Re:Amazon Pip Horror Story on Saturday February 05, 2022 @11:12AM (#30222479)
You might be able to quantify internal culture, process and behavior, by applying some of the qualifiers from the human development index and happiness index to your company.

Just a thought.

NFTs backed by real fungible property. Own not only the picture of the zucchini, but the zucchini itself, which can be transferred or used independently as an asset.

I am joking of course, but stranger things have happened. You can own a farm, but have conveyable mineral rights, and land use rights, that render the whole of the property unusable by the owner.

Speaking of genetics, screening for the genetic profile of variable liver enzymes for known mutations and their associated drug interactions could actually save on the shotgun approach to dispensing medicines.

The problem is, you won't be able to hammer down the health of the patient to the lowest cost option, only the most effective.

Re:Inflation rises to 6.8% year over year on Friday December 10, 2021 @12:41PM (#29512902)
So there is a price point, and I think we have reached it, where you can utilize raw sucrose to culture nitrogenous bacteria, which then is added back to the soil, not only increasing nitrogen concentrations but adding catabolizable biomass back into the soil. This is compared to anhydrous ammonia at $800/ton.
Re:College Major Restrictions and Student Stratification on Thursday December 09, 2021 @10:26AM (#29498376)
I see that this applies to intra-university stratification. Does this trend also explain inter-university stratification, i.e. major universities having majority asian and white students, and lesser universities having larger proportions URM as a majority?

Also, why was B.F. Skinner allowed to have so much influence on the way we structure our educational system?

Re:Groups never admit failure on Thursday December 09, 2021 @09:50AM (#29497922)
GPT-3 looks like the best answer here. There are more than a few outliers I can think of A then B logic as written, which indicates a limited training set database of, like you said, a few podcasts and biographies.

Have the strains been engineered with a BAC or through CRISPR-type editing or something with Cre-recombinase to get over-expression of lactase?

Any out-patient nutritional studies showing GI intestinal biome data with positive growth conclusions?

When you live paycheck to paycheck, there is really no room to think about or espouse passion, value, or achievement. Language can be very hierarchical, and often creates barriers to entry between in groups and out groups.

While I understand what you are saying, unless you have some context, the above values are useless to think about and may even be detrimental, unless you have some sort of algebraic commutation of language.

However, if you can evaluate some of these terms in your own life, and find others that also value the same things, and communicate in the same terms in an interview then, yes that may work.

Ask about sleep apnea, as well.
>so healthcare shouldn't be provided by private industry, but also not by the government... so, what? non-profit orgs only?

That would be a good start.

To some extent, health insurers, the health care corporations which make the payments, are non-profit, but the other half is still for profit.

A step in the right direction would be to require all business in that area, to be non-profit, to lessen the shock of just taking away the industry altogether and federalizing it.

Why does this sound like, MIT doesn't know how to use rhetoric? Isn't that the point of their job as administration, to be the interface between the public and the institution?

I wonder what is harder to maintain, a corrupt system for a few people, or an equitable system for many?

Re:Show HN: The Virtue of Virtue Ethics on Monday September 27, 2021 @12:07PM (#28672482)
Virtue doesn't extend down the human hierarchy even if you enforce it with violence.

On the coast of Senegal, fishing is the only way to survive. For those that don't fish, there are few jobs that can be had, such as unloading the fish, or sorting them for transportation. The rest join in the economy by taking fish off the boats, or retrieving the fish that have fallen in the water, or stealing them off the boats when they come back to shore. Even if the fisherman push them off the boats, and take back their fish, they will still come back everyday, because there is no other way available to survive. Ethics aren't afforded to a society where people still have to make life or death decisions on a daily basis.

By extension, developed societies are not afforded virtue ethics, when important indices such as well-being, happiness, and the full range of emotional satisfactions, indicative of an intelligent species, are not met. These are maintained by a network of both physical resources, and societal connections.

Maslow, again, comes to mind, detailing how the physical and emotional needs of a person can work to achieve a better human. However, in some modern societies the practical pyramid of needs gets skewed, to only a few people. Will it ever be perfect? I don't think that is ever achievable, but if the goals remain myopic, you may never be able to improve, unless there are interalgic and dedicated people doing so.

Virtue doesn't extend up the human hierarchy even if you enforce it with ethics.

Re:A generation of American men give up on college on Tuesday September 07, 2021 @10:41AM (#28445455)
I hope you are not talking about people. We break bones, bump our heads, or lose too much blood and we are out of commission.

What you are talking about is a war-based society, a fault-tolerant system, with lots of redundancy, that runs through conflict and chaos. The last two decades were an experiment in that one.

Before CPAP, there was surgery, to remove part of the esophagus, and mouth guards, which moved the jaw forward, to increase airflow and reduce obstruction of the airway.
Re:Good Leaders Fire People on Monday August 09, 2021 @11:31AM (#28118159)
I strongly disagree. Good leaders know how to manage not only their own teams, but everyone else's as well, so much so that anyone that doesn't seem to be the right fit, can be effortlessly placed by a well connected professional network somewhere else, to allow them to thrive.

At best, this video shows a mediocre team leader.

Re:The damaging effects of 'boreout' at work on Sunday July 11, 2021 @11:30AM (#27801577)
Same here, but burnout. Most of the feedback I was getting were in the form of personal threats and "start looking for other jobs", from management.

I wonder if boreout and burnout are just products of the current imbalances of the current socioeconomic system, on a personal scale? What are we doing wrong economically, politically or socially that produces these extreme disparities in culture and society? Are there any remedies given the current constraints of legal, social, and familial obligations? Is finance so entrenched with physical and emotional well-being, that there can never be a happy medium?

It seems to me that some of the more advanced societies today have started to address some of the more existential questions of human existence through policy, to help assuage some of these fears. As before, policy helped to address some of the more physically threatening things like lions and tigers and bears, by building infrastructure. Advanced society policy addresses more existential questions, as in the above paragraph.

Which one do you live in, one that struggles with the basics, or the one that engages and addresses the existential questions of human existence? If you really want to get serious, what is the optimal velocity at which this occurs?

Re:Quantum Computing with Holes on Saturday June 05, 2021 @01:07PM (#27406739)
Why aren't people looking at guanine-positron hole trapping for building quantum circuits? I mean they are super easy to construct and can readily trap potassium and calcium in close enough proximity to get spin coupling with electron resonance to a gold scaffold. Attach to a GeAu alloy and you might be able to tune the singlet-triplet state to omit the noise from the DNA scaffold allowing for scalable quantum dots, e.g. a quantum computer with trillions of qubits.
I seem to remember wireless charging with magnetic induction. Why did this never become the norm?
Re:Move over CRISPR, the retrons are coming on Thursday May 06, 2021 @10:12AM (#27063487)
This will probably be a boon for single cell organism bioengineering.

However, due to the fact of having to stick a reverse transcriptase into the mix to make it a functional platform, and the need to knock-out ssDNAase activity to achieve viable transformants, may ultimately prove problematic in multicellular organisms.

Outcome: Any industrial microbes in use today, will become better, through empirically directed multi-site-mutational screening, subsequently improving yields.

Just out of curiosity, what is your sense of humor like?
At that level, abstract logic becomes more important. Is it better to think of a flower in a field as part of a larger ecosystem, or characterize your company as a machine composed of cogs?
Or create a palm reading fortune app that sells for 1.99, and sell the data to amazon to train their AI. Unless that database has been purged of PID, there would be the potential for abuse if it was sold or stolen for getting some free groceries.
