There was an HN poster a few months ago who claimed that memorizing the Python standard library made him much more productive.

There is a certain subset of programmers who get away with this at work. But if you're posting this, it sounds like you're torn between the comfortable quality of life you're living now, and the boredom and knowing you could be doing more.
Some ideas:
* Can you do a rotation on a different team? (For example, if you're devops, you might learn a lot on SRE/ops.)
* Can you start side projects at work, for work?
I run an email newsletter[1] that aims to highlight the interesting content found on personal blogs. It's a single link every other day to something interesting, the kind of blog posts that you come across every once in a while that really make you think. The overwhelming feedback is that being able to read the kind of non-viscerally-targeted news and analyses that aren't easily found online is incredibly valuable.
I've been asked multiple times about starting a community with discussion, but don't currently have the bandwidth. If someone else would like to create one I will happily support it.

Each email contains the article's title, the genre, and an extended excerpt.
I'm not sure how to link to previous emails, but here is a sample of previous links: https://mix.com/thinkingaboutthings.
It started out as an every day email, but readers told me that every other day would give them time to read the articles.
Thank you for letting me know. Fixed.

This looks intriguing. Welcome to the newsletter space! I run Thinking About Things [0], a newsletter with a similar premise - that of critical thinking and seeing things in a new light.
The demand for content about critical thinking is rising exponentially. I'm happy to collaborate and show you the ropes - you can find our contact info on the site.

It's impossible to underestimate the degree to which curation is becoming the differentiator in the digital economy. Those who can be trusted to provide valuable content from the fire hose of all that's available on the internet will become the new information brokers.
This message is expressed very well here [1]. Tl;dr internships are helpful to students for a variety of reasons, like making applicants more valuable to employers, making programming less of an abstract concept, and exposing them to interesting subfields of computer science.

I get an interesting article emailed to me every day from Thinking About Things [0], so I use that to go down some rabbit hole.

I've long wanted to build a search engine of only personal blogs. I am less familiar with the field of information retrieval so I haven't gotten started yet, but it's always been a dream of mine and if anyone is interested please contact me at [redacted] [at] the world's largest email provider.
Discovering unknown parts and blogs on the internet is one of the enduring goals of a newsletter that I run [1], which provides a single link to an interesting article every day, usually by lesser-known authors and blogs across the internet.

For those who prefer text-based entertainment, I run an email newsletter called Thinking About Things [1], which sends out a link to an interesting article every day. It's aimed at curious people who don't have a lot of time to read - each email has an extended quote from the article so that you can see if it interests you. It's gotten very good reviews from readers.

Thank you for the feedback - I'll add that.
Anyone who enjoys this might enjoy an email newsletter I run, Thinking About Things [1], which sends readers a single interesting and thought-provoking link every morning. It's a similar idea - small, manageable parts of ideas for people who are too busy to pursue idea discovery full-time.

Sounds like he got a scholarship.
Teaching developers how to find the answers to their problems is a crucial skill, and one that's often approached the wrong way - either new developers get all the answers easily and don't learn, or they spend days trying to unblock themselves. I recently wrote about that challenge in an article for junior developers. [1]
