Re:Show HN: Destroy Any Website with Stickman on Monday September 28, 2026 @03:02PM (#49882835)
Oh this is lovely. I started doing something similar, but I was generating the stage based on the DOM and some CSS features, but kept getting weird boundaries (read: the character would float on unseen edges)

I later thought about using an edge-detection algorithm to capture the page as an image (triggered on page events), but never fully implemented it and shelved the project.

I would love to know how you captured the visible edges

I like it. I have too many issues with Mermaid
Re:Fourier Analysis: Drawing Llamas with Circles on Saturday September 26, 2026 @10:51AM (#49857157)
Can't you have another set of circles perpendicular to plane, which encode when the pencil draws, allowing for discontinuous regions?
Re:Back to the future: modules for Guix packages (2022) on Thursday September 17, 2026 @06:06AM (#49738582)
I love Guix, I just hate that it requires such an invasive installation for it to work.

Compare it to pixi for example which has all the same features (pixi shell, pixi run, pixi pack, etc.) and requires only a small user-level installation and a folder specific deployment

Felicia Hemans's poem He Never Smiled Again is an ode to Henry I's reaction to his son and only male heir perishing in the tragedy

  > The bark that held a prince went down,
  > The sweeping waves roll’d on;
  > And what was England’s glorious crown
  > To him that wept a son?
  > He lived-for life may long be borne
  > Ere sorrow break its chain;-
  > Why comes not death to those who mourn?
  > —He never smiled again!

Re:Ask HN: Can we please limit the AI news flood? on Friday September 11, 2026 @02:35PM (#49663153)
oh absolutely, but if they lose half their audience due to the sloppification of their front page, then they lose both legitimacy as an interesting and impartial platform to promote said AI tech
Re:Ask HN: Can we please limit the AI news flood? on Friday September 11, 2026 @09:50AM (#49658412)
Its important to use these filtered front pages though, so that eventually theres a sizable Referrer traffic chunk coming not from HN's frontpage itself that will signal to the admins that something is up

When there's a will, there's a way...

Yep, reasonable film to stream. Wouldn't pay theatre money to go see it
Very light on details, but did awaken me to the idea that you can setup HW projects like this without soldering. Bluetooth is practically ubiquitous, and ESPhome does offer this up in a palatable way

Re:How much of HN is AI? on Tuesday August 25, 2026 @11:50AM (#49436151)
The issue is the tech and the motives to wield it. Cosy decentralized message boards exist, thankfully outside the realm of the greater public.

The moment that the greater public sees these high trust networks and tries to join them, all the bad actors and their armies of bots will follow and I mourn for the recreation time of any admin who has to suddenly deal with that.

Private walled gardens seem to be the only way forward for now. If you love something, do not share it here

when the local baker jacks up his prices to leach off the richest man in town, everyone else suffers
People can be predisposed towards something, and then have a tipping point brought by periods of great stress

Jason Arday recently committed suicide due to media pressure, and even when the media was told that he was not mentally well and should please back off, they didn't.

The man was accused of plagiarism, and there was no final verdict on if he did. The institutions that hired him clearly had no issues in vetting him. And yet he committed suicide.

There are absolutely horrible people out there right now who's entire careers are shams, and don't even come close to thinking about it. People are built different, and have different triggers

> There were thousands of robots for every Solarian. Almost all of the work and manufacturing was conducted by robots. The population was kept stable through strict birth and immigration controls ... the population was twelve hundred, with just one human per estate. Solarians hated physical contact with others and only communicated with each other via holograms.

A.k.a Rich white man's paradise

They're cooked. If the hackers have the source code as well as a build... ransom or not, that's finding its way into the aether.

Probably a good thing long-term brand-wise: the modding scene will be insane and inject some much needed life into the listless series which Rockstar can then EEE later

It's a self-signed cert registered with Harica CA, but the certificate itself does not require the certificate authority to validate it according to Firefox's about:certificate
Agreed, but then shrink the price too
It's insane to see the UK still growing. Despite all of our problems, it's still a nice place to be

Gosh I haven't experienced that in a while. Working remote really does feel like a death sentence sometimes

I had the great pleasure/misfortune of being forced to work with LaminDB, and I can tell you folks; data provenance isn't going away -- it will be used to train the very AI models snapping at our heels
What's to stop Ikea from pushing an OTA and crippling your whole setup 2 years from now?

No one has both the time to avoid every deception set by large industry. We're all experts in our respective fields but can be completely side-jumped by something just adjacent to it, and we can't be experts in all.

Sometimes you just want to buy a tangerine without having to research beforehand which ones aren't absolutely plastered in antibiotics on their peel (read: the majority).
