypted.google.com to the homepage... now all queries are encrypted by default, instead of only those originating from that subdomain [1].

I'd say that's an upgrade.

Deck: $2.1B in revenue by 2011

Reality: $500M in revenue in 2014

Moral: Even the most successful startups don't hit their seed-stage revenue projections :)

I don't blame them when the Unsubscribe link is buried at the bottom of a 8MB marketing newsletter in 4px font.

Re:Carl Icahn Takes $100M Stake in Lyft on Friday May 15, 2015 @12:17PM (#9551578)
I wonder how much of the company the Lyft founders still own. They have raised over $1B at relatively (compared to Uber) low valuations.
Re:Smart watches are dumb on Saturday May 09, 2015 @11:08PM (#9518635)
They have a lower-priced version (that's not Swiss made) with all of the same features: http://withings.com/us/en/products/activite-pop
Re:Smart watches are dumb on Saturday May 09, 2015 @10:11PM (#9518491)
The author mentions the Withings Activite as a viable, albeit less "smart" alternative to the iWatch, and I just had to chime in -- the Activite is one of the best devices I've ever owned. It's beautiful, useful, and inconspicuous. And no, I don't work for Withings.

Those of you in the market for a smartwatch (or any watch really) should check it out: http://withings.com/us/en/products/activite

Re:Ask HN: Do bootstrapped billion-dollar companies exist? on Thursday July 24, 2014 @04:53PM (#8082123)
Lots of non-technology companies.

Out of tech companies -- Craigslist, Atlassian, 37Signals, possibly MailChimp.

Fringe examples -- Indeed sold for $1B and only took a small amount of later-stage funding [1] from USV. WhatsApp took $8M from Sequoia but apparently didn't spend any of it [2].

Re:The Spectacular Failure Of Better Place on Monday April 14, 2014 @02:56AM (#7584854)
Better Place failed because swappable batteries don't make sense. The technology is too complex and it would have required a massive leap of faith amongst automakers to adopt the standard from an startup, even one as well-funded as Better Place.

I worked in the electric vehicle industry for 4 years, and it was clear early on that the market was moving towards permanent battery storage (not unlike smartphones) with intermittent charging taking place at public locations. Today, the vast majority of EV charging takes place at home.

Better Place management did not to listen to the market and the company suffered greatly as a result. If they would have pivoted to building recharge stations or charging networks they just may have had a chance to succeed.

Re:Google splits into GOOG and GOOGL today on Wednesday April 02, 2014 @10:18PM (#7520506)
This is meant do to one thing -- let the founders retain control while allowing for large stock acquisitions. It's possible Google was muscled out of the Whatsapp deal simply because they couldn't pony up the money. $20B is almost half of their cash on hand. Note that the Nest and Waze acquisitions (small in comparison) were paid for almost entirely in cash.
Re:Important Metrics in a Startup's Financial Statements on Friday January 17, 2014 @04:49PM (#7078653)
This is why I love software companies:

Revenue per employee. The beauty of software businesses is their leverage. Google's market cap is 40% larger than Walmart but it has only 2% the size of Walmart's employee count.

Without providing an easy way to pay they are losing lots of potential customers. If they just added a simple Stripe form, their conversions would double overnight.
