Re:Why do self-respecting hackers use Gmail & Co? on Saturday February 04, 2012 @06:56PM (#3552725)
Because gmail is a good product.

Please don't tell us what not to use. Point us to a better product. (spam, uptime, ease of use, free, fast, etc) Got one?

Yeah, I figured.

Wow _you_ got funded for running a company? That's inspiring.

Ask HN: Further reduce energy consumption?

I live in NYC and don't own a car, I bike to work whenever the whether permits. All the appliances I own are energy star. All my light bulbs are the energy saving type. What else can I do? I don't want to buy energy credits, I want to reduce my own energy consumption.

1. opensource it (the code, so people can build their own website) 2. provide an api

You'll soon face spam issues though. what's your spam strategy?

Fix bugs. That's the best way to learn and make friends. It will give you exposure to the code base and existing code conventions.you'll learn much more and get some street cred.

Re:Steve Ballmer: iPad Not affordable for all on Sunday June 06, 2010 @11:35AM (#1408609)
Reality Check: Windows not affordable for all, either! Which is the reason for piracy, of course, but Ballmer wouldn't know that, would he? ;)

If you follow the argument, Free (beer) wins. Take that, Ballmer.

Godfather, anyone? :-)
Re:Why I love everything you hate about Java on Monday February 08, 2010 @07:40PM (#1111168)
I think folks who complain about java must make sure that they are using a very powerful ide first (example: eclipse or intellij idea) If, having used and mastered a good ide and all it's features, you still don't like it, it's a fair point.

Eclipse can make so many things in java drastically fast and easy. And I think that's where java shines. I'm yet to see as powerful an IDE for any other language. (Although I admit, I do not program for msft platforms and hence, never used msft ides)

Re:Googlers Visualized on Monday January 25, 2010 @09:36AM (#1075154)
Look at the source of that html. Looks like someone ran a for loop for all the img. It'd be cool to use some ajax and make this update automatically when the number changes.
Re:$1K iPhone app on Sunday January 17, 2010 @07:07PM (#1059161)
I think another important thing to note is that $300 of it goes to apple. Time to buy apple stock!
The problem is that most folks are not made aware of the fact that privacy is a one-way street. Once open to all, the information is always lurking around somewhere, basically impossible to delete. I try to explain that to non-techie folks and they don't believe it.
I <3 Amazon, but I've started looking for alternatives (for buying, not for reviews) ever since they started charging us NYers tax. Sure, not their fault, blame NY state, but the point is, they are about 10% more expensive suddenly. Summary: If they do become super-big expect more taxes or more hindrances.
Re:Why Terrorists Leave Me Bullish On Apple on Monday December 28, 2009 @09:37AM (#1018579)
This is moronic. The author expects TSA to 'approve' apple laptops? The TSA will have to go around and train every flight attendant to recognize what brand of laptop it is and then allow/disallow it? Never ever gonna happen. Far easy and safe to just say 'no laptops allowed'
Re:Fan Bi, Blank Label, and the case for the Founders Visa on Thursday December 17, 2009 @09:14AM (#1001024)
The problem is such visa issuances invariably involve working closely with IRS (to ensure the person actually runs the business, makes enough money, employs all the people he/she claims, etc). And I don't think these two parts of the government have great communication or the infrastructure to have a good communication.
Re:Ask HN: Whom do you admire most? on Thursday October 08, 2009 @12:46AM (#868311)
Gandhi. For being fearless _and_ inspiring an entire country to be fearless without a single weapon in hand. Think about it, it's nothing short of a miracle.
Re:If you could meet one person... on Sunday December 21, 2008 @10:55AM (#405462)
meet yourself. Most people don't know themselves deep enough to figure out their own plusses and minuses and act on them. Every person has the potential to achieve success, but it begins from self realization.
Re:Is releasing early ever a bad idea? on Friday September 05, 2008 @12:21PM (#295980)
Google didn't release Chrome till it was good enough to be released. This, from a company which completely believes in releasing early! Of course Chrome is still beta, but there's a world of difference between "Google releases another mediocre product" and "Chrome is amazing!"
Re:Ask YC: Why can't anyone compete with craigslist? on Wednesday August 20, 2008 @07:31PM (#282183)
1. It works 2. It is cheap (mostly free)

This is the same reason why it's hard to beat google, ebay, etc.

Things change when the company which owns a market leading product makes a mistake - case in point: Microsoft Windows Vista.

Almost exactly the same as in India. That's why people here in US think that everyone in India is smart _and_ hardworking. Well, the truth is that they encounter only those people who have survived all this. There are countless millions who suffer.
Re:Can Indian Society produce Gates/Larry/Zuckerberg? on Monday August 11, 2008 @05:26PM (#273342)
I think the single biggest factor is fear of failure. And it's mostly because of society (but other factors too). If you start something in India and fail, you are forever termed as a failure. No one moves on - anywhere you go, your failure follows you. The stigma is unbearable to live with.

Given this scenario, getting a 'safe' job and earn money working for someone else is the better option for most.
