100%. The tech my father tried to use in the last year of his MND was so poor (effort to train it, reality of what it delivered- jilted voice).

The impact on his quality of life - imagine not being able to communicate at all - would have been massive were it better.

Re:Ask HN: What's happening with Gmail spam filtering? on Wednesday September 21, 2022 @08:31AM (#32924070)
The "Dicks Sporting Goods" email is insane - probably hourly at the moment, from what would appear obviously bogus email senders. What is the non-obvious answer as to why these get through?
Re:Show HN: Long Range E-Bike on Friday November 12, 2021 @01:45PM (#29203020)
Great article. Bosch seems to be the go to for most electric bikes sold in london. My experience so far is OK; school run replacement has been brilliant. The range estimation is ridiculously bad! I find the battery bars are better estimator.

I this spurs on more entrants or drives more features. Recharging feels too frequent. There's no feedback on 'driving' style and impact on range. I'd love regenerative breaking. Silly things like a clock on the control pane would be hugely useful options.

I don't doubt many legit uses, but similar subjective observation in London. Frequently vandalised, message board for sex workers, or defacto public urinals. It was surprisingly easy to get one removed from a nearby street given minimal usage and general abuse.

Reeder + Feedly.

I spent a lovely afternoon there in '16 doing just that and concur about the odd vibe / fascinating but stagnated promise.
Same - hugely frustrating.
Re:Canada to ban keeping whales, dolphins in captivity on Tuesday June 11, 2019 @07:54AM (#20154606)
Do they not still allow quite a lot of whale hunting?
Dumb question - how automated is an automated solution that 'refactors COBOL to java' in 18 months? Impressed with the solution / outcome.
Out of interest, did you guys give up, plod on or pick someone else?! If so, who?
Last time I checked a lot of that Saudi wealth sits in dollar denominated assets. Good luck with the devaution!
Via payment processors ... prevent people buying this currency / trading at exchanges that enable it?
66% of 115 specialists polled did not refuse a difficult operation.

33% thought about how it would impact their statistics, or put more generously, thought hard about the probability of the patient surviving presumably quite serious surgery.

Yes mortality is a blunt statistic for a surgeon, but perhaps giving people pause for thought about the odds of success is no bad thing.

Contra point: would you rather not know how many cases your surgeon has done that year, and the issues they have had?

Re:It's time to head back to RSS? on Saturday March 31, 2018 @01:03PM (#16724083)
Agree but use feedly as a backend and reeder as the front.
Re:It's time to head back to RSS? on Saturday March 31, 2018 @12:57PM (#16724047)
Reeder's app feels less heavy than the feedly equivalent. That said, it's what you feel familiar with! I can parse 200-300 posts in a 20-30 min commute and i think the ux helps focus my attention.
Re:It's time to head back to RSS? on Saturday March 31, 2018 @04:07AM (#16722312)
Feedly is fantastic. Coupled with Reeder on iOS it more than replaces.

Re:Show HN: Who Cares? – Professions in the NHS on Monday August 24, 2015 @05:53AM (#10108770)
Agree, harsh. However, it wouldn't hurt to drop in some roles. E.g. searching for GP doesn't yield any results. Accepting that GPs are private employees, I suspect this will be the face of the NHS to many.

Very similar to kayak.co.uk/trips

Great product. Surely a matter of time before buyout from a big car company.
Re:Xapo – Bitcoin debit card on Sunday August 03, 2014 @09:55AM (#8127902)
It's a thought - but I'm not convinced on scale. The market needs to be liquid enough to convert btc into target currencies easily. Otherwise, banks basically get btc, convert to domestic (regulated / 'insured') currency at point of receipt and then you're back in old world payments. N.b. I am straying from my area of knowledge but I am confused as to what would stop a btc based bank going bust or suffering from the same currency controls Cyprus put in place if you have put it in a wallet somewhere (we used to call this a deposit!).
Re:Xapo – Bitcoin debit card on Sunday August 03, 2014 @09:01AM (#8127798)
This is interesting, an odd mishmash. whilst the FAQ is big it is not specific - eg 'we are not a prepaid debit card' (do you have a deposit license?) ... 'We automatically withdraw money from your xapo wallet' (and that doesn't count as preloading?).

To me, it looks like they've taken a standard visa backed prepaid debit card (although not putting visa logo on it I thought was a breach of scheme rules). They've added a nice ui, and wrap around of saying you can use bit coins.

However. Bitcoins stops at the point of actually using the card, where they convert it into the issuing country's currency (assume here: Usd). You're still using visa / other scheme network to transact and they don't take bitcoins.

The other comments are bang on and prepaid cards are immensely profitable with trxn fees to load them up, and 'hidden' fees for doing fx. What's odd here is that people using bitcoin are presumably doing it because they like the idea of not having to pay for all that crap! Much comment about how the funds are insured for 100% against any loss - but no mention of FDIC...

I wonder how it compares to other 'public' sector roles that are less unionised - e.g. nursing. Do they earn 100k a year?
She didn't beat a ticket; the state had no evidence to present to the court that proved she'd done any thing wrong; a neat side step by the judge.
