Re:My Favourite Laptop on Tuesday November 03, 2026 @10:27AM (#50353203)
So you modified the hardware on a work provided laptop instead of just running the screen at a different resolution?
Re:My Favourite Laptop on Tuesday November 03, 2026 @12:36AM (#50348483)
You want to downgrade your laptop?

Maybe I’m a sucker , I have to ask.

Why?

Re:My Favourite Laptop on Monday November 02, 2026 @02:59PM (#50342778)
Like Land Rover owners, I’m always shocked that people look to buy a thing that has plenty of spare parts.

I’d much rather buy a thing that doesn’t need them. Two decades of laptops, never replaced a single thing or had an issue. Shot, I have not had a single app crash or system crash in 5+ years. Also two decades of driving around the world without a single breakdown.

Re:Electrification Could Cut Global Energy Use in Half on Monday November 02, 2026 @08:54AM (#50336832)
I’m in Canada, payback on my 7.3kw system will be 7 years.

I got an interest free loan for the full cost, so nothing out of pocket, just putting the money I would have spent on electricity onto the loan for 7 years, the will profit $1000 a year for 20 years.

Worlds biggest no brainer.

As an Australian, I can confirm that basically everything about Australian culture (good and bad) is just British, sometimes with a little twist.
Re:Nine killed as small jet crashes on Florida street on Monday November 02, 2026 @08:44AM (#50336714)
You just described the ethics of the mainstream media.

They have none. Money is more important.

> To what degree is this just another symptom of the US healthcare system being flawed?

100%.

Nobody living in a country with healthcare for all with no out of pocket costs would ever care about such a thing.

I spend as much time thinking about “fixing” my healthcare as I do thinking about fixing the supermarket or the roads around here.

Ie not one second because they work perfectly.

Re:Electrification Could Cut Global Energy Use in Half on Sunday November 01, 2026 @01:58AM (#50323054)
We got rid of our gas furnace and got a heat pump. We also got 7.3kw of solar on the roof. Our entire energy bill for a year for everything is $500.

In Canada I’m a deep valley where it snows a ton.

Even my 2011 Jeep manual transmission has hill start assist, it never rolls backwards .

Interestingly, it will roll forwards if you’re on a steep hill and trying to reverse up it. I guess it doesn’t know which way you want to go ( the computers don’t know what gear you’re in)

> In exchange they avoid hundreds of millions, maybe billions, in future copyright lawsuits.

Will the lawsuits not come from adobe? From big SaaS companies? From every other major piece of software any Joe will be able to duplicate with a single prompt in a few hours?

This admission is showing that Anthropic believes they might get in hot water for reverse engineering video games. Surely it applies to everything else.

Re:Digital Minimalism on Saturday October 31, 2026 @10:45AM (#50316672)
I don’t have a phone, I don’t have an account on any AI (though google search gets me)

No AI is easy, I don’t want it.

No phone is inconvenient sometimes, but I’m well aware I don’t want my life to be more convenient, I want it to be more fulfilling. I do things that are inconvenient because I want to. Bake bread, chop wood to heat our house, hunt to fill the freezer. I talk to people face to face, I live basically the same as I did as an adult from 2000 onwards.

I spend my days outside where there is no cell service anyway, and have no interest in being contacted or contacting others. The people with me are who I want to spend time with.

I mean, isn’t that true of all sales of literally everything?
That is incorrect.

Spacex have already sold Starship launches to others, and they will require some kind of “payload doors”.

Re:Tracks along the longest drive on another world on Friday October 30, 2026 @06:14PM (#50310842)
I assume everything was very conservative and safe back during initial design.

Now they have a ton a data and a long unimaginably successful mission they can take a few more risks.

Re:After 28 years walking across the globe, he's almost home on Friday October 30, 2026 @02:37AM (#50300512)
I don’t know. I had to apply for visas at embassies for like 20 of those in a row, around $150 USd each.
Yes, foreign registered vehicles can stay in the us for a year.
Re:After 28 years walking across the globe, he's almost home on Thursday October 29, 2026 @04:05PM (#50295014)
I’ve driven my personal vehicles through 65 countries on 5 continents. It’s not that hard.
Re:Patrick Stewart has died on Thursday October 29, 2026 @04:02PM (#50294964)
Damn. Doomsday may be his last appearance. I wonder if they filmed anything for secret wars.

Wow, what a loss. So many iconic characters, so much inspirational

Re:MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch on Thursday October 29, 2026 @10:23AM (#50289595)
So ignore the touch aspect. You’re getting the best screen ever put in a laptop. Lighter, better speakers and redesigned cooling.

Easily the best laptop Apple has ever made. You can choose to never touch the screen.

Re:US Wages Share of GDI at 75 Year Low on Monday October 26, 2026 @12:55AM (#50239306)
Wages for the upper tier, but not in the form of wages
Quite the opposite, that wealth would be available for society to put it to use in productive application.

Building high speed rail, hospitals and schools. Paying teachers more, universal healthcare, better roads and airports and less free pipes.

Those are all fantastic things that benefit everyone while also creating jobs and spreading the wealth around.

Even Bill Gates has said his taxes should be higher [1]

What I’m saying is that you are correct. No country can deny entry to their own citizens.

They can, and frequently do, arrest you the second they admit you.

What for? Whatever they make up.

In the US they can also keep all your devices indefinitely.

No idea what you’re talking about. The window on my microwave has never broken or complained of pain.

/s

They can arrest you the second you are admitted into the country.
Without a doubt you are right.

My comment was about a lot more than just utilities. Healthcare, education, transit, etc etc.

It’s called “the idiot box” in Australia for a reason.
My brother said that watching professional sport is watching other people live their dreams.

Don’t spend your time watching, spend your time making your own dreams come true.

> Privatization supporters seem to always use waste as a boogeyman, but never the inevitable profitmaxxing for management and shareholders

That’s because under capitalism, waste and inefficiency are touted as the ultimate evil. Making profit is the entire purpose of the whole system, so it’s inherently good, and “the right thing”.

Especially in the US, even talking about a reduction in profit is akin to blasphemy, and quickly gets one labeled a quack.
