Re:AI Protest in Montreal on Friday September 18, 2026 @01:15PM (#49757340)
Should this be retitled to: “Old men shake fists at sky”?
“You don’t want to sell me death sticks”
OpenAI initially claimed that GPT-2 was too dangerous to release in 2019.

How many times will labs repeat the same absurd propaganda?

One requirement for a programming language to be “good” is that doing this, with sufficient specificity to get all the behavior you want, will be more verbose than the code itself.

Theory: Any system, legal or otherwise, that denies the Axioms of Reality, will eventually fail.

Axiom of Reality: “Intellectual Property” does not exist.

“Two gin-scented tears trickled down the sides of his nose. But it was all right, everything was all right, the struggle was finished. He had won the victory over himself. He loved Big Brother.”
Re:Over-Regulation Is Doubling the Cost by Peter Reinhardt on Friday November 21, 2025 @05:07AM (#46003026)
In the same way that people struggle to comprehend exponential growth, they seem to also struggle to comprehend the cost of inaction, compounded over time.

Imagine if the steam engine had not been allowed by regulators during the time of the Industrial Revolution.

If that happened and we were all still working on farms today, I bet half the people would be telling us how much safer the government was making us with all its regulations. In blissful ignorance.

Re:Over-Regulation Is Doubling the Cost by Peter Reinhardt on Friday November 21, 2025 @02:51AM (#46002191)
Indeed. Thank you for writing this and speaking up in public.

Many of the comments here that essentially reply to your article by saying “regulation is good, stop criticizing it”, are deeply depressing. That is a regulatory mind virus that must be destroyed before it kills us.

Re:The Swift compiler is slow due to how types are inferred on Wednesday June 12, 2024 @02:39PM (#40661410)
Does anyone know why, anecdotally, it seems like the slowness of type inference is more of a pain point in Swift than in Ocaml, Rescript, Purescript, Haskell, etc?
Congrats!

I’ve been watching HVM for a while and think it’s extremely cool.

My intuition is that this will eventually be a really big deal.

TIL what “fnord” is. I think that is a perfect way to describe much of this article.
Re:Parsing: The Solved Problem That Isn't (2011) on Wednesday February 21, 2024 @12:25PM (#39456699)
Have there been any notable innovations in parsing since this was written?
Re:Wasmer JavaScript SDK on Thursday December 21, 2023 @04:04PM (#38726929)
I wonder how much of a perf hit a normal multithreaded Unix application would take because of this model. Are there any data points around the multi-threading perf here?
Re:An alternative front end for Haskell? on Saturday October 07, 2023 @04:41PM (#37805355)
Curious about the reasoning for removing type aliases? I don’t have an opinion on that myself
Re:Regent – 100% Electric Coastal Travel on Tuesday May 23, 2023 @10:20PM (#36053311)
Does this require a pilots license? (Couldn’t find the answer after skimming the website)
Re:Why AI Won't Cause Unemployment on Sunday March 05, 2023 @02:59AM (#35027777)
It seems like if we want an answer to the question of “What impact will a human-like AI have on the economy?” then a relevant thing to look at would be historical times and places where slavery was prevalent. If we get to a point where the average person can spend a year’s salary to buy a human-like robot to work for them, well, that has been the case in many times and places before (it just wasn’t a robot).
Re:Prusti: Static Analyzer for Rust on Thursday October 13, 2022 @01:43PM (#33194220)
Out of curiosity, does anyone know how this compares to something like Liquid Haskell? Is one more or less powerful than the other?
