We can't relax. Solving problems on tight deadlines means that we are inherently paranoid about doomsday scenario. But at the same time, no need to be overly pessimistic :)
Re:Understanding Big Tech Salaries on Friday July 19, 2024 @12:41AM (#41002046)
Absolutely. It's purely vanity in a way it's a power play. They can afford to negotiate, so they will.

If they don't have to negotiate, for example when the market is bad or when there are competing offers from a non-peer - they choose not to.

>But oh, hey, you just bought a vacuum cleaner? I know what you would really like! MORE VACUUMS!

I have worked on the same recommendation systems. It's also the most often oncall issue. The problem is mostly due to lag in event processing (especially orders).

Re:The Deliberate Practice Guide on Wednesday June 14, 2023 @09:03AM (#36325268)
Sorry for kinda hijacking this, but it is the main reason I am building trydeepwork.com, to actually put deep work or deliberate practice into actual "practice".
This is exactly the way trydeepwork.com works. You should give it a shot :)
Re:Childhoods of Exceptional People on Monday February 20, 2023 @05:01AM (#34866726)
we see the same in tech too. many of the genius billionaires somehow just got started during the boom period.
Re:Childhoods of Exceptional People on Monday February 20, 2023 @03:24AM (#34866193)
IMO "abundance of low hanging fruit" is the main factor As Physics got more saturated, and matured, these geniuses somehow just stopped.

Re:Tell HN: We Need Robots.txt but for AI on Tuesday January 10, 2023 @09:46AM (#34325590)
Even if it's not legally binding, it will be, and should be embarrassing for a big corp to do things that they are specifically not asked to do.

For example, Google doesn't really surface those pages hidden by robots.txt, even if they can.

Re:Tell HN: We Need Robots.txt but for AI on Tuesday January 10, 2023 @09:44AM (#34325556)
The problem is that AI is infinitely scalable. Yes, I can get inspired by your writing, but I won't be able to replace you by churning out huge number of articles. AI can.

Scale changes (and should change) how things are done.

Tell HN: We Need Robots.txt but for AI

The web is filled with posts where people have poured heart and soul into their writing. Just because they post on the internet, doesn't mean that other companies own it.We do this for search engines with robots.txt. We should do the same for AI.

It felt as if I was reading the Stripe memo.
I completely agree (as another employee of FAANG). It's ridiculously hard to do anything against policy once it's set, and trust me, the policies are set. Media overplays a lot of things which aren't just there.

The sad reality is people are very predictable, even with basic data.

Re:How do you get to do deep work? on Saturday September 10, 2022 @12:21PM (#32792001)
I've recently started using trydeepwork.com! Nifty little tool for tracking your sessions.

Exactly. This is the right explanation.
