Re:US boy names that became girl names and vice versa on Monday November 02, 2026 @02:14PM (#50342034)
It’s easy to confirm that what you’re saying is not so. Ask AI and you'll get specific citations of pink being recommended for boys in the early 20th century: “in the early 1900s, publication guides and trade journals—such as the June 1918 issue of Earnshaw's Infants' Department—recommended pink for boys and blue for girls.”
True in other lands as well, such as marzipan made to look like fruit sold throughout much of Europe.

I don’t think it’s woke that killed it. If they’d embraced the right with similar zest, the result would be the same. I think it’s ‘go divisive, go broke.’

Not sure what you mean about the Atantic. It is still an excellent publication of long form articles, IMHO.
A good read and a more reasoned version of the arguments Ed Zitron has been making.

Germany due to its history of being a conglomeration of smaller states has one of the widest variety of names in foreign languages, depending on the historical focus of those tongues on one or the other of the tribes/peoples: Deutschland (Germany), Germany (English), Allemagne (French, and similarly in Spanish), Tedesco (Italian for a German), Tyksland (Danish), with other variants in Polish and other languages.
Re:The Other Epidemic: Trying to get off benzodiazepines on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @08:07PM (#50174421)
Seconding your experience. Used on an occasional basis, benzos can be helpful without resulting in the horror stories related here. Of course, everyone is different and YMMV, but confirming that your positive experience is not unique.
Is a 50-ton boulder rare or super-rare?

What downfall? They continue to make great tools and I gladly pay for them.
Re:Norway Eyes Partial Ban of Smart Glasses on Tuesday October 06, 2026 @03:12PM (#49982707)
That’s a subtle but compelling distinction. Thanks.

In the US, you have consented. It is settled law that there is no expectation of privacy while you’re in public. This is how paparazzi, among others, can work their trade. If consent were required, every star would ban photos of themselves in public. They can’t and nor can you.

So the only difference is that the vendor here is Apple itself. Honestly, not seeing much difference.

Re:What Meta Got Right with Muse on Sunday October 04, 2026 @02:02PM (#49956258)
I use muse.ai for code analysis and so far, I find it excellent. I’m hoping JetBrains will make it accessible through Junie.
Re:Zig v0.17.0 on Friday October 02, 2026 @07:30PM (#49939850)
The second part affirms that it is centralized. There is nothing wrong with that except saying that because you can leave the community and go elsewhere, it is ipso facto decentralized.
Re:The Copilot+ PC brand is dead on Saturday September 26, 2026 @08:57AM (#49856066)
This happens all the time. Mercedes is a fairly common first name for girls in Spanish countries. Then, of course Alexa, etc.
> nobody uses oracle

Their quarterly statements say otherwise. The layoffs are not a function of declining sales, but of cutting back to conserve cash for AI build out.

Interesting—they do detailed analysis and requirements up front. Reminds me to a certain extent of the maligned waterfall model.

I donate to them every year b/c I fully agree they’re doing a thankless critical job very well.
Re:A Few Good Ideas in Programming Languages on Sunday September 13, 2026 @01:31PM (#49686375)
That was due largely to the designers of the language, Bertrand Meyer and his wife, creating the tools. The tools, the seminars, and the books were primary income streams.

The #1 vendor of phones in the world by unit sales is “dead in the water” b/c of a new $2K entrant?
This movie is getting lots of publicity without a single review saying anything about the actual contents.
There is one; you have not earned it yet.

You’ll get more traction, by stating way up top what AT is and who should care about it.
Re:Wendell Berry has died, age 92 on Wednesday September 02, 2026 @06:59PM (#49543755)
Reminds me of Andre Malraux’s remark that an unfortunate aspect of death is that it makes a life look like a journey to a known destination.
If learning algorithms in C is a traumatic experience, then you and I have very different definitions of trauma.
Re:CobaltC – The Successor to C? on Monday August 31, 2026 @12:04AM (#49505433)
It's great to have it all spec'd out. However, I think specs like this suffer the same fate as war plans: they get modified quickly as soon as implementation begins. Nonetheless, it's good to have a clear idea of where you're headed. I just wouldn't call it "Final."
Making up events in your personal history is not plagiarism.
