News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

Thanks for the comment! I remember watching videos about this when he was younger. We actually didn't teach him numbers or the alphabet--he would point to signs on walks and say a letter then we would add another letter or two at the same time. So he just gradually learned them.

But I also am very much in the camp of "it doesn't matter what he knows right now. Kids advance in different ways at different times and it mostly just levels out" All you can do is amazed at how fast they grow and try to help them out as much as you can.

Same with us. Our 24 month can count to 20 and knows all the letters without watching TV.

When he is at a party and a tv is on in the distance he stares like a zombie at it. It's depressing at how TV changes him and I have to transfer his focus away.

Since the author worked with a dietician I assume that an elimination diet was tried. If not, that could be something to try.

I got IBS after the stomach flu and the elimination diet helped me know what foods I could tolerate.

Might not help but if you are looking for more ideas!

Ask HN: Do I have to use the internet slowly?

I've run across more and more websites that are blocking me because I am fast at navigating the internet. I realize that this is probably an anti-bot safeguard but it prevents me from using websites in normal ways. Has anyone else run into this?

Reminds me of when I was working for a university in early 2000s. I set up WebBB for a student organization to use and after checking back a week later it was thousands of spam posts.

It's funny that I made a website exactly like this a few months ago. It was supposed to be Wordle for colors
Re:Self-Checkout Is a Failed Experiment on Wednesday October 18, 2023 @09:33AM (#37928423)
I see a lot of comments that disagree with the article. Where I live in the US, the only grocery store near me has four self-checkout machines and only one other cashier on duty. This results in lines through the entire length of the store at all hours. People with $200 worth of groceries are checking themselves out and taking at least 20 minutes to complete the process. The people who have 12 items or less have to wait for a long time to leave the store.

I’m all for self-checkout if it is limited to 12 items or less because it is significantly slower to scan and bag groceries yourself than to have two people who are trained at this.

The process is so slow that we drive an additional 15 minutes away just to avoid that grocery store.

I did not realize that a filthy mouth was a thing until my last job. Why is that a thing? It is a very toxic environment.
