Re:Google cloud outage takes down banks on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @10:46PM (#50175459)
Interesting take on the timezone. I imagine a lot of people have their data there for only residency reasons. Even if it is GMT people still use something like worldtimebuddy to sync up.

Sounds like the ops team had one hell of a day.

Re:McDonald's Gives Its Restaurants an AI Makeover on Tuesday March 11, 2025 @01:32AM (#43329436)
“McDonald’s tapped Google Cloud in late 2023 to bring more computing power to each of its restaurants—giving them the ability to process and analyze data on-site. The setup, known as edge computing, can be a faster, cheaper option than sending data to the cloud“

What fresh hell is this?

It seems like the lack of operations during US holidays would be a big oversight.
I wonder how many super yachts are actually destroyers.
Re:How is a company that sells canned water worth $1.4B? on Monday March 18, 2024 @04:10PM (#39749357)
Because when you are at a rock concert and you want something light to drink, it is cooler to ask the bar tender for Liquid Death rather than a Perrier.
Re:Homes need to be built for better internet on Friday December 08, 2023 @12:32PM (#38571651)
This. They wanted to drill a hole in my place to run a line from the pole. The line would go right past a window. It just seemed unprofessional.
I agree. If true, this appears to represent an enormous hack against vulnerabilities in humans. It should not be suppressed.
Re:I Accidentally Saved My Company Half a Million Dollars on Monday October 30, 2023 @09:04PM (#38078590)
Yeah. I went through a rigorous exercise with sales last year to try to get a good estimate on what it would cost to run the database for a year for our application. They said it would be around 150k.

I threw all of their configuration advice out the window and run all extra small at 1 minute idle. No issues for my use case and we paid 17k for the year.

I have to expect that snow will change their pricing model soon.

I had their Sonic Nurse facemask during covid. It was a kool thing.
Technically it is Nature Medicine. Nature rejected the paper.

Re:CISA: Election Security Rumor vs. Reality on Wednesday October 05, 2022 @11:36PM (#33104087)
It mentions system testing; i read here that testing could only be done according to criteria provided by the vendor.

Re:The Nevada national security site pt 1 on Tuesday September 13, 2022 @10:42PM (#32832700)
Fascinating. It seems we are keeping a site on standby so that it can “perform an underground nuclear test within 24 to 36 months.”

I hope that is a competitive timeline.

Article says airplane mode just turns off access to baseband.

I thought the whole point of airplane mode was to prevent interference by eliminating radio signals.

The title of the study: "The Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market in Wuhan was the early epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic"

Yet: "the observation that the preponderance of early cases were linked to the Huanan market does not establish that the pandemic originated there."

What was the purpose of the study?

Re: title

Was this ever not the case?

Were these test results reported in the official stats ?

TIL shitexpress.com exists as a service.
Can you do this on an iPhone? The first time I was in a Tesla, my initial thought was why can’t my phone tune into FM Radio.

If someone knows about medicine, are they required to utilize proper words like efficacy?
Re:Back Orifice (1998) on Saturday September 04, 2021 @11:56AM (#28416188)
I know what you mean. I recall that installing software from the internet was rather novel in the late 90s.
Re:Back Orifice (1998) on Saturday September 04, 2021 @09:55AM (#28415111)
I installed this on a pc at work when it came out to see what it could do.

I must have forgot to shut it off because there was a gang of security people in my office the next morning.
