Thank you for your client. I also use it every day and have even contributed to it. I also never use the browser version on my phone anymore.
Re:10x Engineer on Monday September 23, 2013 @03:48PM (#6433673)
I believe that was one of the points of the article. "10x Engineer" is being thrown around as another euphemism for "Rockstar" or "Ninja" without any true meaning.
Re:The Complete iOS Developer's Style Guide on Tuesday August 27, 2013 @02:20PM (#6285178)
This is one of those community consensus things. Most of the style guides and Apple's own examples usually include the opening brace on the same line as the conditional or method.

The real 50/50 proposition is having else on a new line. Some people love that and some hate it. It was hard for me to know what the consensus is, so I picked one way and if it turns out to not be what the majority find correct, others can correct it.

With Mad Men and Breaking Bad winding down, I wonder if AMC can maintain it. They seem to have garnered the reputation of being hard on showrunners (Both Matthew Weiner and Vince Gilligan have had issues with the network). Walking Dead is on it's third showrunner.

Another network, FX, seems to be trying the HBO/AMC model in getting quality programming and is going out of their way to appear showrunner friendly. It'll be interesting to see if they can capitalize on some of AMC's missteps in nickel-and-diming their own shows.

Re:The Facebook experiment has failed on Monday June 03, 2013 @12:11PM (#5814053)
The solution to this problem was G+ and that failed too. I find myself using Facebook less and less. I'm not bitter about it and I'm not making a conscious decision to stay away. I just am finding less and less value in it.
Re:Instagram's official response on Tuesday December 18, 2012 @05:49PM (#4940084)
I would pay for this too. Unfortunately, not a lot of people would.
Re:Instagram's official response on Tuesday December 18, 2012 @05:25PM (#4939956)
Because some day they will want to do the things he is insisting they "have no intention" of doing and this post will come back to bite them.
Re:Instagram's official response on Tuesday December 18, 2012 @05:24PM (#4939946)
I agree. There is a lot of attention paid to TOS changes lately. How could they not see that this would come with heavy backlash? I know he keeps saying "not our intention" in that post, but intentions don't amount to anything if the TOS clearly gives them carte blanche with your photos. Just some really bad public relations going on there.
Re:Instagram's official response on Tuesday December 18, 2012 @05:19PM (#4939917)
Exactly. There is a big difference between "not our intention" and "we legally can't do that"
Regarding the Hunter S. Thompson anecdote:

I've heard this story many times over the years and was always found it amusing but was skeptical that it did HST any good. I mean, what use is it to blindly just copy something letter by letter?

I did Nanowrimo on a whim this year and it was a lot of fun (I doubt I'm actually any good at it, though). In doing it I found myself going to Gatsby and a Hemingway book (The Sun Also Rises) for examples of clear, direct prose. I thought back to this Thompson anecdote and thought to myself that if I ever wanted to really pursue writing, a straight copy of one of those books would help my prose ten fold.

So I agree with this article. Type out the code you're borrowing from, don't copy and paste. Also, tchlock23 is right in that you also need to start some small projects from scratch and suffer through them with minimal help.

Re:I love you, dad on Thursday December 13, 2012 @03:05PM (#4917768)
I've never met Markus Persson, but its obvious from reading his tweets and posts that he is a good person. If anyone deserves the success he's had, its him.
Re:Google Maps for iOS on Thursday December 13, 2012 @11:36AM (#4916446)
As a timed test, I wanted to see how long it would take me to search for my favorite Phoenix, AZ coffee shop (Lux). I did the test from start up to clicking on the pin on an iPhone 4.

Google Maps: 22 seconds Apple Maps: ??? It took me to Luxembourg

I think I know which map app I'll be using from now on.

Sort of off-topic and I've harped on this before, but when I search "google maps" in the app store, it's the fifth search result!

As a developer in the App Store, I really hope they do something to fix the abysmal searches in it.

Re:How the Apple TV will work on Monday December 10, 2012 @12:22PM (#4900265)
If they really want to change the game, they need to find a way to offer a la carte network subscriptions and full on-demand (similar to HBOGo) for every channel. I would pay a premium for a service where I could buy HBO, ESPN and Comedy Central and have access to those network's entire archives as well as the latest programming.

Its obvious that is the future (HBO already does it and its amazing) so anything less would be a step in the wrong direction for them.

Re:Snag.gy - Paste images directly to the web on Friday December 07, 2012 @12:37PM (#4888043)
This is good. I wish it had an easier way to get to the direct image link (Right now I have to click the link then right-click the image and then copy image URL).
Re:Google Apps stops accepting free sign-ups on Friday December 07, 2012 @12:29PM (#4888007)
To answer my own question. I see now that it isn't saying that I am currently using a free trial, the button is to upgrade and get the free trial.

This is important though. DO NOT TRY THE FREE TRIAL UNLESS YOU PLAN ON STICKING WITH IT.

After yesterday, even if you have a legacy free account, you give up that privilege if you try the free 30 days. See here:

Re:Google Apps stops accepting free sign-ups on Friday December 07, 2012 @11:49AM (#4887781)
I'm confused here. It says nothing changes for existing customers but when I log into my domain's Google App dashboard I see this now: "Free 30 day Google Apps for Business trial" with an upgrade button. Does anyone else see this?
Re:Something really scary is going on in Germany on Thursday December 06, 2012 @03:25PM (#4883623)
I get what you're saying but in this specific instance, Google was right to delete them from news.google and the general index. The newspapers can't have it both ways (pay us to show up on Google News but keep us for free on Google Search).
Not to turn political (And I'm independent) but Obama said something during the debates that rang really true to me. He said that the low level jobs in this country are going away for good and we need to focus on creating mid-level jobs.

It makes sense that as society and technology evolve, the low skill jobs will be replaced by automation. I think this is a good thing. In the long term, we shouldn't shun technology just because it keeps a real human from doing a mundane task 40 hours a week.

Re:IRecognition: I am no longer Apple's Target Market on Thursday December 06, 2012 @11:18AM (#4882308)
Full Disclosure: I'm an Apple user that has been criticizing them for the last few years for a variety of things but...

This article (at least the first half) comes down to:

Apple makes products that don't suit me (okay, so don't buy an iPad).

Apple has glued their new screens to the metal (Is this really that big of a deal?).

Apple uses proprietary screws (This has been done for years)

There are lots of things in the curated Mac App Store that are of no use to him (So don't use the App Store or don't buy apps that are useless to you)

In the comments, the OP admits that he will continue to use Apple hardware because it is the best but will run Linux (Apple makes their money off hardware sales, so its of no loss to them).

There are many reasons to criticize Apple lately, I just don't see these reasons as having merit.

Sounds like the automobile recall algorithm from Fight Club. Sadly, you're probably right.
Re:Big News From Mars? Rover Scientists Mum For Now on Tuesday November 20, 2012 @10:58AM (#4809522)
We're announcing that we can't announce what we've found.

Seriously, though, I hope the results of whatever are confirmed. Not just for science but for justification for more funding to flow into space exploration.

Re:Prototyping iPhone apps on paper with POP on Friday November 16, 2012 @11:01AM (#4794331)
Okay, I'll admit that I sort of rolled my eyes at the top of the overview but by the end I was totally searching the app store for this app. What a novel and great idea.
Re:Dole/Kemp '96 Online Campaign on Wednesday November 14, 2012 @11:04AM (#4783872)
I think the biggest aesthetic change was between 04 and 08 which makes sense sine that was the era that so-called "Web 2.0" took off.
Re:Dole/Kemp '96 Online Campaign on Wednesday November 14, 2012 @10:52AM (#4783821)
I'm with you for the most part but I find that #fff background with #000 text is pretty harsh on my eyes. I think there is a sweet spot somewhere in the middle.

The biggest problem with readability for me lately is awful Google Fonts which never render right.

The racism that is charted on this map is way less dangerous than the subtle racism on display here on HN. And no, I didn't vote for Obama.
Re:Introducing the new compose in Gmail on Tuesday October 30, 2012 @04:23PM (#4719333)
Normally I'd agree but I came in here to post this same thing as the page is almost unreadable for me in Chrome.
