Re:You Know Who Hates AI? Insurance Claims Adjusters on Wednesday September 02, 2026 @11:32AM (#49537828)
Interesting thing to ponder: How much time, money, energy (et al) is being used in the (now) ever-escalating war between generating and detecting AI content?

This goes for HR, education, code review, on and on.

I know some would label this view as "Luddite" with derision, but learning some of the background of the actual Luddites, the parallels are hard to ignore. If you're interested, 99pi did a solid episode recently [1].

Yes it's ALSO to a promote a book, but still... there's a lot more to it than just mindlessly raging against a new technology.

Yep, I think vertex is one of the companies trying to tackle an encapsulated set of insulin producing cells.

Neat stuff!

Despite that, glad to see it in a human subject.

I’ve had T1D for more than 30 years and have seen every headline under the sun with a “cure” always sometime in the next 5 years, so my expectations are properly tempered.

Still excited by it but a long way from clinics handing this out as a solution (if it’s viable).

There are also loads of tests for antibodies now; some are even (gasp) free for qualifying people. More here: https://www.breakthrought1d.org/early-detection/#screening-o...
Re:Dial-up Internet to be discontinued on Monday August 11, 2025 @10:30AM (#44864525)
I know a few news sites have low bandwidth versions, which are arguable way better than the auto-play video and ads plastered across their “normal” sites.

A couple examples:

Perhaps those of us voicing no opinion at all are the crazy ones.

I remember this being a key troubleshooting step. Listen/feel for the hum of the hard drive OR the telltale click clack, grinding, etc that foretold doom.

I can see people using this to have their websites (or apps) fit into the design of Apple's OS 26 design language. Neat!

A neat project you (and others) might want to check out: https://kiwix.org/

Lots of various sources that you can download locally to have available offline. They're even providing some pre-loaded devices in areas where there may not be reliable or any internet access.
