Curious, why would DHH trigger a mass exodus?
Re:Apps SDK on Monday October 06, 2025 @03:22PM (#45495221)
If you ask it to build a headless frontend web app, it immediately starts generating code with Next.js. I’ve always wondered how it was trained to default to that choice, given the smorgasbord of web frameworks out there. Next.js is solid, but it’s also platform-ware, tightly coupled to commercial interests. I wish there were more bias toward genuinely open-source technologies.
Re:Why is there no government-built social media? on Wednesday July 05, 2023 @11:41AM (#36601985)
Why can't this just be on their website? Not everything needs engagement from the masses.

Also building online communities is incredibly difficult and resource heavy, seeing that we can barely get enough funding for teachers to run their classrooms appropriately would this be the best use of taxpayers money?

Re:One Man's Life of No Regret (2009) on Sunday March 03, 2019 @01:21PM (#19295891)
I've been following him also...he is everywhere lol.

He mentioned he had a tech job at one point on one of his blog posts.

I absolutely love your blog (and that Jeep). Been reading it since you started your Africa trip!

Good luck and keep it up.

Re:GitHub and Jira Software Integration on Thursday October 04, 2018 @11:09PM (#18145448)
I'd highly recommend Asana. Plenty of integration, performant, and the learning curve isn't too steep.
Re:How we do Vue at GitLab: one year later on Friday November 10, 2017 @09:18PM (#15674636)
Curious, how long did it take before you before emacs was your go-to choice?

I'm a big vi and sublime text user but always open for better tooling.

btw - I actually agree with you on the learning thing but React just sucks. I'm able to get shit done with Vue and at the end of the week I haven't wasted three afternoons learning jsx/webpack/deployment/relearning-a-new-way-of-doing-css blah blah. I say this with some hesitation but CSS is a solved problem in my opinion with Sass.

there is a lot of Flash out there in the Ad and Video world
Re:Ask HN: What browser extensions do you use? on Sunday February 05, 2017 @08:07PM (#13575781)
Wapperly (I think it's called) shows me what the website/web app is built with, Vue dev tools, Panda.

Gdamn this is a good answer
Re:Ask HN: Good sci-fi movies? on Monday October 17, 2016 @09:47PM (#12731404)
Moon, Ex Machina, The Matrix
Re:Show HN: Learn Redux on Monday May 16, 2016 @11:19AM (#11706848)
I did Wes Bos's React for Beginner's course and it was fantastic. and he's Canadian!

I did Tyler McGinnis's class over at Egghead as well. Both were top notch.

Re:Ask HN: What's your greatest weakness? on Monday April 25, 2016 @07:01PM (#11568082)
Talk honestly about things you are working towards professionally.

This has always worked well for me for a few reasons 1) the honesty will show and be appreciated, building trust with your prospective employer and 2) they can make an inform decision as to how they can benefit from your future growth. Both parties win because expectations are set from the get go.

For example, I have a phone interview tomorrow, and I will probably talk about things I am trying to level up on (Angular 2, Laravel and Python/Flask etc) yet, I'm very familiar with javascript, OOPHP, and most of the front end stack.

If you try to fool them it will turn out bad for both in the long wrong. I actually prefer to take a code exam so they know exactly what my weaknesses and strengths are.

Hope this helps.

Re:Best way to drive traffic to my website? on Friday March 04, 2016 @02:03PM (#11226056)
If you have capital for investment in programmatic display ads you can buy the audience that way. I work in digital for a radio/publishing company and I can honestly say the programatic ads work.
Would you care to explain the cockroaches metaphor? I'm confused.
Re:React v0.14 on Wednesday October 07, 2015 @10:54PM (#10350671)
Would you mind explaining? As a jQuery believer, to me this looks like a selector method - getElementByID or something. I'm guessing this is against the whole idea of React.
Re:Diet Advice That Ignores Hunger on Sunday August 30, 2015 @09:02PM (#10144944)
Ads pay my salary. I agree. Someone has to pay for the free content everyone is getting. I will say that we try to created interesting and meaningful ads, not just garbage. We are one of the good guys, at least we try to be.

Honestly, ad devs are some of the savviest javascript developers out there. We have a lot of constraints and need to move fast and scrappy on a daily basis.

I won't be doing it forever however it's one of those things that holds my interest until i get in my car and go home for the day.

* I work for a very large company that own radio & publishing properties.

And Reconnect Austin
I used Grunt for a little while until I discovered Gulp. Thought I'd post another option if anyone is interested. Much easier to get up and going. Although it doesn't have as large a community of tools. I'm confident it will get there.

Both are great work horses.

Re:Show HN: LaraJobs – Jobs for web artisans on Sunday July 13, 2014 @01:00PM (#8027899)
here here. It's just a catch phrase. Sorta like at Subway where they are "sandwich artists". I doubt they go around calling themselves that.

Anyhow, as a front end "artisan", Laravel is pretty awesome to work with. Especially the Blade templating system.

In many ways, I totally agree with this.

It is very dangerous advice to go around and tell people to "work less, live more", or "quit your job, go live life". This isn't a one size fits all message (I'm not saying the OP is giving out advice. Or saying he thinks everyone should follow suit. He is simply telling his story, which I found to be a very interesting and enjoyable read.)

I got where I am at because I work(ed) my balls off. Late, Late nights and grinding out solutions to problems in coffee shops and hours and hours of reading and hacking.

The "Rework" approach comes with a huge caveat lector!

However, I wish this guy the best of luck. More jobs for the poor, smart, and hungry...

Re:Python.org Redesign Preview on Sunday March 17, 2013 @09:37PM (#5391901)
+1 to this. I was drawn to Code Academy because I could immediately start playing around with code on the home page. (At least it used to be like that. Not sure anymore.)
Re:I'm a loser and I want to change that - now on Sunday March 17, 2013 @04:46PM (#5390974)
I agree I didn't take this as a severely depressed person. Just someone who wants to change. Kudos and good luck I say. Work hard, be good to people and good things will come.
Re:How I Fired Myself on Thursday February 28, 2013 @11:03AM (#5299250)
I don't think it is that far-fetched. I've had experience with a well known company that does millions in revenue per week (web based shopping cart) that just FTP's everything with no DVCS. Designers, developers, managers all have access to the server and db.
